Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion, Chris Weidman, may have a positive attitude, but that doesn’t mean he’s oblivious to the fact that he’s been knocked out in back-to-back losses while dropping five of his last six.
But hey, random things happen.
That’s according to the “All American,” who explained to MMA Fighting that his losing streak may have more to do with the fact that mixed martial arts (MMA) is a wild and unpredictable sport and less to do with his physical tools and natural talent.
“You fight all these really good guys, you’re not always going to get your hand raised,” Weidman said. “There’s definitely randomness who wins that night. Random things that happen. It doesn’t necessarily mean that person is the better person in the fight.”
Weidman (14-5), who turned 36 back in June, will battle former welterweight Omari Akhmedov in the UFC Vegas 6 co-main event, which airs exclusively on ESPN+ this Sat. night (Aug. 8, 2020) inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“I need to get a freaking ‘W,” Weidman said. “I need to get back on my winning ways. I think I have a lot of advantages in this fight but when you’re in there, you never know what’s going to happen. I’m taking it very serious. He’s tough but when I look at the guys I’ve fought, I don’t think he’s up there as far as the most talented. I think that’s a fair statement without knocking him.”
