After running through opponents in the Strikeforce lightweight division, Gilbert Melendez is making his claim to be the best lightweight in mixed martial arts.
In fact, Melendez wants the opportunity to prove his status among the lightweight rankings in the UFC but accepts the fact he still has his work cut out for him under the Strikeforce banner.
In an interview with MMAWeekly.com, Melendez said he wants the opportunity to prove he is the best, despite residing in Strikeforce.
“I really want to make that statement and the only way to do that is to go to the UFC and take the UFC title. Of course, I’d like that opportunity,” he said.
And an opportunity he would consider is to face the winner of Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. But for now, Melendez will look to continue his dominance when he expects to defend the Strikeforce Lightweight title against Jorge Masvidal, slated for a Strikeforce event in September.
