Aljamain Sterling still fuming about being coerced into O'Malley fight at UFC 292: 'I succumbed to the pressure'

Aljamain Sterling is ready to close the book on what is undoubtedly the biggest regret of his mixed martial arts career.

In August, the ‘Funk Master’ surrendered his bantamweight world title following an early second-round knockout against Sean O’Malley at UFC 292. A mere three months earlier, Sterling successfully defended his title against Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, giving him little time to properly heal and prepare for ‘Sugar.’

Sterling has been quite vocal about the pressure he received from the promotion to jump right back into the fire after going five hard rounds with Cejudo. Now the recently released Fight Inc: Inside The UFC documentary is forcing him to relive it all over again.

In one behind-the-scenes clip, the promotion’s Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell asks Sterling to take the August fight not long after securing his third-straight title defense.

Needless to say, seeing the scene brought all of Sterling’s aggravation bubbling back to the surface.

“From that night, I said, I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “‘I have no desire to fight right now.’ And that was the whole thing I was saying. I have to heal up and see how my body holds up. We can fast forward, yes, I came into the fight compromised, into the training camp compromised. O’Malley got hurt during his training camp, two completely different things, but still the same. Both guys came into the fight with some lingering injuries.

“I think the difference was, in my personal opinion, the mind set. I think O’Malley was there to win at all costs. I was there to win, but I was also just there to be a participant. I hate to say it, but it’s the harsh reality. There’s a complete difference when someone is on, when they’re in the zone, and you can see when someone’s flowing, everything just went perfect.

“In a basketball game, in a football game, fighting, wrestling, when someone’s just on. You ever see those guys in wrestling tournaments that end up winning the whole thing as an unseeded person because something just clicked? They want to be there, they’re excited, and everything was just in sync for them. I didn’t feel that that night in August. No excuses, once again, no excuses. The better man that night won” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Aljamain Sterling still frustrated by the poor pPV buyrate of uFC 292

While the subject is still a sore one for the former 135-pound champ, Aljamain Sterling’s biggest regret isn’t necessarily taking the fight on short notice or even putting himself in a position to lose the belt.

“The only thing I say I regret is if I knew the pay-per-view numbers were going to be what it was, I would have just sat until January, February, March, and waited to fight,” Sterling said. “That’s the only thing I regret, because I felt like it was the opportunity of a lifetime after saying no, being coerced into doing it. Nobody put a gun to my head. I eventually succumbed to the pressure and said, ‘OK, fine. I’ll do it. And after this I’m going on my vacation.’ I said, win or lose I’m going on my vacation.”

“In hindsight, I wish I stuck to my guns and just waited, because the bag of loot, the golden pot, Lucky Charms, or whatever at the end of the rainbow — I mean, I made good money, but it wasn’t what I was thinking it was going to be, and I’m motivated by money. I’m a freaking prizefighter, I fight for money. We all do. So if the bag was going to be that and it was known, obviously, hindsight 20/20, I would have just opted to chill.”

The buyrate for UFC 292 has not been released, but insider reports claim that the event drew in somewhere around 350,000 purchases.

According to a report from Hal Singer, champions typically receive $1 for every pay-per-view ticket sold when the buyrate lands between 200,000 and 400,000. Over 400,000, the payout doubles to $2 per PPV purchase and then again bumps up to $2.50 once the event eclipses more than 600,000.

That would mean Aljamain Sterling took home an extra $350,000 in addition to his base pay and other bonuses. In total, the ‘Funk Master’ is said to have left Boston with nearly $1.3 million.

Six weeks before the biggest fight of his UFC career, Sean O’Malley suffered a rib injury.

‘Sugar’ stepped inside the Octagon on August 19, 2023, for his first crack at UFC gold, squaring off with then-bantamweight world champion Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 in Boston, Mass. Less than a minute into the second round, O’Malley delivered a picture-perfect counter right that sent the ‘Funk Master’ crashing to the canvas. A few follow-up shots later and we had ourselves a new 135-pound king.

Following the fight, O’Malley revealed that he had sustained a rib injury while training that prevented him from grappling for the final month and a half of his fight camp.

Courtesy of the promotion’s newest documentary, Fight Inc: Inside The UFC, we now have footage of the exact moment that Sean O’Malley sustained the injury.

Sean O’Malley slated for 2024 returns to take on the division’s No. 1 contender

Fortunately, the injury played little role in the fight itself.

Since then, O’Malley has added a successful title defense to his resume, handily defeating Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera in the UFC 299 headliner in Miami. Next on the docket for ‘Sugar’ is a showdown against the division’s No. 1 ranked contender, Merab Dvalishvili.

No official announcements have been made, but both fighters have pointed toward their inevitable clash going down on September 16 when the promotion heads to Sphere in Las Vegas for UFC 306.

Rekindling his rivalry with undisputed bantamweight champion, Sean O’Malley earlier this month, former division titleholder, Aljamain Sterling claims if he was to stand opposite the Montana striker in a rematch, he would beat him – chalking up his loss last year to a bad night at the office.

Sterling, a former undisputed bantamweight champion and the sole gold holder in the division to rack up three consecutive successful title defense wins, saw his record-setting reign come to a halt last August at the hands of bitter rival, O’Malley.

Headlining in his second straight fight on the East Coast, Uniondale native, Sterling suffered a second round knockout loss to the Dana White’s Contender Series product, dropping his undisputed bantamweight crown as a result.

And since making a successful switch to the featherweight limit in the form of a unanimous decision shutout win over Calvin Kattar at UFC 300 last month, Sterling reignited his rivalry with O’Malley last week, labelling him a “sorry-a**” champion amid his war of words with his teammate, Merab Dvalishvili.

Aljamain Sterling confident of beating Sean O’Malley in rematch

Reflecting on his knockout loss to the polarizing O’Malley, Serra-Longo MMA staple, Sterling claimed if were to fight the current titleholder in rematch, he would put his life savings on the table that he would avenge said defeat.

“(Sean) O’Malley showed up that night,” Aljamain Sterling told Kanpai Media. “It was an off night for myself, and the better man won that night. That’s why we say, ‘Any place, anywhere, any time.’ Sometimes it’s your night, sometimes it’s not, and unfortunately for me, it just didn’t go my way.”

“But I do know that if I had a rematch, and as long as he waited from August to fighting ‘Chito’ (Marlon Vera) in March, you give me that time to recover, and prepare and to cut my weight the proper way, in a rematch, I would bet my life savings on that,” Aljamain Sterling explained.

Linked with a return before the end of the year, Sterling has been floated as a potential opponent for Russian contender, Movsar Evloev, with the pair searching for a route to a title fight with incumbent featherweight best, Ilia Topuria.

As for O’Malley, the Montana native is expected to feature once again before the end of the annum, and has been linked heavily in recent weeks with a UFC 306 headlining feature at the Las Vegas Sphere against the above-mentioned, Dvalishvili

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling has hit out at past foe, current division titleholder, Sean O’Malley – claiming the Montana native is cherrypicking his fights, as he struggles to land a date for a rumored clash with Merab Dvalishvili.

Sterling, a former undisputed bantamweight champion, made his featherweight divisional debut with aplomb last month at UFC 300 – turning in a dominant unanimous decision win over perennial contender, Calvin Kattar.

The outing came as Uniondale native, Sterling’s first since he dropped bantamweight spoils against O’Malley back in August of last year, courtesy of a second round KO defeat.

And fresh from a similarly one-sided decision win of his own against Marlon Vera at UFC 299 back in March, O’Malley has been heavily linked with a pairing against the surging number one contender, Dvalishvili – a close friend and training partner of Sterling.

Replying to Dvalishvili’s claims that he would beat O’Malley and then his head coach, Tim Welch – the champion warned him that he would beat the Georgian’s best friend, in a sneering jibe at Sterling.

Aljamain Sterling rips arch-rival, Sean O’Malley

Drawing a fiery response from Serra-Longo MMA staple, Sterling – the ex-champion urged O’Malley to actually fight a top contender next, before labelling a “sorry” titleholder.

“You’re a sorry champion,” Aljamain Sterling posted on his official X account in response to Sean O’Malley. “Keep bragging about a handicapped fight to give you the best odds to win. You’re not a real man, my guy. ‘Don’t try to duck the number one contender again to fight number 15 this time or some other pointless lame fight.”

As for a return to the Octagon, Sterling has been linked with a main event clash against the surging Russian grappler, Movsar Evloev in what would come as his sophomore outing at the featherweight limit.

UFC CEO Dana White busted betting on NFL games during ‘least fun fight anybody’s ever seen’

As undefeated Russian standout Movsar Evloev was bagging his 18th career win, UFC CEO Dana White was placing bets on a football game.

Back in January, Evloev stepped inside the Octagon for a featherweight clash with Arnold Allen as part of the UFC 297 main card. Despite walking away with a decisive decision victory, Evloev left a lot to be desired with his performance, leading White to call it “the least fun fight anybody’s ever seen.”

Movsar Evloev vs. Arnold Allen

A truly remarkable statement coming from a man who once sat through Namajunas vs. Esparza 2.

While White’s criticism is not entirely off-base, it turns out the UFC bossman may not have actually seen most of the fight.

“Dana said that my last fight was not entertaining,” Evloev said on the Badaev Podcast. “Maybe he wanted to motivate me somehow or dampen my championship ambitions a little. Then we talked with [American Top Team owner] Dan Lambert after the fight. He said, ‘Movsar, I was sitting next to Dana White during your fight, and he was watching American Football.’ He had apparently placed a bet somewhere during my fight. I told Dana, ‘I’m not here to amuse you, I came here for the belt.’ I’ll take the belt, and then we’ll see” (h/t MMA Mania).

Evolev’s story is plausible considering White is a self-described “degenerate gambler” who once lost a whopping $3 million in a single night.

Evloev has his sights on a uFC featherweight title eliminator with Aljamain sterling

Having won eight in a row under the UFC banner, Movsar Evloev is sitting comfortably as the promotion’s No. 5 ranked featherweight. No announcements have been made regarding the Russian’s next opponent, but a potential title eliminator with former bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling appears to be in the cards.

The ‘Funk Master’ made his featherweight debut, delivering “the most dominant performance” of the night against Calvin Kattar at UFC 300.
