Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has reacted to his loss to Vicente Luque at UFC 260.
Tyron Woodley was in rare form on Saturday night against Vicente Luque at UFC 260, but it was not enough to get him a much-needed victory inside of the Octagon. The former UFC welterweight champion started the fight off more aggressive than usual, which was an approach we’d not seen from Woodley in some time.
Woodley came forward and landed a right hand before shooting in for a takedown. His opponent defended well, but Woodley continued to pressure him and landed another right hand that stunned Luque. Woodley followed up with more punches, but was countered by a right hand from Luque that hurt him badly.
Woodley tried to stay on his feet, but Luque kept tagging him and he ultimately went for another takedown. Luque quickly went for a D’Arce choke and got it, forcing Woodley to submit in the first round.
Woodley took to social media hours after the fight to briefly assess his performance and give praise to his opponent.
“S—t was going really well until it wasn’t,” wrote Woodley. My camp pushed me in ways I haven’t been pushed in a while. I committed, and swore to myself I would bring the tiger out that earned me gold. I saw the opportunity for the KO and got too excited. Payed a big cost. I don’t regret my aggression as that’s what God created me to do. [Vicente Luque] is a tough and humble fighter. Was an honor to share the cage with you tonight.”
Woodley is now on a four-fight losing streak, but those losses have come against some of the top names in the welterweight division such as Kamaru Usman, Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington. The fight with Luque was the last one on his current contract, and it is unclear whether he will re-sign with the UFC.
