Georges St-Pierre wasn’t allowed to make big money on a boxing fight against Oscar De La Hoya.
As rumors of Oscar De La Hoya making his comeback against an MMA fighter came up, the 48-year-old boxing legend repeatedly hinted that he was about to face “the best.”
He was referring to a possible bout against one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time in Georges St-Pierre.
As Bloody Elbow confirmed with sources close to the situation, De La Hoya had been negotiating with St-Pierre about a boxing match. Unfortunately, Dana White wouldn’t grant him permission.
St-Pierre, who turns 40 this May, retired back in 2019 after struggling to negotiate with the UFC for a return bout. His contract was just frozen then, which is why the promotion can still veto any exhibition or professional bout even years after retiring.
The boxing match would’ve likely done huge numbers, which is why both Triller and De La Hoya slammed the UFC President for preventing the retired MMA fighter from earning “the biggest payday.”
“This f—k nut (Dana White) kept Georges St-Pierre from making the biggest payday with me,” De La Hoya wrote on his Instagram page.
“Dana White and UFC just blocked Georges St-Pierre from fighting Oscar De La Hoya,” Triller head Ryan Kavanaugh also wrote. “It is a big payday for GSP and both he and Oscar’s dream to fight each other.
“Dana would rather hold back those who put the UFC where it is and why?” he continued. “I’ve tried to call and text Dana at least five times to make it work for both parties, not even the courtesy of a return call.”
Kavanaugh also claimed that the UFC has sent Jake Paul offers to fight for them.
“And he’s trying to get Jake Paul to fight for the UFC now? Making him offers? Just hurting his own people and chasing ours.”
St-Pierre spent time training his boxing with Freddie Roach, and was seen at the Wild Card Gym from late March to April.
Since retirement, the two-division UFC champion also continued his acting career, and was part of Disney and Marvel’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
