In the main event of UFC 232 last weekend (Sat. December 29, 2018), Jon Jones reclaimed the UFC’s light heavyweight crown.

He won the vacant title by stopping Alexander Gustafsson in the third round. Now that “Bones” is back on top of the 205-pound mountain, he is once again tasked with defending the strap. Following his victory over “The Mauler,” Jones called out longtime rival Daniel Cormier for a trilogy bout.

However, on the UFC on FOX post-fight show, top contender Anthony Smith called out Jones for a July title fight. Smith was serving as an analyst for the FOX network and was lobbying for an International Fight Week headliner spot. But Smith caught some push-back from fellow analyst Michael Bisping, who told Smith to call for an immediate title opportunity if he was going to call out Jones.

Soon after, Jones took to Twitter to poke fun at Smith for calling him out for a fight date six months away:

“This man is trying to wait until July, I got some catching up to do.”

“I just thought that sounded fun. I think we can set the games aside, Jon. You and I both know I need a date and location. You name it, I’ll be there.”

The Nebraskan has earned his way into the light heavyweight title picture with three straight wins. His latest victories over Rashad Evans, Mauricio Rua, and Volkan Oezdemir have been extremely impressive.

Sitting as the No. 3-ranked light heavyweight in the UFC, it’s hard to argue anyone else that might deserve a shot at the title. But Smith shouldn’t wait around for Jones, who could easily rematch his longtime rival Daniel Cormier at light heavyweight or heavyweight.

Conor McGregor has sent Jon Jones a congratulatory gift for his UFC 232 victory.

Jones defeated Alexander Gustafsson this past weekend (Sat. December 29, 2018) in the main event of UFC 232 on pay-per-view (PPV). Now, Jones is once again the UFC light heavyweight champion of the world. Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole recently reported that, after speaking to Jones, “Bones” told him McGregor sent him and his team a bunch of Proper 12 Whiskey:

“Ran into @jonnybones in the hotel lobby and he said @TheNotoriousMMA sent him and his team a bunch of Proper 12 whiskey!”

McGregor received a bit of criticism for the move. Jones has notably had issues with alcohol and drugs in the past, leading to detrimental affects on his MMA career. One fan responded to McGregor and said the Irishman is a bad influence. “The Notorious” responded by saying “I prefer the term “influential””. However, McGregor soon deleted the Tweet:

McGregor is currently awaiting diciplinary action from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). He and his team were involved in a post-fight brawl after his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October.

While he’d like an immediate rematch against ‘The Eagle,’ McGregor is prepared to face another top contender before fighting for the title again.

In the feature bout of UFC 232 last weekend (Sat. December 29, 2018), Jon Jones reclaimed UFC gold.

“Bones” defeated Alexander Gustafsson in dominant fashion to reclaim the UFC light heavyweight title. Jones was able to take Gustafsson down in the third round with ground-and-pound for the TKO win. Now, Jones once again sits atop the UFC 205-pound mountain, and the possibilities are endless for 2019.

But the clear possibility is a trilogy match with longtime rival and current UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. Cormier spoke on “The MMA Hour” earlier today and admitted that Jones running through an opponent the caliber of Gustafsson was “impressive”:

“Well, I mean, anytime you can go through a guy like Alexander Gustafsson, in the fashion that he did, is very impressive,” Cormier said. “I have never shied away from the fact that the guy is a phenomenal mixed martial artist. And I think he fought well. Yeah, I thought he fought well. Fought exactly as he intended to and was able to completely to shut down Alex. Yeah, he did a good job.”

Not The ‘Fastest?’

However, Cormier did point out one thing he noticed in Jones’ performance. He thought “Bones” looked a bit slow inside the Octagon against his Swedish counterpart. Cormier never thought Jones was never an explosive guy to begin with but noticed he “wasn’t the fastest” on Saturday night:

“I just think that – he was never a guy that wowed you with his speed,” Cormier said. “Some guys just have, like, blazing hand speed. Jones is always a bit of a tactician, a guy that breaks you down over the course of the fight. I didn’t anticipate him being Anthony Johnson, or freaking Yoel Romero or any of those guys that are super crazy explosive and fast.

“But I saw, just, in terms of the movement, you know, I felt it was more measured. And maybe that was the game-plan. He made it seem as though he did exactly what he wanted. So maybe the measured pace was what they intended to do when they got into the Octagon. I think he’s always been the kind of guy that isn’t the fastest, and on Saturday, he didn’t look really fast.”
