Aljamain Sterling has been vocal about wanting a title shot, but he might have to get through one top fellow prospect to do so.

This comes days after Sterling beat Pedro Munhoz in a bantamweight bout at the UFC 238 pay-per-view (PPV) event from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. As a result of the win, “The Funkmaster” extended his win streak to four-straight inside the Octagon.

Top 135-pound prospect Petr Yan recently called out Sterling through the power of social media. Yan has seen Sterling talking about how he wants a shot at UFC bantamweight and flyweight champion Henry Cejudo. However, Yan believes that if Cejudo defends his flyweight title next, then he should fight Sterling for the interim bantamweight title in the main event of UFC Moscow.

It should be noted that the UFC has yet to announce a fight card in Russia, but there is an event that doesn’t have a location revealed set for November 22 for the UFC on ESPN+ 22 show.

Yan took to his official Twitter account where he wrote the following:

“If Cejudo will defend his flyweight title next, I can fight @FunkMaster_UFC for the interim belt in the main event of UFC Moscow in November. Anyone else like this idea? @danawhite @seanshelby.”

Aljamain Sterling Extremely Confident He Can Beat Henry Cejudo

Aljamain Sterling is riding high after an extremely impressive performance in his latest outing under the UFC banner.

Sterling beat Pedro Munhoz in a bantamweight bout at the UFC 238 pay-per-view (PPV) event from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday night (June 8, 2019). Now, he thinks he’s in line for a title shot.

As a result of this win, the rising prospect extended his win streak to four straight inside the Octagon. Thus, now, he believes it’s his time to get in the main event spotlight to challenge UFC bantamweight and flyweight champion Henry Cejudo for the 135-pound title.

This also comes after Cejudo won the vacant bantamweight title with a TKO over Marlon Moraes. Sterling believes he has all the tools to dethrone “Triple C” and become the division’s new champion:

“I think I possess all the talent in the world to compete with Henry,” Sterling told Luke Thomas during an appearance on The MMA Hour. “Henry is a tough dude, man. I think he is the pound-for-pound greatest combat athlete today. No one has done what he’s been able to accomplish. But, I will say this, when I beat him, ‘Henry Cedoodo,’ what does that make me?

The pound-for-pound king. So that’s what I’m looking to get for my next title. So go out there, beat up Henry and I think I’ll be able to take that title. For some reason I always thought he’d have to defend his 135 title because he wouldn’t have to cut so much weight,” Sterling said. “But right now, I don’t there’s a clear number contender at 125. Maybe Joseph Benavidez?

They fought already and he has a win over Henry. Maybe Jussier Formiga? But those guys are fighting each other. So, depending on the results of that, it’s going to be decided on what’s the more intriguing matchup. Hopefully it’s me. Hopefully they have a boring fight. That’s what I’m hoping for. I’m hoping I did enough to impress the UFC brass.”

Time will tell whether Sterling gets what he wants, as Cejudo has options. He can defend the bantamweight title or flyweight title next – each division with a number of contenders ready for their opportunity. Or, perhaps he goes up to featherweight and tries to capture a third title, as he hinted at this past weekend.

Petr Yan: I’d Beat Aljamain Sterling, Henry Cejudo On The Same Night

UFC bantamweight contender Petr Yan is not lacking in confidence whatsoever.

The Russian enjoyed a unanimous decision win over Jimmie Rivera at UFC 237 this past weekend. It extended his hot streak to five straight wins since debuting in the UFC last year. He wasn’t the only bantamweight in action on the night either. Aljamain Sterling defeated Pedro Munhoz via unanimous decision in a pivotal 135-pound clash while Henry Cejudo became the bantamweight champion following his TKO win over Marlon Moraes.

Many now believe Sterling should be Cejudo’s first bantamweight title defense, however, Yan was not impressed with his performance. In fact, he went as far as saying he would defeat both fighters on the same night.

“I watched (Aljamain) Sterling’s (win over Pedro Munhoz), and with all due respect, I was not impressed at all,” Yan said at the post-fight press conference. “I would beat him and the champion (Henry Cejudo) in one night.”

Yan Wants Two Belts As Well

Following his win over Moraes, Cejudo called out the likes of Dominick Cruz, Cody Garbrandt and Urijah Faber. Yan would naturally like the next title shot, but is willing to wait and see what the UFC decides.

As for his thoughts on Cejudo’s choice of callouts? Here’s what he had to say:

“I don’t know, maybe he just wants to fight the old guys,” Yan added. “I’m young, hungry, 26 years old, and I’m eager to take this opportunity to fight for the belt. I want to have two belts on my shoulder too.”

Whatever happens when it comes to Cejudo’s first title defense, there’s certainly bound to be some unhappy fighters.
