Brazilian finisher Deiveson Figueiredo made his case for a flyweight title shot earlier tonight (Sat., Oct. 12, 2019) at UFC Fight Night 161 live on ESPN+ from inside Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, when he put a stop to former title challenger Tim Elliott via first-round submission (guillotine).
Having not fought in nearly two years, Elliott came out aggressive and looked to test Figueiredo at every turn. After a few minutes of back-and-forth action, Elliott launched in for a takedown during an exchange on the feet and the Brazilian quickly caught him in a tight guillotine choke. Elliott, who is very hard to finish, lasted as long as he could before tapping profusely.

With this performance, Figueiredo locks down his second-straight win after defeating Alexandre Pantoja in a Fight of the Night performance back in July. The 31-year-old Brazilian now holds an overall UFC record of 6-1 with four finishes, which is usually good enough to earn a title shot, especially in a shallow division like flyweight.
If current 125-pound champion Henry Cejudo is unable to defend his belt then an interim title fight between Figueiredo and veteran Joseph Benavidez makes a whole lot of sense at this point.
