History was made tonight at UFC on FX 2. In the UFC’s first flyweight battle, Demetrious Johnson defeated Ian McCall in what many may seen as a controversial decision. There was plenty of action from both fighters, but Johnson won it in the judges’ eyes.

Here’s what we learned from this fight.

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

The first flyweight fight in UFC history was a fast-paced back-and-forth battle between two of the best fighters in the world. Besides being the first UFC flyweight fight, it will be another fight in the long list of decisions that the judges may have gotten wrong.

McCall had a dominant third round to go along with close first and second rounds that could have gone either way.

What We Learned About Demetrious Johnson

Johnson was good at bantamweight, but flyweight is the right place for him. He still may be smaller than some of his opponents, but he has the speed, boxing, defense and heart to be a champion in this division.

What We Learned About Ian McCall

McCall came into this fight ranked the No. 1 flyweight in the world by some. Despite the loss tonight, he proved why he has that ranking. McCall perhaps should have won the fight tonight. But since the judges saw it another way, he will have to wait a little bit longer until he is able to to get a UFC title shot.

What’s Next for Johnson

Johnson now finds himself back into a title fight. Instead of taking on a larger Dominick Cruz, Johnson will take on Joseph Benavidez.

What’s Next for McCall

McCall and many fans in Australia felt that he should have won the fight. But since he did not, the UFC may put him in a title eliminator match up against another top flyweight contender.
