Rising UFC lightweights Mateusz Gamrot and Arman Tsarukyan share the same ambitions heading into their main event tonight.

In an exciting all-European headline matchup built for the hardcore fans, #11-ranked Tsarukyan and #12-ranked Gamrot will collide at UFC Vegas 57 in what be both men’s main-event debuts.

Given their apparent struggle to secure opponents, they’ve turned to each other to solve those issues, something that fans will no doubt be thankful for should they deliver the thriller that many are expecting.

The pair enter the Las Vegas-held event in impressive form. While Tsarukyan has won five straight since a debut loss to Islam Makhachev, Gamrot has had a similarly-impressive resurgence following an unsuccessful arrival in the Octagon, emerging victorious in three consecutive outings since a narrow decision defeat to Guram Kutateladze.

With both men’s active streaks, as well as the confidence in their ability to compete with the best at 155 pounds, they’re anticipating lofty rank rises courtesy of a victory later tonight.

During his appearance at UFC Vegas 57 media day on Wednesday, the Polish lightweight suggested that whoever has their hand raised should find themselves opposite a top-five opponent next time out.

“Doesn’t matter who wins on Saturday night, I think the winner deserves top five next,” said Gamrot.

That sentiment was echoed by Tsarukyan during his own pre-fight interaction with the media. The Russian-Armenian, who believes his victory over Joel Álvarez earlier this year should have netted him a top-10 spot, is expecting a sizable jump up the lightweight ladder with a finish, perhaps even into the divisional top five.

“After this fight, I should be in top five, probably number six, number five. You guys gotta help me after this fight, talk about me a lot,” said Tsarukyan. “I beat Joel Álvarez but my rank didn’t go very high. But I thought like, Álvarez, he’s good fighter. I beat (him) very easy. I thought I’d get like, number seven, six.

“I hope after this fight, I got to be in top five, you know? Because Gamrot, he is good fighter. I will stop him and I will get in top five,” added Tsarukyan. “After this fight, I want to be a contender and I want to get fight from top-five guys.”

While neither man has perhaps established themselves into a mainstream name in the UFC as of yet, the chance to do so on the main-event stage tonight will no doubt aid their desires to secure high-ranked opposition moving forward.

Who do you think will have their hand raised in the UFC Vegas 57 headliner, Mateusz Gamrot or Arman Tsarukyan?

Tsarukyan Explains Why He’s The Best Lightweight, Not Makhachev

Rising UFC lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan believes he has every attribute needed to sit above Islam Makhachev as the promotion’s best 155lber. Rising UFC lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan believes he has every attribute needed to sit above Islam Makhachev as the promotion’s best 155lber.

While Charles Oliveira most recently sat on the throne and was only unseated by a weight-miss prior to UFC 274, many have named surging contender Makhachev as the best fighter in the division, including the Dagestani’s mentor and former dominant champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The sentiment is shared by the man himself, who’s made it clear that he’s willing to “smash” any and all opposition on his way to the top, where he believes he is destined to make his way to.

But while Makhachev could well have the opportunity to ascend the lightweight mountain next time out, one man outside the top 10 believes his skills inside the Octagon are ahead of the #4-ranked contender’s.

Tsarukyan, who sits at #11 on the lightweight ladder, has been making a splash in his recent fights. After finishing Christos Giagos last September, the Russian-Armenian firmly established his name as a potential future champion when he battered Joel Álvarez on the main card of UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Green earlier this year.

The only blemish on Tsarukyan’s 5-1 UFC record? A debut loss to Makhachev.

But despite falling to the Dagestani on the scorecards back in 2019, Tsarukyan believes his game has developed leaps and bounds since, even to the point where he’s confident in staking his claim as the UFC’s best lightweight.

“I feel I am the best in this division. I’m the youngest fighter, I’m in top 15,” Tsarukyan noted during an interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto. “Yeah, we have big names in this division, but for me, it doesn’t matter. I know I can beat everybody there, like (Dustin) Poirier or (Justin) Gaethje or Conor (McGregor).”

While Oliveira’s resurgence and championship success has been impressive, many expect Makhachev to get the better of him when they collide, perhaps later this year for the vacant gold.

But although the AKA product’s 10-fight win streak and work with Khabib has left him at the top of many’s 155-pound order, Tsarukyan thinks he has the edge, something he’s hoping to show in a rematch with Makhachev soon enough.

“I don’t think he is the best lightweight. I know I am the best lightweight. I am the youngest and my skills is better, you know, my boxing, my striking,” suggested Tsarukyan. “I didn’t have enough experience when I fought him, I know that, for sure. It was my first fight… I know me, I train very hard and I improve my skills every day. I’m learning every day… I feel like I’m the best in the division.

“If I fight with Islam Makhachev (again), I will show you who is the best lightweight,” added Tsarukyan. “After this fight, if the UFC gives me the opportunity to fight with Islam, I will sign.”

Tsarukyan will have the chance to move closer to a second collision with Makhachev this weekend when he features in his very first UFC main event.

After a struggle to secure a higher-ranked opponent, the Russian-Armenian will meet Poland’s Mateusz Gamrot, who is ranked one place below him, in Saturday’s UFC Vegas 57 headliner.

Do you agree with Arman Tsarukyan’s comments?

UFC lightweight contenders Arman Tsarukyan and Mateusz Gamrot will battle to see who will take the next step in the division.

Tsarukyan is hoping to get a big-name opponent with a win over Gamrot. He has called out Tony Ferguson and Dan Hooker in the past but never got to fight them.

Tsarukyan is also on a five-fight win streak, and his only loss in the UFC was against Islam Makhachev at UFC St. Peterburg on Apr. 20, 2019. Ranked 11th in the lightweight division, it will be tough to deny Tsarukyan a big fight if he defeats Gamrot.

Gamrot is looking to continue his rise in the lightweight rankings with a win on Saturday. The “Gamer” came into the UFC with hype and undefeated with 17 wins. However, he lost his debut against Guram Kutateladze by split decision at UFC on ESPN+ 38 on Oct. 17, 2020.

Gamrot rebounded from his loss by winning his last three fights. An impressive win over Tsarukyan could put Gamrot in the division’s top ten.

UFC lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan doesn’t understand the approach of some of his fellow 155lb contenders.

Tsarukyan has been on a roll in the lightweight division with five straight wins. At the time of this story’s publication, Tsarukyan is the 11th-ranked UFC lightweight behind contenders such as Rafael Fiziev and Conor McGregor.

Tsarukyan once had the formerly ranked Gregor Gillespie on his radar for months after he previously claimed he accepted a fight against him back in October. However, the fight still didn’t come to fruition despite his repeated callouts of Gillespie.

During an interview with The Schmo earlier this year, Tsarukyan expressed frustrations regarding his lightweight colleagues turning him down.

“I don’t understand how fighters wanna be like, champion, like (Gregor) Gillespie or somebody else, if they just stay in the (same) rank and they don’t do nothing. Just, ‘Oh, I wanna fight once a year,’ How? If you wanna be champion, you gotta fight like, three, four times in a year. And they stop my career too. I wanna grow up very fast, I’m ready now. But it’s difficult to get fight.”

Tsarukyan most recently defeated Joel Alvarez via second-round TKO in February. He has also earned unanimous decision wins over tough lightweights such as Matt Frevola and Olivier Aubin-Mercier.

Fortunately, since making these remarks, Tsarukyan’s matchmaking frustrations came to an end when he was booked to headline UFC Vegas 57 on June 25 against Mateusz Gamrot.

Tsarukyan’s lone blemish in the UFC came against Islam Makhachev at an April 2019 UFC Fight Night event. Before signing with the UFC, he enjoyed brief albeit successful stints in smaller promotions such as Road FC and Gods of War.

As for Gillespie, he last fought against Diego Ferreira in May 2021 and earned a second-round TKO finish. It was his first fight since a knockout loss to Kevin Lee at UFC 244 in late 2019. He has since been removed from the rankings due to inactivity, a situation that Gillespie has publicly addressed.

The UFC Vegas 57 main event has been confirmed, and bouts have been added to the cards slated for London and Paris later this year.

As well as two rising lightweights being granted their first appearances in the headline spotlight, four European fighters will have the chance to compete in their home continent, two of whom will be enjoying the home-crowd backing, one at UFC London, set for July 23, and the other at UFC Paris, slated for September 3.

Arman Tsarukyan vs. Mateusz Gamrot – UFC Vegas 57 Main Event (June 25)

After Arman Tsarukyan’s (18-2) made his desire to face fellow ATT-associated lightweight Mateusz Gamrot (20-1) clear following an apparent rejection from Gregor Gillespie, the bout was confirmed earlier this month for the UFC Vegas 57 event, scheduled for June 25.

Now, after some calls to grant the Russian-Armenian and the Pole their main-event debuts, the pair, and many in the MMA community, have gotten their wishes. Per Eurosport’s Marcel Dorff, the #11 and the #12-ranked 155lbers will top the UFC Vegas 57 slate next month.

With a place in the top 10 likely at stake, as well as the status of lightweight’s top rising prospect, the June 25 event looks set to bring some exciting action to the Octagon, especially with the likes of Neil Magny, Shavkat Rakhmonov, Chris Curtis, and Umar Nurmagomedov all set to make the walk.

Marc Diakiese vs. Damir Hadžovi? – UFC London (July 23)

As well as a recent announcement confirming Paddy Pimblett’s return to London on July 23, fellow Englishman and lightweight Marc Diakiese (15-5) is also set to lace the gloves for a home-crowd experience.

Having competed at The O2 under the UFC banner in both 2017 and 2019, the Congolese-born Brit is set to make the walk in England’s capital for the third time this summer. A week after UFC London in March, Diakiese dominantly bested Viacheslav Borschev at UFC Columbus. In his way of a second consecutive victory will be Damir Hadžovi? (14-6).

Like “Bonecrusher,” Hadzovic also recently rebounded from a two-fight losing skid. The 35-year-old outpointed Yancy Medeiros last June. After a lengthy layoff, “The Bosnian Bomber” will look to remind fans of his presence by spoiling Diakiese’s homecoming.

The bout was first reported by Chisanga Malata.

Cláudio Silva vs. Nicolas Dalby – UFC London (July 23)

In the 11th contest added to July 23’s UFC London card, Denmark’s Nicolas Dalby (19-4-1) will compete in Europe for the first time since emerging victorious over Alex Oliveira in his country’s capital back in 2019.

Per Combate’s Raphael Marinho, “Lokomotivo” will collide with Brazil’s Cláudio Silva (14-3). in a welterweight contest. When the pair share the Octagon, both men will be hoping to rebound from defeats last time out.

While the 37-year-old Dalby had a seven-fight unbeaten streak, which included a defeat to Jesse Ronson that was overturned to a no contest, snapped at the hands of Tim Means last June, the 39-year-old Silva fell to a two-fight skid a month prior against Court McGee, having previously been outpointed by James Krause in 2020.

Silva was initially slated to face Gunnar Nelson at UFC London earlier this year. Having fallen off that card through injury, the Brazilian will get his second chance at making the walk in The O2 on July 23.

Manon Fiorot vs. Katlyn Chookagian – UFC Paris (September 3)

Despite the UFC’s French debut only recently being confirmed, the first Paris card is beginning to take shape.

As well as a matchup between hometown heavyweight Ciryl Gane and fellow top-five contender Tai Tuivasa touted to headline the event, elite middleweights Robert Whittaker and Marvin Vettori have both appeared to confirm that their re-arranged clash will take place in one of Europe’s most iconic capital cities.

Now, a crucial fight in the women’s flyweight division has been added to the card. According to BoxeMag.com, #1-ranked 125lber and former title challenger Katlyn Chookagian (18-4) will enter enemy territory to take on rising contender Manon Fiorot (9-1).

Fiorot, who hails from Nice, France, has amassed an unblemished 4-0 UFC record since debuting in the promotion last January. At UFC Columbus earlier this year, “The Beast” rose to #6 in the division by outpointing Jennifer Maia.

As well as hoping to add the first defeat to Fiorot’s record since the Frenchwoman’s debut loss to Bellator’s Leah McCourt in 2018, Chookagian will be looking to further cement her status as the top flyweight contender and secure a second crack at having the divisional gold wrapped around her waist.

On September 3, it’ll be “The Beast” versus “Blonde Fighter,” one of whom could well book a date with Valentina Shevchenko with an impressive display in Paris.

Felice Herrig vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz – UFC Vegas 56 (June 4)

In our only rematch on this list, UFC mainstays Felice Herrig and Karolina Kowalkiewicz will face off in a rematch of their 2018 encounter that saw the Pole top the American as first reported by Marcel Dorff. As it happens, this would be the last time Kowalkiewicz has had her hand raised in the UFC to date.

The former title challenger is currently on a five-fight losing streak. Most recently, she lost to Jessica Penne via armbar submission at UFC 265 last August. Kowalkiewicz has also lost 7 of her last 9 fights. All things considered, another loss could very well spell the end of her seven-year run in the promotion.

Felice Herrig is also suffering the worst skid of her professional career after having lost three consecutive fights. Like Kowalkiewicz, Herrig’s most recent defeat came via armbar submission. In Herrig’s case, the loss was against submission expert Virna Jandiroba.

On Saturday, both of these women will walk into the Octagon prepared to fight for their UFC careers. And after walking out, one of them may very well not return.

Who do you envision having their hands raised in these UFC matchups?
