An injury to welterweight Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson (6-1) has forced the 29-year-old out of an upcoming UFC 154 bout versus Besam Yousef (6-1).
Thompson had to withdraw from the Canadian event due to a torn meniscus suffered in training, and according to MMAFighting.com who reported the injury, will undergo surgery on Monday. Fans can expect ‘Wonderboy’ to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks.
The two were scheduled to meet as part of UFC 154: St-Pierre vs. Condit which is scheduled for November 17, 2012 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The two were to have competed on the events preliminary card.
Thompson suffered his first pro-mma loss this past April after a one sided decision versus Matt Brown at UFC 145. ‘Wonderboy’ turned heads in his Octagon debut though, knockout out Dan Stittgen with a beautiful head kick KO at UFC 143 a couple months before in February. That victory also earned Thompson the “Knockout of the Night” bonus.
With three weeks to go before the pay-per-view event in Montreal, things don’t look good for Yousef in finding a new opponent. The Swedish based fighter also dropped his last fight, dropping his Octagon debut to Simeon Thoresen at UFC on Fuel TV 2 last April. That loss ended Yusef’s undefeated streak at six victories.
