The whole of the mid-Atlantic and much of the Northeastern portion of the US is presently shoveling snow and recovering from the mammoth weather event that was Winter Storm Jonas. I’m certain of this, because I wrote this post on Saturday and will have spent much of my time shoveling out my driveway by the time of today’s publish. Hopefully by next Saturday (January 30th), most of the snow will have melted in time for Newark’s Prudential Center to host UFC on FOX 18. In the main event, Anthony Johnson takes on Ryan Bader in a #1 contender’s matchup at light heavyweight, while heavyweight contenders Josh Barnett and Ben Rothwell square off in the co-main.
Also on the main card, rising bantamweight talent Jimmie Rivera looks to make it 3-0 inside the Octagon, as he faces Brazil’s Iuri Alcantara. There’s a late change in opponent as well as weight class for Sage Northcutt, as lightweight Andrew Holbrook is out, and Bryan Barbarena has stepped in on short-notice. Barbarena vs. Northcutt will now be contested at welterweight. The leading preliminary card bout features welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Tarec Saffiedine, both of whom are in desperate need of a win.
