ONE Championship flyweight titleholder, Adriano Moraes, has revealed a conversation he had with UFC contender Jorge Masvidal ahead of his fight against Demetrious Johnson.

Moraes picked up the biggest win of his career when he knocked out ‘Mighty Mouse’ inside two rounds at ONE on TNT 1 earlier this week. The Brazilian dropped Johnson with an uppercut before landed a picture-perfect knee to his grounded opponent. Moraes swarmed with some punches before the referee mercifully stepped in.

Ahead of the fight his ATT teammate, Masvidal advised him to look for the knee against Johnson, “the knee can change your life.”

“Some weeks ago, a month ago, when he saw me in fight camp preparing to fight, he said, ‘Adriano, I see how you train and let me tell you something, the knee can change your life. Like the knee I did on Ben Askren, you can do on Demetrious Johnson because you have good knee attacks,’” Moraes told South China Morning Post

Moraes clearly listened to his teammate and became the first man to stop Johnson, who is widley regarded as the best flyweight fighter of all-time.

The ONE Championship star is grateful to have Masvidal as a friend and predicts we’ll see ‘Gambred’ lift UFC gold in the near future.

“Man, he’s always inside the gym working hard, he’s such an amazing guy. He’s a good teammate. He likes to help his friends,” Moraes said. “He’s a veteran fighter. He knows what you need to do to get this win and bring that belt home. So I think this fight is going to be tough, but he’s going to do good. I think he’s going to win via TKO in the second or third round.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Do you think getting advice from Jorge Masvidal helped Adriano Moraes become the first man to stop Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson?

Former UFC flyweight king Demetrious Johnson has released a statement following his upset loss to Adriano Moraes at ONE on TNT 1 last night.

‘Mighty Mouse’ suffered his first ever knockout loss when he challenged for ONE Championship gold at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

In the second round, Johnson was dropped by an uppercut. Moraes swarmed and landed a knee to his grounded opponent. The Brazilian landed a few more ground strikes before the referee mercifully stepped in. Moraes becomes the first man to stop Johnson who had previously only lost via decision.

‘DJ’ quickly recovered from his loss to post out on Twitter.

“all good everyone back in the hotel,” Johnson wrote. “watch the fight. shitty day in the office. congratz to @adrianomkmoraes we will be back.”

Johnson later posted to Instagram with his deeper thoughts on the defeat.

“Alright guy, we are back in the hotel,” Johnson began. First off, I wanna everybody for your guys support and my teammates Tony and James. Shitty day in the office. I’ve watched the fight three times. I thought I was going good. Just trying to cross that distance. We knew that was going to be the biggest obstacle course of facing Adriano Moraes for how big he is. But, you know, if you’re in this game for long enough its bound to happen one day. I’m healthy. I feel good. Thank you to the fans and all the supporters out there. Thank you, ONE Championship, for the opportunity. Thank you to Adriano Moraes for the fight. We will be back. It’s part of the game you know right boys. I’m gonna watch the fight again to see where I fucked up.”

Adriano Moraes shocked the world by not only defeating Demetrious Johnson, but knocking him out as well.

After what was a relatively even contest for most of their flyweight title fight at ONE On TNT 1 Wednesday night, Moraes caught and dropped Johnson in the second round and followed it up with a knee that led to Johnson going out cold.

As a result, Moraes defended his flyweight crown and also inflicted Johnson’s first defeat by finish.

Demetrious Johnson views Petr Yan as his toughest test at 135 pounds.

Although Johnson is competing as a flyweight at ONE Championship, he is actually competing at 135 pounds as opposed to 125 pounds due to the promotion moving up the weight classes.

That means Johnson hasn’t had to deal with a major weight cut throughout his time at ONE. On the flipside, it means the combat sports world is missing out on witnessing him compete against the very best bantamweights in the world.

A move up to bantamweight was talked about a couple of years ago when TJ Dillashaw was the 135-pound champion. However, it never ended up coming to fruition.

But as far as his toughest test goes if he were to include everyone competing at 135 pounds? Johnson goes with former UFC bantamweight champion Yan.

“Probably Petr Yan.” Johnson told MMA Island (via Middle Easy). “His hands are f*cking good.”

“He’s very –- not taking anything away from Adriano Moraes, he’s still dangerous — but Petr Yan has a very unique style of fighting. He comes forward, he throws great combinations very fast. He seems like he has a good takedown defense and he has power. So that’s always dangerous.”

That’s certainly not a bad shout at all given that most would agree that Yan is still the best 135-pounder in the world despite the nature of his title defeat to Aljamain Sterling last month.

A Johnson vs. Yan would have also been a great fight to witness. For now, Johnson needs to focus on Moraes who he challenges for the ONE flyweight title on Wednesday at ONE on TNT 1.

Demetrious Johnson will finally have his chance to claim the ONE Championship flyweight title.

A match between Johnson and reigning ONE flyweight champion Adriano Moraes has been set for February 24, as was announced during the broadcast of ONE: Big Bang.

Johnson earned his shot at the belt after running through the 2019 ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix. The tournament saw Johnson pick up a submission victory over Yuya Wakamatsu, followed by a decision victory over Tatsumitsu Wada, before beating longtime ONE Championship staple Danny Kingad in the finals.

Prior to joining ONE, Johnson had a long reign as the inaugural UFC flyweight championship. He defended that belt 11 times during a run that, to many – including UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya – cemented his place as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. Following a controversial split-decision loss to Henry Cejudo, Johnson was part of a highly publicized “trade” that saw him go to ONE Championship and Ben Askren come back to the UFC in return.

Now, he faces Moraes, who at 18-3, has been on quite the run himself. he is a three-time ONE champion, who has avenged both of his title defeats. In fact, all three of his losses have come by split decision. He comes into the fight against Johnson after reclaiming his title from Geje Eustaquio. When he does step back in the cage, it will be after an over two-year-long layoff.

Johnson and Moraes were originally scheduled to meet earlier this year in Jakarta, Indonesia, before the coronavirus pandemic halted those plans. Now that ONE is back to running regular shows, hopefully this fight will stay intact and we can finally see who the top flyweight is.
