Meryl Streep took a slight dig at MMA during her speech at the Golden Globe Awards.
Meryl Streep was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the 2017 Golden Globes. During her acceptance speech, the accomplished actress took aim at Donald Trump, and also gave a slight dig at football and mixed martial arts in the process.
“Who are we, and what is Hollywood anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places,” Streep said, before citing numerous actors who were born and raised in different countries and backgrounds.
“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

Although it was a pretty mild diss on the two sports, and a short line from a very long speech about Trump and free press, the remark still made made many MMA fans, analysts, and even fighters irate and buzzing on social media.
What a fucking joke https://t.co/4SCIAUquCv

Or you’re a pro mma fighter that can’t stand her or her liberal ways. Basically if you don’t agree with her opinions then you’re bad person https://t.co/5VI7ZyAPlN

Fuck Meryl Streep. Talks shit about MMA then says “disrespect begets disrespect”. Typical hypocritical Hollywood liberal.

Disagree about the arts but otherwise a lovely speech… https://t.co/wYNEJ4WqTF

There’s that open minded liberal spirit Meryl. Swing at two contact sports on the rise and in turn boost the talk further. #MMA #art #NFL

Leftover Chinese or frozen pizza…paralyzed by indecision. If only I had an A-list celebrity to guide me, perhaps offer general life advice…
