(Photo by Scott Petersen for MMAWeekly.com) MMAfighting.com broke the news on this one also Friday morning after confirming that the rematch between UFC lightweight champ Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (13-1-1) and Gray “The Bully” Maynard (10-0-1, 1NC) would go down on May 28 at UFC 130. The website was given the news by UFC President Dana White.
Both men fought to a draw less than two weeks ago at UFC 125 in Las Vegas. After a first round dominated by Maynard, who looked as if he was ready to finish Edgar, both men slugged it out for four more rounds. In the end the judges scored the fight Edgar 48-46, Maynard 48-46, and the third judge scored it 47-47.
At the post-fight interview it was announced that WEC champ Anthony Pettis would get the next title shot instead, leaving both men disappointed by the news. Shortly afterwords, White changed his mind and confirmed that Edgar and Maynard would rematch as soon as both men were healthy enough to do so.
Maynard received a 45 day suspension for facial lacerations, while Edgar was suspended till July 1st due to a nasal fracture but the suspension length could be shortened pending a physicians clearance.
UFC 130 has not been officially announced but the event is expected to take place on May 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. An Edgar vs. Maynard 3 match is likely to take the main event position of an already stacked event. Also tentatively scheduled for the event are bouts between Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Thiago Silva, Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann, and a lightweight bout between Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis could be slotted for this event but more likely UFC 131.
