Andy Ruiz Jr. and Anthony Joshua are set to run things back after their initial meeting this past June.

The Mexican knocked Joshua out in the seventh round of their unified heavyweight title meeting. It was the first defeat of Joshua’s professional boxing career. Now, the two will run things back on neutral ground, in Saudi Arabia, on December 7. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the rematch, Ruiz said he advises his English counterpart to take time off if he loses to him again.

“I think he should take a little break if I beat him,” Ruiz said. “Let him recuperate, but one or two losses are not going to make a difference. He’s still a warrior, he’s still a great fighter, and I’m sure he’ll bounce back.”

Although the pair will be fighting opposite one another, there has been a great deal of mutual respect along the way. In fact, Joshua praised Ruiz for being a true and deserving champion, something that means a lot to Ruiz.

“It means a lot,” said Ruiz. “He said that because I defeated him. He was the greatest heavyweight champion of the world. He had all the belts and now I do, so it’s a big blessing to be in this position.”

Anthony Joshua has revealed where his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr. will be taking place, and nobody could’ve expected the selection.

Joshua took to Instagram today (Fri. August 9, 2019) and revealed that he will rematch Ruiz on December 7 from Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Check out the official announcement below.

“Neutral grounds – LETS GO – Dec 7th, time to be 2X – 258MGT”

There was a lot of back-and-forth between the two sides regarding where the fight would take place. Ruiz seemed concerned with going to the United Kingdom, suggesting the judging might be in favor of Joshua. In turn, Joshua likely wouldn’t have wanted the fight to take place in the United States or Mexico for the same reason.

As Joshua mentioned in his post above, the fight will take place on neutral ground in Saudi Arabia. The pair initially met back in June where Joshua put his unified heavyweight title up for grabs against Ruiz, who was a last-second replacement opponent for Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller, who was pulled after failing several drug tests.

Ruiz shocked the boxing world by handing Joshua the first loss of his professional career, putting him away in the seventh round. It will be interesting to see how things go a second time around.

Andy Ruiz Jr. is extremely confident he can get the job done in a second go around with Anthony Joshua. Even if the rest of the heavyweight division isn’t giving him the respect he deserves.

After his return to California with his newly-won IBF, WBA, and WBO heavyweight titles, Ruiz Jr. addressed his pending rematch with the English star. The first-ever Mexican-American heavyweight champion in boxing history believes his fight with Joshua will play out the same, going as far as saying that Joshua isn’t good at boxing (via BBC Sports):

“The rematch is going to be the same. I am going to be more prepared and more ready,” Ruiz said. “I know his flaws. I can do a lot better. The only thing that he can do is just run around, he’s not good at boxing.”

Earlier this month (Sat. June 1, 2019) Ruiz shocked the boxing world when he finished Joshua in the seventh round of their Madison Square Garden meeting. Ruiz jumped in against Joshua on short-notice after initial opponent Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller pulled out due to several failed drug tests.

Following the defeat, it was announced that the rematch clause in the contract was triggered. Ruiz and Joshua will likely meet again in the next several months, with a location yet to be determined. While England would be the favorable location for Joshua, New York has also been discussed as a possibility:

“People thought I wasn’t going to do anything, I was too big, too overweight,” Ruiz said. “I don’t want to say all the things I am going to change. There is going to be a lot of changing, I am going to come at a better weight this time. It’s going to be a hell of a fight.”
