Donald Cerrone will still be competing in the UFC Vegas 26 headliner on May 8.

Cerrone was initially slated to fight Diego Sanchez in a welterweight main event. However, he was left opponentless after Sanchez found himself released following recent events involving Joshua Fabia.

It was then reported that a women’s strawweight bout between Michelle Waterson and Marina Rodriguez would headline the card. Fortunately, that won’t be the case as Cerrone has a new opponent in Morono who will step in on short notice.

That’s as per MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn following an initial report from C. Contreras Legaspi.

“Donald Cerrone will fight Alex Morono at #UFCVegas26 on Saturday, sources tell @MMAjunkie. First reported by @CCLegaspi.”

Morono is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Anthony Pettis. Before that, he had won four of his last five outings.

Cerrone, meanwhile, is also coming off a draw against Niko Price and is winless in his last five overall with four defeats during that run. He will undoubtedly be eager to return to the win column for the first time since the summer of 2019.

Anthony Pettis wants to run things back with Tony Ferguson.

Pettis made it two wins in a row following an impressive unanimous decision victory over Alex Morono in their welterweight bout at UFC Vegas 17 on Saturday night.

As a result, the former lightweight champion is now on a winning streak for the first time since 2014. However, he stated in his post-fight interview that he plans on going back down to his old division.

As for who he wants? He believes a rematch with “El Cucuy” makes sense.

“I think Tony makes sense, man,” Pettis said at the post-fight press conference. “I think Tony Ferguson coming off his two losses — and he’s fighting tough dudes — that’s what I hate about this sport. Guys are like, ‘oh, Tony’s done.’ Dude, he’s a dangerous dude.

“But I think that would be a good fight for me to jump back in the lightweight mix and he’s still right up there.”

Ferguson, of course, defeated Pettis via second-round TKO when they met in a lightweight contest in the co-main event of UFC 229 back in October 2018.

Following UFC 256 last weekend, however, Ferguson is now on a two-fight losing streak. And Pettis believes with some adjustments in addition to a proper camp, he can come out on top against the former interim champion.

“Man, he got me early with those elbows,” Pettis added. “I think I make some adjustments in there and actually have a full training camp. Not taking anything away from him but I took that fight on short notice, the weight cut was horrible and I just wasn’t mentally there in that process. I was just doing these 155 fights because I kind of had to, not because I want to.

“That’s the difference right now. I’m making the decision outside the Octagon to make these fights go easier.”

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis is a late addition to the final card of the year. ‘Showtime’ will square off against Alex Morono in a welterweight bout on December 19 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The news comes hot on the heels of main event fighter Leon Edwards falling off the card after contracting COVID-19. His scheduled fight with Khamzat Chimaev will not be pushed back to a later date. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson has had his fight with welterweight contender Geoff Neal bumped up to the headline spot.

Pettis was last seen in action at UFC 249 May when he picked up a unanimous decision win over Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone to rebound from a submission loss to Diego Ferreira at UFC 246.

Morono is something of a surprise opponent for Pettis. The 30-year-old fighter has gone 4-1 in his last five fights, only losing to Khaos Williams. Morono is coming off a win on November 14 but is currently unranked at welterweight and doesn’t hold any name value ahead of UFC Vegas 17.

In an interview with ESPN, Pettis explained why he had accepted a fight with Morono, he said.

“I was actually trying to get a fight for a while now. My mindset has been so sharp. I’ve gone back to being a student of the game and I feel myself moving over this plateau. I feel like I was plateaued for a while and it was just never-ending, but last month I went to Colombia and got a stem-cell injection and I’ve been working with a sports psychiatrist. I have these tools in my mental game and I’m eager to put them to use. I’m making real progress as a martial artist and it’s felt so good to reinvent myself.”

“I’m not obsessing about getting back to a belt, or getting that next spot,” Pettis added. “This is my first chance to get back-to-back wins in a while. Let’s start back over, take this one step at a time. I feel amazing at 170 pounds. This opportunity opened up and I couldn’t say no to it.”

Do you think Anthony Pettis can make it back-to-back wins against Alex Morono at UFC Vegas 17?
