Slobberknocker Alert: Jared Rosholt vs. Oleksiy Oliynyk Added to UFC on FOX 10

Now that Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva have made heavyweight slugfests cool again, we’re pleased to inform you that 9-1 prospect Jared Rosholt will face old-school Russian veteran Oleksiy Oliynyk (often referred to by the more-coherent spelling of Alexey Oleinik) at UFC on FOX 10: Henderson vs. Thomson, January 25th in Chicago. The UFC announced the booking over the weekend.

Rosholt won his Octagon debut on the TUF 18 Finale prelims, brawling his way to a unanimous decision victory against Walt Harris. Though he comes from a very decorated collegiate wrestling background at Oklahoma State University, Rosholt has preferred to stand and throw bombs thus far in his MMA career.

As for Oliynyk, he most recently caught our attention with his neck-crank submission of Mirko Cro Cop at Legend Fight Show 2 in Moscow last month. The win was Oliynyk’s ninth in a row (all by stoppage), including previous submissions of Jeff Monson, Tony Lopez, and Dion Staring. Overall, Oliynyk has compiled a record of 48-9-1 through 16 damn years of competition. He made his MMA debut when the sport still looked like this. He lost to Chael Sonnen in Bodog seven years ago. He was a YAMMA semi-finalist for God’s sake. And now, at the age of 36, he’s fighting in the UFC for the first time. Do you believe in miracles?

The current lineup for UFC on FOX 10 is after the jump…

Legend 2 Mini-Recap: A Neck Crank? A F*CKING NECK CRANK?!!

(“He got Mark Coleman’d,” indeed. Video via whatever Youtube channel this is.)

Remember how we said the guy who replaced Aleks Emelianenko against Mirko Crop Cop at Legends 2 probably stood a better chance of defeating the Croatian than Emelianenko did? Well consider this the saddest “we told you so” in CagePotato history. And quite possibly the first.

It’s been a strange journey for Mirko Cro Cop ever since he “retired” from the sport at UFC 137: he’s broken a CP ban, armbarred a sumo wrestler in his MMA return, and somewhat surprisingly won a K1 Grand Prix. Why a legend like Cro Cop — who has admitted to being “worn out” for years now — feels the need to continue competing is beyond us, and honestly, we’re past the point of arguing about it. It’s not like he’s been getting brutally, repeatedly KO’d or anything, and besides, we were still peeing our pants with excitement when his rematch with Emelianenko was announced.

But after watching his fight with Alexey Oleinik at Legend 2 last Friday, we think it’s safe to assume that Mirko has officially entered the “Money Up Front” phase of his MMA career.

Sure, it’s not like Mirko showed up at 300+ pounds or anything, and it’s not like he was fighting a scrub. But a neck crank? A F*CKING NECK CRANK?!

I say this as one of the biggest Cro Cop fans out there: Retire, Mirko. Retire for good and stop breaking my heart.

Elsewhere on the Legend card, UFC castaway Paul Daley saw a four fight win streak snapped via unanimous decision at the hands of Alexander “Bad Boy” Yakovlev, a 20-4 Russian who is now 21-4 (I dunno, that’s all I got). While Daley dominated many of the standup exchanges in typical fashion, his achilles heel of wrestling was once again exposed by Yakovlev, who mixed up some takedowns and decent ground-n-pound attacks to neutralize Daley for the majority of the fight.

In the kickboxing realm, Badr Hari picked up a unanimous decision victory over Alexey Ignashov in a K-1 Superfight that was as sloppy at times as it was enjoyable. Here’s a gif of Ignashov just missing a head kick in what looks like a poorly choreographed, B-movie fight scene (via Zombie Prophet).

And finally in people you’ve heard of who fought at this event, Melvin Manhoef was routed by Zabit Samedov en route to a unanimous decision loss in a 205 lb. K-1 sem-final tournament bout. Unfortunately, Samedov was not able to continue in the tournament due to a cut suffered during the fight and was replaced by Agron Preteni. It just goes to show that Melvin Manhoef’s legs are a threat to every living creature on this earth.

We’ve thrown a full video of the fight below. Enjoy.

NOOOOOOOO!!! Aleksander Emelianenko Out of Cro Cop Rematch Due to Legal Troubles, Replaced By Some Other Russian Dude

(There’s no way I or any of you are topping “I must bake you,” but feel free to give it a shot in the comments section.)

You guys might recall that Aleksander Emelianenko was tentatively scheduled to rematch Mirko Cro Cop at the end of the year — an announcement that was somewhat gushed over here at CagePotato. That was, of course, until Emelianenko decided to beat up a 63 year-old army veteran on his birthday. Classy stuff, Al. Unfortunately for us PRIDE fanboys, the resulting legal action taken against Emelianenko has ensured that none such rematch will happen.

FightersOnly passes along the news that Emelianenko has been pulled from his Legends 2 fight with Cro Cop on November 8th and replaced by some other Russian dude named Alex. Specifically, Alexey “The Boa Constrictor” Oleinik, who it turns out might be a bigger threat to Cro Cop than Emelianenko could ever dream of being:

Alexey Oleinik fighter will replace him, says promoter Ruslan Suleymanov. Oleinik is a Bellator and KSW veteran with a 47-9 record. He is known as ‘The Boa Constrictor’ and has 38 submissions wins to his name.

“This is one of the top Russian heavyweights in MMA. Oleynik won many times over the last few months. With Alexei we can expect a very good fight,” said Sulejmanov.

Despite suffering the misfortune of being TKO’d by Neil Grove in his most mainstream appearance (under the Bellator banner back in 2010), Oleinik will be riding an eight fight win streak into his fight with Cro Cop that includes submission victories over Jeff Monson (!), Tony “Don’t Mad Dog Ma Wife” Lopez and Dion Staring.

It should be noted, however, that Olenik holds zero PRIDE fights to his credit. Therefore, this matchup is garbage-ass and I hate it and you and everyone else who approves of it and you can all go f*ck yourselves.

Alexey Oleinik, Jose Vega and Lisa Ward all won to advance to the semifinals of their respective Bellator Fighting Championships Season 3 tournaments Thursday night at Bellator 26 in Kansas City.

In a bloody mess of a fight in the heavyweight tournament, Oleinik and Mike Hayes slugged it out for 15 minutes. It wasn’t an easy fight to score, and could have gone either way, but two judges scored it 29-28 Oleinik while one scored it 29-28 Hayes. It’s a good thing for Bellator that Oleinik got the decision, as Hayes had a nasty cut on his right eye that likely would have prevented him from moving on to the semifinals.

As it is, Oleinik will face Neil Grove in one semifinal fight, while Cole Konrad will face Damian Grabowski in the other heavyweight tournament semifinal.
