Anthony Smith is a big fan of the newly popular slap fighting and Power Slap League

Anthony Smith, a former title challenger, UFC analyst, and the no. 5 ranked UFC light-heavyweight contender recently went onto the MMA Hour and discussed his love for the sport:

“I’ve never been roasted more than my love for slap fighting. Before the slap league became a thing, I was already behind internet pay-per-views. If you dig deep enough in the inter webs, you’ll see fliers for underground slap-fighting leagues with a guest appearance from Anthony Smith. This was a thing my friends and I did before slap-fighting was even a thing. There were guys signed to Power Slap that I already knew.

“I’d do the pilot for free, I’d do the whole season for free.”

Smith then gives the name of his slap fighting goat:

“It’s a heavyweight that’s signed with a league in Missouri. I don’t remember his name, but he’s definitely in that league in Missouri. (Hunter Campbell) tried to sign him, but they’re in contracts.”

Anthony Smith, following his most recent cancelled bout against new UFC light-heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill, will next step into the cage to face fellow finisher Johnny Walker at UFC Fight Night 224 on May 13, 2023.

‘Lionheart’ most recently lost to Magomed Ankalaev back at UFC 277, and is looking to get back to his winning ways with a victory this May.

A lot of fight fans felt that if Khalil Rountree was going to have success at UFC 307, it would need to come early.

Alex Pereira is so efficient and effective at setting traps that the fight was always going to get tougher for him in the later rounds and this ended up being the case.

Perhaps what many didn’t expect is how competitive the first few rounds would be before Rountree’s gas tank and the damage he was taking started to catch up to him.

As a former opponent of Rountree’s, Anthony Smith was able to take a lot away from watching this fight play out this past weekend in Salt Lake City.

Anthony Smith Says That Watching Khalil Rountree At UFC 307 Made Him More Positive

Though he has recently buried the hatchet with Pereira over their previous feud, Smith still took a lot of enjoyment after seeing how well Rountree did against “Poatan”.

The challenger’s last victory before he fought for the title was against “Lionheart” where he viciously stopped him in the third round.

Smith was happy that his performance against Rountree clearly wasn’t a one-off after seeing how well he did against Pereira who is a whole different level in the striking.

“To be very honest, there was a lot of me those first two rounds that felt really good watching Khalil, like f***, at least it ain’t just me.

“I was like oh thank God. It would have really hurt my heart if Pereira had went out there and just dusted Khalil in like a round but watching him have some real serious success and land big on, you know how it is as a fighter. You kind of sit back and go, ‘S*** he didn’t land on me like that till the third round’. It was cool and it made he happy for Khalil.”

Anthony Smith UFC Weight Classes

UFC light heavyweight contender and one-time title challenger, Anthony Smith has called for the promotion and the sport as a whole, to abandon the current 265lbs cap on the heavyweight limit a fighter can weigh-in, claiming the sport is likely missing out on athletes whom resemble “NFL linemen”.

Smith, a one-time title challenger at the light heavyweight limit, challenged former two-weight champion, Jon Jones for undisputed gold back in March 2019, suffering a unanimous decision loss to the Rochester native.

Last time out, Nebraska native, Smith met with one-time title chaser, Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 277 back in July, suffering an ankle injury en route to a second round ground strikes TKO loss.

Seeing a headliner against recently minted undisputed champion, Jamahal Hill fall to the wayside recently, Smith has since been booked in a main event clash against Brazilian finisher, Johnny Walker – who has notched consecutive triumphs over Ion Cutelaba, and back at UFC 283, Paul Craig.

Anthony Smith calls for the heavyweight cap to be abolished

Sharing his thoughts on the heavyweight weight cap which sees fighters over 265lbs ineligible to compete, Smith believes the cap should be removed entirely – allowing for larger athletes to compete in the sport.

“I’d like to see a couple new weight divisions,” Anthony Smith said on the Believe You Me podcast with former UFC middleweight champion, Michael Bisping. “I wouldn’t be so stuck on 160/165 (super lightweight), but if you were to do like a 165, 175, 185, 195 – I’d like to see a couple new weight divisions. But if I had to just pick one, I’d love to see no weight cap at heavyweight.”

“I think there’s a lot of them (super heavyweight fighters),” Anthony Smith explained. “I think that we miss out on a lot of athletic, huge, really, really good guys by capping it at 265. Think about this, NFL lineman, there’s a lot of them guys that are 6’8’, 6’9’, 300lbs. And move well and are super athletic and fast and those guys just can’t make 265lbs. I think we cut out a pretty big chunk of guys that would be really crazy, large heavyweights.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

With his July loss to Ankalaev, Smith saw a three-fight winning streak against Ryan Spann, Jimmy Crute, and Devin Clark come to an end.
