UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has dealt with his fair share of criticisms since joining the promotion. After signing with the UFC back in 2013, ‘The Chosen One’ has walked a bumpy road in many respects. After starching Jay Heiron in his first UFC fight, Woodley lost a split decision to Jake Shields. This led to a somewhat widespread criticism of the future champion’s cardio. He went on to defeat Josh Koscheck and Carlos Condit before facing Rory MacDonald in a title eliminator. ‘Red King’ poured on the pressure, and the fight ended up being a bit of a disappointment.

Fans were once again displeased with Woodley’s performance. Two more wins down the line, and ‘The Chosen One’ was pegged for a title fight. Although nothing was set in stone, the 34-year old from Missouri would sit out and wait 18 months for his crack at the belt. Some critics labelled Woodley with the nickname ‘Choosy One,’ but his performance at UFC 201 blew everyone away. Extending his record to 16-3, Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler in one round to claim the welterweight championship.

More To Come

Even though Tyron Woodley had smashed Robbie Lawler to win the title, he’d face yet more criticism from the fans. After asking for fights with Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz, people started accusing Woodley of ‘ducking’ number one contender Stephen Thompson. According to the champ himself, some online ‘keyboard warriors’ had taken to racial slurs in order to get their point across.

Part and parcel of being a sports personality is facing the oft dark world of online abuse. Video sharing and social media allows everyone to see their favorite star’s most awkward and sometimes personal moments, and for UFC fighters that can include some harrowing losses. What about when it’s your employers sharing it though? Fighters are in a somewhat unique position in this respect. For example; Michael Bisping’s brutal and nearly career-ending KO loss to Dan Henderson must be incredibly hard for him to watch. All the same, the UFC has shared this moment countless times over the years. The UFC Fight Pass Twitter account shared Woodley’s Strikeforce loss to Nate Marquardt yesterday, and the champ was not impressed.

That’s certainly one method to rub Tyron Woodley up the wrong way.
