Chad Mendes

Former UFC featherweight contender Chad ‘Money’ Mendes (12-1) was in a Hanford, California courtroom on Monday over his alleged involvement in a bar brawl from this past July which had the fighter facing misdemeanor battery charges.

Mendes, who has maintained his innocence, was exonerated after the District Attorney dropped the misdemeanor battery charge. Mendes did plead no contest though, to the lesser charge of disturbing the peace.

Mendes spoke to MMAWeekly.com about the dropped charges.

“I have said from the beginning that the outrageous allegations published by the media were either false or incredibly sensationalized,” Mendes said on Monday. “Today’s outcome proves it.”

The Team Alpha Male fighter is scheduled to face Hacran Dias this December in Australia as part of the upcoming UFC on FX 6 event.

On Saturday, November 10, 2012, the sixth installment of UFC on Fuel TV will air from the Cotaiarena in Cotai, Macau. In the main event of the evening, former UFC Middleweight champion Rich “Ace” Franklin will square off against former Strikeforce champion Cung Le. Both of these guys are extremely dangerous strikers, but Franklin is a more traditional boxer while Cung Le is known for his unorthodox kicking and clinch work. Cung Le also have very underrated takedowns, which could be a factor here in making Franklin fight defensively in the striking exchanges.

In the semi-main event, heavy-handed Brazilian Thiago Silva will look to halt an unprecedented winless streak as he faces undefeated Bulgarian prospect Stanislav Nedkov. Silva is a very dangerous striker, but Nedkov is a threat to finish both standing and on the ground, so this should be an exciting and competitive bout. Rounding out the card are a Welterweight showdown pitting Thiago Silva against Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim and a lightweight bout between Ultimate Fighter winner Mac Danzig and former PRIDE kingpin Takanori Gomi.

Jon Fitch Discusses Nagging Financial Problems Leading Up To UFC 153

Welterweight Jon Fitch (24-4-1, 1NC) came into his last fight hoping for a win and a “Fight of the Night” bonus, needing the money to pay for bills as the fighter has come on hard financial times.

Fitch faced the highly touted Erick Silva at UFC 153 just a couple of weekends ago, earning a unanimous decision over the Brazilian as well as an extra $70,000 for the “FON” bonus.

The financial windfall represented a big relief for the fighter who is stuck with two mortgages in a devastated housing market.

During an interview on the SiriusXM Fight Club on Monday, Fitch talked about his financial issues describing the last two years of his life as a “major pain in the ass.”

A major pain in the ass, cause nothing was ever on the level of disaster you know, but it was borderline like. We were sitting on the edge of being in an unrecoverable position for months and months. Very strangling, very taxing position to have to go through. My wife was pregnant for part of it and we had a small child for part of it. A big headache. Nothing that completely to take the rug out from under us, but grief here and there, and not bringing in the money, and me being bad, put a lot of stress on the situation.

Fitch was asked to explain just how he was put into this situation, especially as a professional athlete making the type of money that he does.

Well a lot of it was because I was feeling in a good position before the BJ Penn fight and I bought a second home. The market crashed so bad on the condo that it became impossible to sell or I’d lose my ass and everything I invested into it. Mostly having to pay two mortgages and living in California is expensive. New house and a baby, delivering a baby is not a cheap thing even with good insurance. It’s the little things here and there. Like you said if your not fighting making money, your not making money, your not getting paid.

Fitch is now 1-1-1 in his last three bouts, suffering a 12-second knockout loss to Johny Hendricks last December at UFC 141, and fighting BJ Penn to a majority draw at UFC 127 in Australia in February 2011.

If the former contender can fight like he did in Brazil in the future, he shouldn’t have to worry too much about money but only time will tell.

If Benson Henderson were in the throes of a weight cut, a night at a restaurant would be one of those experiences filed under “Reasons why it sucks to be an MMA fighter.”

There’s a little less than two months until his title fight with Nate Diaz, however, and Henderson has the freedom to be a little more liberal than usual with his diet.

He polishes off an entree, finishes a neglected appetizer and orders dessert during an interview at Elliott’s Oyster House in Seattle.

Matt Riddle Uses Marijuana For Medical Reasons

UFC welterweight Matt ‘Deep Waters’ Riddle (7-3, 1NC) spoke out today about a positive marijuana result following a victory over Chris Clements last July at UFC 149. UFC welterweight Matt ‘Deep Waters’ Riddle (7-3, 1NC) spoke out today about a positive marijuana result following a victory over Chris Clements last July at UFC 149.

Riddle received a 90-day retroactive suspension and had the win changed to a “No Contest” by the Calgary Combative Sports Commission.

During an interview on The MMA Hour (@MMAFighting.com), Riddle explained the positive result, explaining that he has a medical reason for using marijuana, even going so far as to post his medical marijuana card for the State of Nevada on Twitter (@riddletuf7) this past weekend.

“The thing is, I’ve quit 12 days out before and didn’t have a problem,” he told host Ariel Helwani. “To be honest, this drug tester tested me right after the fight. I was super-dehydrated. My pee was brown. It was the pure essence of Matt Riddle. They got the concentrated Matt Riddle in a cup, and I popped.”

Riddle said that he is not addicted to marijuana, and suggested that he was using it for a variety of medical reasons, including anti-anxiety and physical pain.

“I do smoke but I’m not smoking to get stoned,” he said. “I’m smoking so I can finally relax, sit back and just not worry about things. People, maybe they did it in college one way, but for a guy like me, for a professional athlete that goes through what we go through, it’s medicine for me. Maybe for some little stoner sitting on the couch playing XBox, for him, it’s a drug. For me, it’s medicine.”

Unfortunately for Riddle, the Calgary commission was not so understanding and the “No Contest” will stand. ‘Deep Waters’ did note though, that the CCSC only changed the result to a “NC” until after the media got a hold of the story.
