From where the UFC now stands, Jose Aldo will fight no more forever.
Unless, of course, the world’s largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion is willing to meet his recent demands, which call for a featherweight title shot upon his 2016 return. If, however, the belt has been stripped from Conor McGregor, Aldo would be willing to accept a “Notorious” rematch in lieu of another crack at the crown.
That would require the approval of promotion president Dana White, who hasn’t exactly been kind to Aldo before (or after) the Brazilian was knocked out by McGregor at UFC 194. But they say time heals all wounds and White now sounds like he’s back on the “Junior” bandwagon.
From ESPN Brazil:
“I love Jose (Aldo). I’ll call him today (Wednesday) and we’ll talk to decide who’s next for him,” said White.
Asked if the conversation would be to set a new fight for the belt, White was emphatic. “Yes,” he replied.
Frankie Edgar may have something to say about that.
Then again, if McGregor is able to wallop Rafael dos Anjos in the lightweight main event of UFC 196, which takes place next month in Las Vegas, Nevada, he may be asked to keep that title active and surrender his 145-pound strap, especially if he makes good on this promise.
In that case, Aldo and Edgar can rematch for the featherweight title and await the Irishman’s return.
Sounds like there is a lot riding on this.
