When Angela Hill makes the walk to the Octagon against Michelle Waterson in the main event of UFC Vegas 10, she will be the first African-American woman to headline a show.

It is no doubt a big deal for Hill and she says she is proud and honored to be the first.

“It’s big, and I didn’t even realize how big it was until (my manager) mentioned it to me,” Hill told reporters during her UFC on ESPN+ 35 virtual media scrum (via MMAJunkie). “I think in a time like this, people need heroes people need someone to look up to, someone to root for. And just the fact that this hasn’t happened yet is indicative of the fact that it is important.

“A lot of people would say, ‘Why does it matter?’ But if it doesn’t matter to you, that’s OK, but it does matter to the fans who see that and they’re like, ‘Finally, finally, we have some representation. Finally we have a face in this sport that we love, and we’ve been waiting for so long.’”

It also means more to Angela Hill given what is going on in the United States with the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Its really cool to be a part of the Black Lives Matter movement,” Hill explained. “It’s really important, and I think people try to pretend that it’s not and call it things that it isn’t because it’s hard to look at the violence. It’s hard to say there’s something wrong when you haven’t experienced it yourself.

“I think the reason it’s so important to Black people is because they’ve all had moments where they felt in danger or they felt they weren’t considered as human as their white counterparts, and it’s not something that disappeared when (former President Barack) Obama got elected. It’s not something that disappeared once cops got body cams. It’s something that’s still hurting the community right now. I think with the pandemic that’s going on right now, with just everything just being so divisive, it’s really brought it to light and made people pay attention to how hard the struggles are and the fact there needs to be some change.”

Angela Hill is coming off a controversial decision loss to Claudia Gadelha in May and is looking to return to the win column against Michelle Waterson.

Michelle Waterson vs. Angela Hill Is The New UFC Vegas 10 Main Event

Michelle WatersonMichelle Waterson takes on Angela Hill in the main event spot at UFC Vegas 10 main event after Glover Teixeira tests positive for Covid-19.

Michelle Waterson

Michelle Waterson returns to headline UFC Vegas 10 main event after Covid-19 forces yet another cancellation.

After Glover Teixeira tested positive for Covid-19, next Saturday’s UFC main event looked in crisis. However, according to BJPenn.com, Waterson vs. Hill has been promoted to the vacant main event slot.

The bout will also be upgraded to five rounds, which is very surprising considering the change is at such short notice. Short notice promotions to the main event usually involve the fight remaining three-rounds. For example, Last Saturday’s main event between Aleksandar Rakic and Anthony Smith remained only three-rounds. This was despite it being promoted to the main event at short notice following Zabit Magomedsharipov vs. Yair Rodriguez falling through.

Michelle Waterson will be looking to put an end to her two-fight losing streak next Saturday. This streak consists of Waterson dropping a tight split decision to Carla Esparza at UFC 249, and losing to Joanna Jedrzejczyk by decision in the main event spot at UFC Tampa.

Angela Hill will also be looking to bounce back from defeat after a controversial split decision loss to Claudia Gadelha in May. This loss crushed her impressive three-fight winning streak. During her run, “Overkill” collected stoppage wins over Ariane Carnelossi, Hannah Cifers, and a decision win over Loma Lookboonmee. Hill currently sits at 13th in the UFCs strawweight rankings.

Waterson is no stranger to main eventing in the UFC, with this being her third. However, this is the first time Hill will be headlining a card. There is plenty to fight for in this five-round bout, with the winner having a good argument for challenging a top-five opponent and be only one or two wins away from a title shot.

With Michelle Waterson vs. Angela Hill being the main event, the card is now as follows:

  • Angela Hill vs. Michelle Waterson
  • Andrea Lee vs. Roxanne Modafferi
  • Tyson Nam vs. Matt Schnell
  • Bruno Silva vs. Tagir Ulanbekov
  • Frank Camacho vs. Brok Weaver
  • Kyle Nelson vs. Billy Quarantillo
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Anthony Ivy
  • Matt Frevola vs. Roosevelt Roberts
  • Bobby Green vs. Alan Patrick
  • Mike Rodriguez vs. Ed Herman
  • Justine Kish vs. Sabina Mazo
  • Ottman Azaitar vs. Khama Worthy

A women’s strawweight contest between Michelle Waterson and Angela Hill is set for the UFC’s upcoming August 22 event.

That’s according to MMA Junkie who confirmed the matchup with a number of UFC officials. The fight is not official yet but an announcement is expected soon.

Waterson, Hill Looking To Rebound

Both fighters are coming off controversial split decision losses.

Waterson suffered a split decision loss to Carla Esparza at UFC 249 last month which she felt she clearly should have won. Her previous outing was a unanimous decision defeat to another former champion in Joanna Jedrzejczyk last year which means she is now on the second losing skid of her career.

Hill, meanwhile, saw her three-fight winning streak halted after suffering a split verdict defeat to former title challenger Claudia Gadelha last month at UFC Florida. Of the 17 media members who scored the fight, 13 notably scored it Hill’s way.

The pair will be looking to set things right when they meet each other next.

Here is how the August 22 card is looking as of now:

  • Uriah Hall vs. Yoel Romero
  • Mizuki Inoue vs. Amanda Lemos
  • Mariya Agapova vs. Shana Dobson
  • Angela Hill vs. Michelle Waterson

What do you make of the fight and how the August 22 card currently looks?
