Now that reigning UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, has disposed of Colby Covington, thanks to a fifth-round technical knockout victory at UFC 245 last weekend in Las Vegas, the “Nigerian Nightmare” can now focus on the rest of the field at 170 pounds.
Starting with Leon Edwards.
But if former lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, expects to be hanging around the welterweight division with a win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 next month in “Sin City,” then Usman wants him to know it’s a life-or-death situation.
“He must want to die,” Usman told TMZ Sports. “I mean, what? He must want to die. This is not 145, 155. You saw what Khabib did to him. Like, oh my god, it wouldn’t even be fair if I fought Conor. So, much respect to Conor for what he’s done for this sport and transcended it but nah, this ain’t what you want. Just sit down little man, sit down. Learn to walk before you can run because I would hurt that guy.”
McGregor is returning to UFC after more than a year on the bench and despite his inactivity over the last three years, “Notorious” has already been promised a lightweight title shot against the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson, who collide next April in Brooklyn, New York.
I guess “The Eagle” didn’t get the memo.
As for Usman, the Edwards fight is far from guaranteed, as promotion president, Dana White, also has his eye on top contender, Jorge Masvidal. Either way, it sounds like we still have a ways to go before sorting through all of this 170-pound clutter.
