Watch these UFC stars compete outside of mixed martial arts.
A bunch of UFC fighters competed outside of mixed martial arts recently, including a no gi grappling match between Mike Perry and Al Iaquinta at Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground 11.
The pair of UFC fighters didn’t have a finish in regulation, so it went to overtime and the welterweight in Perry beat his lightweight foe via quickest submission escape. Watch the clip below:
It went to overtime, and @ALIAQUINTA very nearly finished this third-round armbar, but @PlatinumPerry was able to wiggle free and pick up a win via escape time at #SUG11 (via @SUG_Grappling).

Sonnen also tried to play UFC matchmaker and teased a possible real fight between the two competitors from different divisions. Iaquinta said he’d be willing to do so, but only if Perry was willing to drop to 155 lbs.

Also on Submission Underground, former UFC title contender Jake Shields took on Richie Martinez, and lost in overtime against the grappler dubbed as “The Boogeyman.”

That wasn’t the only interesting grappling contest that had UFC stars competing. On Friday night, SubStars grappling had MMA fighters Curtis Blaydes and Anthony Johnson both compete at a sumo wrestling event. Yep, you read that right, and the two fighters dressed the part as well.
The pair of UFC standouts joined actual sumo wrestlers in Ryuichi Yamamoto and Takeshi Amitani in a sumo round robin, before eventually facing off against each other.
Blaydes faced off with the smaller of the two Japanese competitors, but the experienced sumo champion still came up with the victory.
Rumble faced off against the massive Yamamoto, and the 600 lber just picked up the normally physically imposing MMA star with ease on their initial clash. Watch both of their matches here:
The two MMA fighters faced off against each other after. Between Rumble checking if his man parts are leaking out of the sumo outfit, Blaydes managed to take home the win, likely becoming the most accomplished sumo wrestler in the UFC heavyweight division in the process.
