If it is the last time for Spencer Fisher, his happy ending was not to be.
After announcing he was likely to retire following his UFC on FX 4 trilogy fight with Sam Stout, Fisher couldn’t close out his career the way he hoped for, instead suffering a unanimous decision loss by identical 30-27 scores.
Fisher didn’t perform badly. In fact, his standup looked sharper and quicker than it has at any point over the last two years, but he was undone by his inability to stop a takedown.
Stout took the fight to the ground at least once in every round, and used the positional advantage to steal rounds that he might have otherwise lost.
Fisher never badly hurt Stout, but he did cause swelling under his right eye due to his consistent targeting of the area. He certainly got the better of many exchanges, particularly in the first when he was still fresh. But Stout showed off an improved wrestling game, time after time changing things up and relocating the fight to a more advantageous position.
Notably, it was the first win for Stout since the passing of his coach and brother-in-law Shawn Tompkins, who died of a heart attack last August. He’s now 18-7-1.
Stout won the series opener with Fisher back in March 2006 via split decision, while Fisher evened the score the next year, taking a unanimous decision. Five years later, Stout can claim ultimate victory.
