“The Ultimate Fighter Live” coach, and current No. 1 bantamweight contender, Urijah Faber will fight for an interim title after a scheduled UFC 148 championship bout UFC title holder Dominick Cruz was cancelled after the champ pulled out due to a torn ACL.
UFC president Dana White announced the news Tuesday night on FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” program, noting that Faber would stay on the UFC 148 card to fight for an interim title.
“So, what’s gonna happen is, Urijah Faber, he’s gonna fight still. He’s gonna fight on the same card. Now, I’m looking for the right opponent, the guy who deserves this shot at Urijah Faber.” In response to if the bout would be for a UFC interim title White responded, “Good question. The answer is yes.”
White did not name an opponent for ‘The California Kid’ but added that Cruz would stay on as coach on TUF 15 when asked if the champ would be removed from the reality series tv show.
With this announcement, UFC 148 will host two title bouts on the card with a UFC middleweight title rematch between champion Anderson Silva and No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen headlining. UFC 148 is scheduled for July 7, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
