It’s highly unlikely that Conor McGregor will return to the featherweight division but, if he does, streaking contender Alex Volkanovski would love to welcome the former two-division champion back to the Octagon.

Speaking to The Body Lock’s John Hyon in a recent interview, Volkanovski said he would love to fight McGregor and believes he would be a very bad matchup for ‘The Notorious’.

“Oh mate, I would love that,” Volkanovski said. “Again, money, money, money. I know he’s game. I’ll be completely different problems that he’s never dealt with, as well. I’m a pretty bad matchup for him.

“I’m not the type that is just going to come in and he’ll catch me. I’m going to be a lot harder for him to draw me in like that, and then he’s got my wrestling to worry about. Once I get him going and my rhythm, then I’m putting my pressure, then he’s worried about everything. I believe I’m a similar style to Khabib when it comes to the ground and stuff, but I believe I’ve got a whole ‘nother, higher level of striking. But I mean, that’d be some serious money, I’d love that.”

McGregor, 30, last fought at featherweight back in 2015, when the rising superstar knocked out then pound-for-pound No. 1 Jose Aldo in just thirteen seconds to become the UFC’s first Irish champion. A couple of fights after winning the featherweight title, McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the promotion’s first ever simultaneous featherweight and lightweight champion, etching his name into the history books as one of MMA’s biggest stars.

As for Volkanovski, the Australian-based fighter will look to fight the winner of the upcoming title bout between reigning featherweight champ Max Holloway and wily veteran Frankie Edgar at UFC 240. The PPV takes place next month, July 27, at Rogers Center in Edmonton, Canada.
