With two promotions under the Zuffa label, Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting, both organizations possess their own world lightweight champions. There has always been talk of moving the two divisions together, or putting together cross promotion bouts between the lightweight fighters, it’s something that UFC President Dana White would like to see.
“We’re working on a lot of things right now we’ll be announcing in the next couple of months,” White commented.
White admits that he’s intrigued to see the potential match-ups between the best at 155 pounds in the WEC and the best at 155 pounds in the UFC. That could mean a wholesale move or even cross-promotional bouts.
“There’s some interesting fights with those guys, so we’re working on putting those together.”
There would certainly be some entertaining matchups by pitting the two lightweight divisions against one another. Who wouldn’t want to see BJ Penn step into the cage against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, or Ben Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar?
