Alexander Volkanvoski revealed recently how he openly refused the opportunity to land an immediate title rematch with lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, off the back of his UFC 284 title challenge loss in February, however, the featherweight titleholder plans to rematch the Russian before the close of 2023. 

Volkanovski, the current featherweight champion, is slated to headline UFC 290 during International Fight Week in July, taking on interim division gold holder, Yair Rodríguez in the pair’s title unification bout.

However, the New South Wales favorite suffered his first promotional loss earlier this year on home soil, dropping a close, back-and-forth unanimous decision loss to lightweight champion, Makhachev in the pair’s lightweight title fight. 

Alexander Volkanovski confirmed he rejected an title rematch with Islam Makhachev

Revealing how he had been approached with the offer of an immediate rematch with Makhachev at an unspecified date, Alexander Volkanovski confirmed he rejected the clash in a bid to remain active, however, insists he will fight the former again before the end of this annum.

“I wanted to be active, I told you that,” Alexander Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel. “I was asked after the fight [with Islam Makhachev], do I want to wait around for the rematch, do i want to fight at featherweight, what do I wanna do? I don’t want to wait around. They [the UFC] said, ‘Do you want to wait around and the only thing is if you wait for that fight, that might not be until the end of the year.’ We don’t know when that fight is happening but it’s not looking like it’s gonna be anytime soon.”

“I ain’t waiting,” Alexander Volkanovski explained. “I’d rather fight featherweight then do the rematch sometime at the end of the year, whenever it is. Whenever that fight can happen, that fight’s always gonna be there. I want to stay active and I told you I wanted to stay active and I wasn’t lying. Israel Adesanya shared a series of pictures of himself alongside his teammate and fellow UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski.

‘The Last Stylebender’ is still riding high following his remarkable second-round knockout of longtime rival Alex Pereira at UFC 287 last month. Becoming just the fourth fighter to reclaim his title in an immediate rematch, Israel Adesanya is already looking to climb back into the Octagon this summer. Before then, the two-time middleweight champion is spending some time with his City Kickboxing brother and reigning 145-pound king, Alexander Volkanovski.

“Being friends with the greatest fighter on the planet has its perks, you learn how to be great yourself,” Adesanya shared on Twitter. “What a time to be alive…you are witnessing two of the best ever! Enjoy the ride while it’s happening”

What’s Next for Israel Adesanya and Alexander Volkanovski?

A few short weeks removed from his history-making win at UFC 287, Israel Adesanya is chomping at the bit to get back inside the Octagon according to UFC President Dana White. While speculation has run rampant as to who the ‘Stylebender’ would face, no official announcement has been made. One popular theory is that the New Zealander could once again move up to light heavyweight for a superfight with the reigning 205-pound champion Jamahal Hill.

‘The Last Stylebender’ has also taken aim at streaking middleweight contender Dricus Du Plessis after the South African standout called into question Adesanya’s African heritage. Stillknocks’ is currently scheduled for a middleweight title eliminator opposite former champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 290 on July 8.

As for Alexander Volkanovski, the featherweight titleholder is slated for a unification bout with current interim 145-pound champion Yair Rodriguez. ‘El Pantera’ won the interim crown at UFC 284 in February, the same night Volkanovski challenged Islam Makhachev for the lightweight championship in an early Fight of the Year contender.

Aljamain Sterling plots featherweight move following UFC 288 return maybe I defend the belt one time

Ahead of his incoming UFC 288 championship outing against former titleholder, Henry Cejudo this weekend, reigning bantamweight kingpin, Aljamain Sterling has his sights set on an eventual championship outing at the featherweight limit, in pursuit of a second Octagon crown.

Slated to headline UFC 288 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey this weekend in a championship outing against former duel-weight champion, Cejudo, Sterling will attempt to become the first bantamweight titleholder to successfully defend the crown on three separate occasions.

Last time out, Uniondale native, Sterling co-headlined UFC 280 back in October of last year in Abu Dhabi, UAE, stopping former champion, T.J. Dillashaw with a second round slew of ground strikes.

And ahead of UFC 288 this weekend against Cejudo, Sterling has outlined his intentions to likely challenge a combination of champions, Alexander Volkanovski, or Yair Rodriguez at the featherweight limit in the future.

“I smash Henry [Cejudo],” Aljamain Sterling told Megan Olivi. “I smash [Sean] O’Malley. I go up to 145 [pounds], I fight [Alexander] Volkanovski or [Yair] Rodriguez and maybe I defend the belt one time and I’m done.” 

As for both Volkanovski and Rodriguez, the featherweight titleholders are slated to headline UFC 290 during International Fight Week in July of this summer, in a championship unification clash. 

Both sharing their predictions ahead of ‘The Garden State’ title affair, Sterling maintains that once he defeats Cejudo at UFC 288, the former two-weight champion and Olympic gold medalist will call time on his professional career again.

Undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski has confirmed he rejected the opportunity to fight lightweight kingpin, Islam Makhachev in a rematch of their UFC 284 title showdown back in February – in a bid to remain active himself.

Volkanovski, a featherweight champion under the promotion’s banner, is slated to headline UFC 290 during International Fight Week in July – taking on interim division champion, Yair Rodrîguez in a title unification fight.

However, featuring once already earlier this year, the Australian headlined UFC 284 in Perth on home soil, suffering his first promotional loss in the form of a unanimous decision defeat against undisputed lightweight kingpin, Makhachev.

Alexander Volkanovski reveals he rejected a rematch with Islam Makhachev

With both fighters immediately noting their interest in an immediate championship re-run at the lightweight limit, Volkanovski claims the UFC had approached him with the opportunity to fight the Russian once again, however, he elected to reject the bout agreement – with a view to remain active rather than remain sidelined.

“That’s a tricky one, because you have (Beneil) Dariush – but that rematch [with Alexander Volkanovski] needs to happen,” Alexander Volkanovski told The Mac Life during a recent interview. “We need to make that happen, so I guess it’s a tricky one, we just need to see how things go. Me, I just want to remain active – that’s the big thing for me. I’m not the one to wait around, I know I could eventually get it. But what am I going to do? Just sit around and wait until – that’s just not me.”

“I’ll get my fights and do what I’ve got to do,” Alexander Volkanovski explained. “Yeah, that rematch definitely needs to happen, we’ll make that happen. I’ll just do my thing in July [at UFC 287] and see what happens from there.” 

As for Makhachev, the Russian has been linked with both a move to the welterweight limit in pursuit of a second Octagon title, however, is at least expected to return to the sport at UFC 294 in October as the promotion returns to Abu Dhabi, UAE. 

Furthermore, Makhachev also expressed his interest in fighting Volkanovski in a rematch — as per his coach, Javier Mendez, who insisted the Russian was not dodging a re-run with the former.

Sharing his thoughts on the matchup, Volkanovski claims Rodríguez may be the most dangerous fighters he has shared the Octagon with so far during his gold-laden UFC tenure.

“I’m looking at him (Yair Rodríguez) as a real challenger,” Alexander Volkanovski told The Mac Life during a recent interview. “Like, he’s a dangerous fighter. He could be one of the most dangerous fighters I’ve foguth, really. When you talk about unpredictability, knockout power, and so many different tools, you need to take him really serious (sic).”

Undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev remains open to the possibilty of fighting undisputed featherweight titleholder, Alexander Volkanovski in a potential rematch of their UFC 284 back-and-forth clash back in February of this year.

Headlining the flagship pay-per-view event in Perth, Australia – Islam Makhachev managed to successfully defend his undisputed lightweight crown at the first time of asking, defeating Volkanovski over the course of five rounds in a competitive unanimous decision victory.

The triumph came as Islam Makhachev’s twelfth consecutively at the lightweight limit, having previously clinched the vacant lightweight championship at UFC 280 back in October of last year in a second round arm-triangle submission win over former champion, Charles Oliveira.

However, as per Makhachev’s head coach, American Kickboxing Academy staple, Javier Mendez, the Makhachkala native is open to a future championship re-run with Volkanovski in the future.

“Was it a tought fight? Hell yeah,” Javier Mendez said on the Jibber with Jaber podcast. “Was it tougher than I thought? Hell yeah. Did they gain my full respects? Hell yeah, he got my respect. But am I looking forward to the rematch, if they have one? Hell yeah. I want that rematch and I know Islam (Makhachev) wants it too. So we’re not dodging nothing.”

“If the UFC puts that match together, it’s gonna happen,” Mendez explained. “It’s gonna happen willing on both parties. They’re (Alexander Volkanovski’s team) gonna want it, we’re gonna want it and I would hope they [the UFC] would make it a huge event because that fight delivered. It was everything that was expected.”
