Video: UFC legend Randy Couture predicts slim odds for Conor McGregor – ‘He won’t touch Floyd Mayweather’
We are two weeks out from the biggest crossover boxing match ever, as current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion Conor McGregor will face undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather (49-0) on Aug. 26, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
And while many have mocked and criticized the match up, pretty much everyone has an opinion on how it will all unfold once both fighters step through the ropes. Former UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight champion Randy Couture has now chimed in on the fight, agreeing with most that “Notorious” doesn’t have much of a chance against “Money.”
“In my estimation, I think he has a 1:10 chance of beating Mayweather,” said Couture on a recent appearance on UNDISPUTED. “I think we’re dealing with arguably the best defensive boxer we’ve seen in 20 years. The top boxers on the planet haven’t been able to touch him, so what makes anybody think that Conor McGregor — who is 0-0 in professional boxing — is going to go out there and touch Mayweather? I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
Adding to the fact the Mayweather’s defense is hard to penetrate, he’s also a good counter striker, which doesn’t bode well for McGregor, who will likely come out aggressive to prove a point.
“I think Conor is going to try to be aggressive and bring the fight. He is a longer, younger fighter and I think the more that he comes at Mayweather, the more he’s going to get hit,” added Couture.
Still, Couture thinks the Irishman will make it all 12 rounds — which is a victory in and of itself — and says that Mayweather will be unable to knockout the fiery Irishman.
“That’s not Mayweather’s style. He’s not the bomber and he’s not going to come out there and throw those kind of punches. I think you are looking at a 12-round decision more than likely,” he added. “It will be interesting. It’s still a fight and anything can happen. He is a long, orthodox fighter and he’s not going to throw things the way Mayweather is used to seeing them and that gives him some chance, but its 1:10.”
As far as the whole knock down vs. push down debate, Couture says it’s all manipulation on the part of Team McGregor and Dana White, saying that if White is going to release that video, the rest of the rounds should be issued for public viewing to get the whole picture of what actually went down.
