UFC welterweight Darren Till, 26, lost back-to-back fights in which he was convincingly finished; but hey, he’s still young and learning and has a bright future. UFC welterweight Sage Northcutt, however, won his last three UFC fights, including this knockout, but got sent packing because he’s still young (23) and needs some work.
Welcome to the world of UFC President Dana White, who refused to give strawweight fan favorite Michelle Waterson a championship title shot because she’s ranked No. 7 at 115 pounds … right before giving it to the No. 6-ranked Weili Zhang.
Anyway, White has big plans for Till (17-2-1), who is important to the promotion — especially after the retirement of Michael Bisping — because Europe is a huge market where “The Gorilla” remains a bona fide draw.
“We have a big matchmaking meeting tomorrow and that’s one of the things we’re working on,” White told BT Sport about Till’s next fight (transcribed by BJPenn.com). “He’s a great kid and I like him a lot. He’s still young, and he’s still learning and still growing. I still think he has an incredibly bright future.”
Till is currently ranked No. 6 at 170 pounds, which is a far cry from hometown rival Leon Edwards (17-3) at No. 11. That said, the outspoken “Rocky” has captured seven straight wins and is no doubt a worthy opponent.
“We talked about that too,” White said about a potential Edwards showdown. “Those two don’t like each other. We might have to divide the country if we make that fight. I think that’s a massive fight in England.”
Expect an announcement on Till’s next fight sooner, rather than later.
