Anthony Joshua has lifted the lid on what actually happened prior to his first fight with Andy Ruiz Jr. back in June.

Joshua regained his unified heavyweight titles following a unanimous decision victory over Ruiz in their rematch on Saturday. Of course, he lost his titles to the Mexican-American in the summer where he suffered a seventh-round TKO defeat.

Some of the rumors that came out afterward were that he had been knocked out in sparring leading up to the first fight while another was that he suffered a panic attack as well.

While he didn’t mention any of those, Joshua did touch on an issue with his health that he corrected prior to the rematch.

“I had some issue with my health which I was going through for a long time,” Joshua told BBC Radio 5 live (via The Mirror). “In the changing room before the fight I got a bucket of ice and was putting my head in it thinking ‘why do I feel so tired?’

After my check-ups it showed what the problem was and this is what you have to get sorted. Even in this camp I had an operation done but as I’d started training in June I had no issues.”

It certainly paid dividends as “AJ” put on a boxing clinic on Ruiz with a disciplined albeit conservative performance. Despite the criticism towards the actual fight, Joshua feels he has even more energy compared to his first fight with Ruiz:

“The responsibilities of being world champion are difficult,” he added. “All that stuff, feeling so tired, dealing with obligations. Now I have energy, I haven’t missed a session.”

What do you make of Joshua’s revelation?

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was not pleased with the performances of Anthony Joshua or Andy Ruiz Jr. in their unified title rematch.

Joshua became a two-time unified heavyweight champion following his unanimous decision triumph over Ruiz on Saturday. It wasn’t as action-packed as the first fight but Joshua was able to get the job done by staying on the outside and jabbing his way to victory.

But that’s not how a heavyweight champion should perform according to Wilder:

“Joshua did what he had to do to get the win. He ran around the ring and was on his bike all day,” Wilder told The Athletic. “Basically, he had (former champion Wladimir) Klitschko in the camp and he was a lot like Klitschko: that jab-grab-hold method. That’s all he did tonight.

“You want to dominate guys, man! Maybe I’m just too rough, too hardcore and too much of a dream for this time and era, maybe the world wants that nice shit … my mentality is so different from these other fighters. But when I think of myself as a champion — as a champion! — you want to come out there and whoop his ass.

“I’m not coming in, after losing to this guy, to just dance and grab and jab and hold. I’m going to show the world and convince them I am the very best and that no one is close to me, especially with what’s going on in the division right now. It’s a time of proving who is the best.”

Wilder Criticizes Ruiz As Well

Ruiz didn’t escape criticism from Wilder either. “The Bronze Bomber” was hoping for Ruiz to win so that it would accelerate a potential title unification fight seeing as both fighters are under the PBC banner.

That’s not happening now as Wilder unloaded on Ruiz for his performance as well as post-fight comments that he wasn’t fully prepared:

“People say I have no skills, but my intellect is high enough to know if I’d been in a situation like (Ruiz) and something’s not working, you’ve got to change up my style,” he added. “I’m smart enough to know: Cut the fucking ring off.

“Once you cut the ring off, you put Joshua in a corner and you can have your way with him by hitting him the way you did the first time. To be in boxing that long and not know how to cut the ring off? If he knew, he didn’t do it, or he didn’t have the intellect. I’m a little upset with him.

“… Ruiz said he was doing great, not letting this moment get to him, but in the end you hear him saying he ate too much and should’ve trained harder … like, what the fuck? What do you mean you ate too much and could’ve trained harder?

“I take this shit seriously. I don’t know what their mentality is, but I didn’t become champion of the world just to say, ‘Put me in the record books. At least I can say I was a champion. They can never take that away from me!’ Fuck that shit! I’m here for legacy. Long live the king! That’s my mentality, and America should love a world champion like me.”

Do you agree with Wilder?

Andy Ruiz Jr has blamed excessive partying on last nights loss to Anthony Joshua. The first ever Mexican heavyweight champion was easily beaten by the Brit who regained the titles he spectacularly lost to Ruiz back in June.

Joshua stuck behind his jab for most of the fight in Saudi Arabia. Ruiz was unable to get off his punches and lost a wide unanimous decision to relinquish his belts at the first defence.

Ruiz Jr weighed in over a stone heavier for this massive rematch. To everyone’s surprise he tipped the scale at 20.3st (284lbs) a weight that has only been beaten by 7ft giant Nikoli Valuev in boxing history.

In his post fight press conference Ruiz Jr admitted the weight gain wasn’t intentional and he had let celebrating hamper his preparation. (H/T Matchroom Boxing)

“I think we started too late,” he said. “I don’t want to say that the three months of partying and celebrating that I had and whatnot kind of affected me, because it kind of did. (Transcribed by The Express)

“What can I say? I learn this mistake, and I’m glad I’ve learned it
while I’m still young.”

Speaking on the fight itself he was hypercritical of his performance.

“I was just following him, I felt like I
wasn’t doing what I do best, letting my hands go,” Ruiz continued. I was leaving myself open, taking all of his best shots, and I’ll do
better in the next one.

Ruiz was pushing for a third fight which is unlikely to happen at this
oint. But if he gets another shot he already knows exactly what needs to be
done.

“What would I do different? Listen to my coach and listen to my Dad and
be more concentrated on the fight, take it more serious. There’s no excuses, I
need to take it more serious.

“There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with being a champion of the world, so I think that the partying and that stuff got the best of me. Next time I’ll be a lot better.”

Could Andy Ruiz Jr of beaten Anthony Joshua again with a better camp?
