There’s really no nice way to say this: Things are completely fucked up at 170 pounds.
We have Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal fighting for an imaginary title atop the UFC 244 pay-per-view (PPV) event because the promotion once again failed to get its champion and top contender booked for a welterweight showdown.
Who’s at fault?
That’s hard to say, but if history is any judge, I’d reckon both “Nigerian Nightmare” and “Chaos” share most of the blame. Like they say, when one door closes another door opens, one that is “super necessary” in the eyes of former champion, Tyron Woodley.
“Since Colby’s being a bitch per usual! Kamaru Usman what you say we run this back,” Woodley wrote on social media (via Farah Hannoun). “If any thing is ‘super necessary,’ it’s this!”
Woodley coughed up the 170-pound crown after getting swept on the judges’ scorecards at UFC 235 back in March. Usman was immediately sidelined with injury and was expected to be back within six-to-eight weeks, but has since failed to resurface.
As for Covington, he got tired of waiting around and took a fight against Robbie Lawler in the interim, a fight that belonged to Woodley until “The Chosen One” withdrew as a result of a bum hand (more on that injury here).
Hopefully we can this mess sorted out sooner, rather than later.
