Alexander Gustafsson thinks his teammate and countryman, Khamzat Chimaev, has a good chance of dethroning the UFC welterweight champion in spectacular fashion.

Chimaev burst onto the scene in the summer of 2020 and has quickly become one of the most exciting prospects in the UFC. ‘The Wolf’ has racked up four straight wins without taking any damage at all. Chimaev seems set for a big 2022 and is being lined up for a fight with former title challenger, Gilbert Burns, in April.

Alexander Gustafsson Doesn’t Think Kamaru Usman Could Take Khamzat Chiamev’s Power

A win in that fight would almost certainly mean Chimaev is next in line for a shot a Kamaru Usman, who has been a dominant 170lb champion for some time now.

Gustafsson, a three-time light-heavyweight title challenger, is a fan of Usman and respects him very much but just doesn’t think he’ll be able to hang with Chimaev.

“I think he’d [Khamzat Chimaev] put Kamaru Usman to sleep honestly,” Gustafsson told ESPN. “I think if he just touches his chin, it’s a big chance that Kamaru, Kamaru Usman goes to sleep. I like Kamaru Usman, he’s a great champ and he’s just been breaking records and like you know, it’s a pleasure to see him fight because he’s a very good technical, you know I love his jab and his wrestling and you can see that he’s on top, Kamaru Usman. But I just can’t see him take Khamzat’s punches.”  (Transcribed by Sportskeeda)

Gustafsson announced his retirement from MMA in the immediate aftermath of his loss to Anthony Smith in 2019. One year later, he was back in the Octagon this time at heavyweight against Fabricio Werdum, who quickly submitted him. The Swedish fight legend hasn’t competed since but confirmed in the below interview that he is looking to fight in 2022.

Do you agree with Alexander Gustafsson? Is Khamzat Chimaev the man to dethrone Kamaru Usman?

Jon Jones is back. “Bones” made dominant work of Alexander Gustafsson this past weekend (Sat. December 29, 2018) at UFC 232. The two main evented the pay-per-view (PPV) with their rematch from their legendary 2013 title fight. While their first fight went all five rounds, Jones finished Gustafsson in the third round via TKO in their rematch. Now, he’s once again the 205-pound champion of the world.

It looks like former “Champ Champ” Conor McGregor has offered Jones a congratulatory gift. Per Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole, “The Notorious” has sent Jones and his team a few bottles of Proper 12 Whiskey to celebrate the occasion:

“Ran into @jonnybones in the hotel lobby and he said @TheNotoriousMMA sent him and his team a bunch of Proper 12 whiskey!”

This certainly might not be the best gift to offer Jones at the moment. Jones has had some issues with drugs and alcohol in the past, which have greatly affected his career inside the cage. McGregor received a lot of criticism for this on Twitter. He even responded to one fan, who called the Irishman a ban influence.

McGregor responded by saying, “I prefer the term “influential”. But McGregor soon made the decision to delete the Tweet:

What do you think about McGregor sending Jones bottles of Proper 12 after his UFC 232 win?

Alexander Gustafsson has been forced to withdraw from his light-heavyweight return bout scheduled for September 4 according to MMA Junkie.

The three-time 205lb title challenger was due to make his eagerly anticipated return to the division against the always-exciting, Paul Craig next month.

Unfortunately, an undisclosed injury has prompted Gustafsson to pull out of the fight. It remains unclear if Craig will remain on the card against an alternative opponent or if his fight with ‘The Mauler’ will be rescheduled.

Gustafsson appeared to begin a run at title contention in the UFC’s heavyweight division before he was submitted by former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum in his divisional debut. Before that, he had lost back-to-back fights against then-champion Jon Jones and top contender Anthony Smith before making the move up in weight.

Craig earned a TKO win over Jamahal Hill at UFC 263 and also dislocated Hill’s arm in the process. He has won four straight bouts with his lone blemish being a split-draw against Shogun Rua at UFC Fight Night 144. Craig would then dominate Rua in the rematch last November at UFC 255. The Scotsman is currently ranked at #12 in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division.

Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson will make his long-awaited return to the octagon this Fall, when it takes on rising contender Paul Craig at UFC London on September 4.

The news first broke by Front Kick, and later in the day, it was reported by BJPenn.com that the card will take place in London. A bantamweight matchup between prospects Nathaniel Wood and Jonathan Martinez has also been added to the event.

At 34-years-old, Gustafsson is still in a somewhat prime spot in his career when it comes to his physical performance in the octagon. It’s unusual that a fighter with the experience of Gustafsson would cut weight once again, but he seems primed and ready to accept the challenge.

His opponent will be Craig, who earned a TKO win over Jamahal Hill at UFC 263 and also dislocated Hill’s arm in the process. He has won four straight bouts with his lone blemish being a split-draw against Shogun Rua at UFC Fight Night 144. Craig would then dominate Rua in the rematch last November at UFC 255.

Craig is currently the 12th-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender after the win over Hill, and Gustafsson has a real opportunity to make a splash in his return to his old stomping grounds at 205 pounds.

The event will be the promotion’s first appearance in London since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The UFC originally planned for a Tyron Woodley vs. Leon Edwards fight night in London in March 2020 before the global lockdowns because of the pandemic began.
