Glover Teixeira believes it won’t be long until we see Alex Pereira fight Israel Adesanya.

Pereira recently enjoyed a successful UFC debut earlier this month when he knocked out Andreas Michailidis with a flying knee on the UFC 268 featured prelim earlier this month.

Naturally, many were already eyeing up a future middleweight contest between him and current champion Israel Adesanya. That’s because the pair are 1-1 against each other in kickboxing with Pereira notably being the only fighter to knock out Adesanya.

And training partner and UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira believes a trilogy in the form of an MMA contest could take place in a year’s time.

“I told [Pereira], ‘One year,’” Teixeira said on The MMA Hour. “I told him when he signed with the UFC, ‘Hey man, they’ll be talking about you in about one year, three fights.’ Especially the way he fought. It couldn’t go better.

“I couldn’t be more happy as a coach as a training partner that’s been telling people that this guy is no joke. He’s got a lot to learn, but he’s learning things quick. He’ll get things quick. I’m talking about you get a regular guy and whatever, that guy’s gonna learn in six months – [Pereira will] learn in a week. You show him a move and he just does it.”

Glover Teixeira: Three More Fights For Adesanya vs. Pereira

Although it wasn’t Pereira’s MMA debut, it’s still very early in his MMA career as it was just his fourth fight in the sport.

However, Teixeira sees similarities between Pereira and himself in how they’re able to quickly pick up things and utilize it straight away.

That’s just another reason why he is confident Pereira is just three fights away from facing Adesanya.

“Alex is kind of like [me in training] and couldn’t have done better [at UFC 268],” Teixeira said. “He got taken down, he defended takedowns, he got up and he stayed there. You see the other guy come out of the clinch, the guy’s face was all messed up, he was dead tired and he come out with the flying knee. So calm, so relaxed.

“I say three more fights the most, and he wants to fight quick. He wants February already, he wants to fight quick, so he’s going to fight back to back probably. No injuries, no nothing. By this time next year, they’ll be talking about him and Adesanya.”

Israel Adesanya was impressed by the debut performance of Alex Pereira at UFC 268.

There may not have been a middleweight prospect as hyped up as Alex Pereira since the arrival of current champion Israel Adesanya. Adesanya has more than lived up to the hype as the #3-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world and the undisputed middleweight king. Only time will tell if Pereira will also experience sustained success in the promotion like Adesanya has.

For now, he simply holds the attention of fans and the entire middleweight division after his Performance of the Night-winning debut at UFC 268. That includes current champion and his former kickboxing foe, Israel Adesanya.

“It’s pretty much like me and (Derek) Brunson – he’s trying to find a way (to take him down) cause he’s scared of the striking,” Adesanya said on his YouTube channel about Pereira’s bout against Andreas Michailidis. “Cause you know he’s going to shoot, well-timed knee just straight up. Bang. There it is. I thought he was going to do it when he shot in, but I didn’t think he was going to fly at him.”

Of course, Pereira also holds a KO victory over Adesanya himself in the world of kickboxing. The champion has not forgotten, not that the public has allowed him to. However, as a verified Style Bender, Adesanya now has more tools at his disposal, not to mention more years of experience under his belt. So if Pereira does make it to him eventually, Adesanya will be waiting—and anticipating a much different result.

“We talked about this like two days ago,” Adesanya said. “We need something new. Especially after you lap the division again. … Good job Pereira, that was nice. One thing I notice is everyone always holds on to that win he has over me like it’s the be all end all. I hope he does well. I hope he does well through the ranks.

“In the next four fights, I hope to see him. They’ll show you the knockout, but they won’t show you what happened before the finish. I hurt him, but I only throw (hands) because I was infiltrated by other people’s thoughts. But that was when I was younger. Not anymore. It’s different now. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

Adesanya’s next title defense will be a rematch against Robert Whittaker. The bout is expected to take place in February, but that date remains unofficial as of this writing.

UFC middleweight champion is excited about some new blood in his division, especially after his old foe Alex Pereira’s debut at UFC 268.

Adesanya has been taking some time off since defeating Marvin Vettori at UFC 263 and is slated to face Robert Whittaker for his next title defense tentatively set for UFC 271. The fight is a rematch nearly three years in the making after Adesanya took the belt from Whittaker at UFC 243.

Pereira was making his UFC debut after a long career in kickboxing which featured multiple world titles in Glory. Pereira is the only man to ever knock out Adesanya in any sport, with two wins over him while both were in Glory.

Pereira’s devastating flying knee knockout over Andreas Michailidis was one of the many highlights of the card, but Adesanya wasn’t surprised by Pereira’s incredible start to his UFC career.

Israel Adesanya And New UFC Middleweight Alex Pereira Have Quite The History

Adesanya is widely regarded as one of the most creative strikers in the UFC, and the addition of Pereira makes the middleweight division that much more exciting. Before signing with the UFC, Pereira fought in one event with Legacy and earned a first-round knockout over Thomas Powell at LFA 95.

It didn’t take long for Adesanya to find a home in the UFC. Since signing with the promotion in 2018, Adesanya has lost just once over his illustrious career, in a light heavyweight title bout against Jan Blachowicz at UFC 259.

With Pereira holding two wins over the middleweight champion most of the pre-fight coverage will focus on Israel Adesanya.

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Pereira claimed that he’s “not worried” about Adesanya but says the middleweight champion should be.

“I’m not worried, man. He’s the one that should be worried, right?” Pereira said. “He knows about my potential and knows I’ll get [to the top]. When I go somewhere, I do it to become the best, just like it was in kickboxing. I’ll do everything I can to get there, and maybe he won’t even be there when I do — [if that’s the case] what do I want with Adesanya? Nothing. Is he the champion? Cool, he’s the one I want. He’s no longer the champion? I want the one that is.”

Alex Pereira Is A Highly Decorated Kickboxer

Pereira holds a combined 24 knockouts in both sports with a 3-1 record in MMA and 33-7 in kickboxing. With no clear challengers for Adesanya he believes that Stylerbender will continue to dominate the middleweight division and he will be rushed to a title shot. With two wins over the champion the first being a decision and the second being a stunning knockout, Pereira doesn’t believe that Adesanya has gotten better since joining the UFC it’s only the opponent’s behavior that has changed.

Pereira isn’t surprised that Stylebender hasn’t spoken about him joining the UFC even though he is usually so active on social media.

“He won’t talk, right? He knows my potential,” Pereira said. “He always [post videos] with his picks and stuff like that but will he talk about me? No way, he won’t. I could be wrong, but he won’t talk because he knows my potential. If he’s going to talk about me, he must say something positive because I beat the guy twice, so how is he going to talk crap about me? And if I go out Saturday and show something else, how does that make him look? It’s a bit confusing for him.”

Following his teammate Glover Teixeira‘s success at UFC 267 winning the light-heavyweight belt at the age of 42. Pereira believes he still has plenty of time to learn with him only being 34.

“Look at Glover,” Pereira said, pointing to his teammate Glover Teixeira who just won the UFC light heavyweight title at age 42. “He has way more experience and is well-rounded and I still have much to learn, of course, but he’s champion at 42 and is beating up young guys. I’m 34, but I’ve still got plenty of wood to burn.”

Alex Pereira, the decorated kickboxer, is focused on winning a UFC title not fighting Israel Adesanya again.

Pereira is set to make his UFC debut in the prelim headliner against Andreas Michailidis at UFC 268. It’s an intriguing matchup and due to the fact Pereira holds two wins over Adesanya in kickboxing, including a KO win, many think he will get fast-tracked to the belt. Yet, for the Brazilian, he says he isn’t here for Adesanya, instead, he wants the belt.

“I didn’t come here after Adesanya, I came here to be a champion,” Pereira said at UFC 268 media day. “Who knows, maybe by the time I get there he’s no longer the champion anymore. So I’m just taking it step by step. I just got to the organization and I’m just aiming to be a champion here. If I get there and it’s him, fine. If it’s not him, I’ll work with what I have.”

Entering his UFC debut, Alex Pereira knows many view him as the guy that knocked out Israel Adesanya. However, for him, he says that doesn’t matter, as he’s just here to fight.

“It makes no difference for me,” Pereira explained. “I did beat the guy, it’s part of my story. Maybe if I had lost to him it would annoy me a little bit.”

Pereira is just 3-1 in MMA but is on a three-fight losing skid as he lost his pro debut back in 2015. He then had two fights in 2016 and made his return in 2020 in LFA where he scored a highlight-reel KO win over Thomas Powell. He’s a former two-division GLORY kickboxing champion and also knocked out current UFC light heavyweight, Dustin Jacoby in kickboxing as well.
