Anthony Pettis shares an update on CM Punk’s MMA training at Roufusport. The former UFC lightweight champion also trains at the gym.

Punk lost in his MMA debut against Mickey Gall at UFC 203 in September of 2016 by first round submission. His second fight took place the UFC 225 event in Chicago, Illinois. It saw fellow welterweight Mike Jackson beat Punk, real name Phil Brooks, by unanimous decision.

Punk has joined the announce team for Cage Fury Fighting Championships to commentate future events. Now, has joined veteran play-by-play broadcaster Mike Gill and Brian Palakow on the broadcast team.

Pettis, who is fresh off a win over Stephen Thompson by second-round KO in the headliner of UFC Nashville, gave the update during an interview with TMZ Sports.

“CM Punk is still there [at Roufusport]. He’s doing more of the jiu jitsu, the rolling. The time that he should have spent getting ready to fight is what he’s doing now, Pettis said (H/T to BJPenn.com). They put a lot of pressure on him. They made him come over with no experience and fight on the biggest stage.

I don’t know anybody that could do that. Not even some young kids. He is still training. I don’t know what his plan is. I know he’s doing some movies and a couple other things, but I don’t know if he plans on fighting again or what. He’s still training. He’s in the gym. That dude’s a hard worker.”

Dana White: Anthony Pettis Did What Tyron Woodley ‘Couldn’t Do Twice’

UFC President Dana White was so impressed with Anthony “Showtime” Pettis’ knockout of Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson that he made an interesting point.

Pettis looked great in his welterweight debut. He took his licks in round one and most of round two. However, with just five ticks left in the second frame, Pettis landed a Superman punch on the chin of “Wonderboy”. The win adds to the mess that is the 170-pound division.

Here’s what White had to say about his newest welterweight contender’s amazing performance (via MMAFighting):

“Pettis was a +385 underdog, huge underdog. I loved his gameplan from the beginning,” White said on the ESPN+ post-fight show. “I’m assuming — I don’t know this — (coach) Duke Roufus studied ‘Wonderboy’ and the way that he jumps with his karate movement, it’s hard to block leg kicks, so he started busting up the legs early, both legs, on the outside, on the inside, to try to slow him down so he could punch with him.

“Think about this,” White continued, “Anthony Pettis, who was 155 and moved up to 170, was able to do what (Tyron) Woodley couldn’t do twice. I mean, that’s pretty impressive. And I’m not ragging on Tyron, which is going to be the thing that comes out of this, but what Pettis did tonight is unbelievable against a bigger [opponent]. Look at the size difference with these two tonight.”

Conor & Dana’s Praise

Pettis’ name began to trend on Twitter right after he cashed in as a large underdog. His highlight-reel KO was met with praise from former foe Rafael dos Anjos who tweeted that a rematch might be in order later in the year. But when Conor McGregor welcomes you into an elite MMA club, you’ve really made it.

As far as who “Showtime” will share the Octagon with next, well, it looks like he has some options.

“Listen, I like any match-up for him after what he did tonight,” White said. “Very impressive. A very impressive gameplan. He came in, he executed. ‘Wonderboy’ was busting him up in the first round, the second round. He kept his composure, stuck to [what] I’m assuming was the gameplan — I don’t know that — but he looked damn good tonight.”

Stephen Thompson addresses his latest defeat inside of the Octagon to one former UFC champion.

Ex-UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis scored a second round knockout over the title contender in the headliner of UFC Nashville. This event went down on Saturday night (March 24, 2019) at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee on ESPN+.

Following this fight, Thompson had to be sent to a hospital, but that didn’t stop him from getting on social media to talk about the fight. He went live on his official Facebook page to give his reaction to the devastating finish.

“After 80 fights I’ve never been KO’d – this time by a small guy,” Thompson said (H/T to MMAJunkie). “I can’t believe he got me with the Superman punch. Golly. Superman off the cage. It was so ninja I didn’t even see it coming.”

“I was piecing him up with the jab,” Thompson said. “I was trying to break his arms with the roundhouse kick. I guess the side kicks, I switched over too much. His punches were slow. The heck? I don’t remember anything. Next thing I knew I was in the back wondering what happened.”

Thompson would add in this video that he hopes to headline the UFC’s debut in his home state of South Carolina this June. That could not happen depending on how long of a medical suspension he gets.
