Alistair Overeem GLORY Suspension Surprised Him

Alistair Overeem’s team vehemently denies the use of any performance-enhancing drugs following a 12-month suspension handed down by GLORY Kickboxing.

The promotion announced that ‘The Demolition Man’ had been suspended for one year after testing positive for a banned substance surrounding his October trilogy bout with Badr Hari at GLORY COLLISION 4.

“Alistair Overeem has been removed from the GLORY rankings and his fight again Badr Hari is ruled a ‘No Contest’ due to a violation of GLORY’s anti-doping rules,” GLORY announced in an official statement. “His suspension is for 12 months, starting at his last fight – COLLISION 4. And he must return a percentage of his wages.”

Following the promotion’s announcement, Alistair Overeem’s trainer Nick Hemmers went on record stating that an anti-inflammatory medication was responsible for the positive test and not a performance-enhancing drug.

“Apparently a minimal amount of it was found in his blood…. He has not used any means to be stronger in the ring,” Hemmers stated. “I think it’s nonsense that his victory was taken away. We simply won that match against Badr, and I will always say that.”

Alistair Overeem’s Team Released an Official Statement

Alistair Overeem’s management team also issued a statement on the situation, saying:

“We have taken note of the removal of Alistair from the ranking. After the B-sample was also positive, it was to be expected that his fight against Badr Hari would be converted to ‘No Contest’. We are talking about trace amounts of a supplement that Alistair has used for recovery from an injury, which is not performance-enhancing.

“This injury occurred during the preparations for his fight with Rico (Verhoeven). It surprised Alistair that after eight months traces were still found in his system. For now, we will rest and wait and see what comes next.”

This is not the first time that Alistair Overeem has tested positive for banned substances in his combat sports career. In 2012, ‘The Demolition Man’ was scheduled to challenge then-UFC champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 146. Weeks before the bout, it was revealed by the NSAC that Overeem had an abnormally high testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio which he attributed to a doctor-prescribed “anti-inflammatory medication that was mixed with testosterone.”

Alistair Overeem is ready to settle rivalry with Badr Hari in a trilogy fight at Glory Collision 4

In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Alistair Overeem talked about coming back to fighting professionally after a year and eight-month hiatus.

“It’s been in a minute but again, eager to get back in there, shape is tremendous, phenomenal,” Overeem said (ht Middle Easy). “I’m just hungry to get back in there and yes last fight was a bit ago but you know you’re fighting in the gym, right? You’re sparring in the gym so it’s not like there’s no activity. It’s not like I’m laying on the couch. I always train,  I’ve turned everything up not one but five notches for this fight.

Overeem is targeting a fight with Rico Verhoeven

Overeem hinted that he would train even harder for a potential bout with the reigning Glory heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven after.

And we’re probably going to turn it up two more for the Rico fight. Not looking ahead of things but I do believe I’m going to come out of this victorious with everything I have. And that’s gonna be interesting.”

There’ll be some adrenaline boiling right because you know, there’s gonna be some collision, Collision 4 but yeah, I did my homework.”

The trilogy bout between Alistair Overeem and Badr Hari is set.

AD.nl made the news official, first reporting the matchup. Overeem signed with GLORY back in June of last year, and was initially scheduled to return in October against heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven. However, Overeem was sidelined with an injury ahead of the bout.

Now, the 42-year-old will return to take his first professional kickboxing fight since 2010. He exited the sport on a five-fight win streak. His last defeat hasn’t come since 2009 when he was finished by none other than Hari himself via first-round TKO as a result of the two-knockdown rule.

Now, he’ll get the chance to avenge that loss. As for Hari, he’s currently on a three-fight losing streak inside the ring, with two No Contests to go along with it. His last victory hasn’t come since August of 2015.

When Overeem and Hari did meet for the very first time in December of 2008 in Japan, Overeem finished Hari with a left hook in the first round. Hari would avenge that loss the following year, leaving them 1-1 heading into this third fight.

Overeem ventures back into kickboxing after a career in mixed martial arts (MMA) lasting over 20 years. “The Demolition Man” has competed for promotions such as PRIDE FC, Strikeforce, DREAM, and, of course, the UFC.

Now, Overeem will look to see if he can return over a decade later and increase his win streak to six in the world of kickboxing. GLORY Collision 4 will take place this October with no official date or venue set as of this writing.

Alistair Overeem, Badr Hari

UFC veteran Alistair Overeem is slated to fight Badr Hari for the third time this October at GLORY Collision 4.

Early last year, UFC chose to part ways with Alistair Overeem after he lost his final outing under the banner to Alexander Volkov in Feb 2021. As a seasoned professional of the sport, Overeem has competed in the most well-known promotions through the years having started his professional career in 1999.

After a two-decade-long career that saw him fight in PRIDE FC, Strikeforce, DREAM, K-1 Kickboxing, and the UFC, Overeem will finally be making his first showing under GLORY.

For his debut match in the promotion, Alistair Overeem has been matched up against longtime rival Badr Hari for a third fight. While the 42-year-old Dutch was previously scheduled to face the heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven, ‘The Demolition Man’ was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury last October. While most athletes take their chops to MMA after specializing in one area, Overeem maintained a balance between MMA and kickboxing. He made his debut in both sports in the same year and although he spent most of his career in MMA, he also holds a record of 10-4 in kickboxing.

Alistair Overeem-Badr Hari: A History Spanning Decades

Alistair Overeem has been a long-standing fixture in the field of combat sports barring boxing. Making his debut in the UFC in 2011, Overeem secured a win over Brock Lesnar via TKO. He has also stood toe-to-toe with current UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, Stipe Miocic, Chuck Liddell, Mirko Cro Cop, and many more.

Badr Hari is no exception when compared in terms of longevity. Having fought most of the best heavyweight fighters, Hari has had a career that spanned generations since his professional debut in 2002. Hari has also held titles in K-1 kickboxing and It’s Showtime. He was also twice a runner-up in K-1 Grand Prix tournaments and has challenged the prolific Rico Verhoeven twice for the GLORY heavyweight crown.

Their first encounter came in a K-1 and DREAM crossover event Dynamite!! 2008. Overeem dispatched Hari with a knockout in the first round to upset the oddsmakers. In their second clash in the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 tournament, Hari was able to avenge his loss by knocking out Overeem in the opening round of the semi-final matchup.

Now, Overeem and Hari will put their record on the line to come out on top of their rivalry with one win over the other at GLORY Collision 4 this October. No exact date or location has been confirmed as of yet.
