A HawaiiNewsNow report published yesterday filled in a few more details about BJ Penn‘s alleged assault of a friend in Maui over the weekend. As the story goes, Penn and Kuuipo Mokiao were drinking together at a bar called Kauhale’s in Kihei on Saturday night, when Penn began picking a fight with people inside. Mokiao told investigators that he pushed Penn to stop him, and Penn responded by challenging Mokiao to a fight.
Mokiao apparently agreed to go outside with Penn, which means he has bigger balls than we do. But the altercation quickly turned violent once they headed into the parking lot, as Penn suddenly punched Mokiao in the face, then kneed him in the forehead while he was defending himself. He had suffered a minor cut to his right eye, according to sources. Penn was arrested for second-degree assault and then released pending the police investigation.”
Could Mokiao simply have gotten the worst of a consensual (though drunken) bar fight? Let he who has never beat his friend’s ass in a bar parking lot cast the first stone, am I right?
Penn has yet to make a public statement about the incident. We’ll let you know if that changes.

In the wake of yesterday’s initial report about Josh Grispi‘s pair of arrests for assaulting his wife Kaitlyn — including the already-infamous detail about Grispi training his pitbull to attack her — WickedLocal has released an updated report about the situation, which paints the UFC/WEC veteran as a stone-cold sociopath. This is how it all went down, in chronological order…
– On Friday, Kaitlyn Grispi sent her mother Karen Fava a photo of herself with multiple bruises on her face and bleeding lips, taken after Josh had allegedly beaten her the day before. Fava showed the photo to the Middleboro Police Department, and officers visited the Grispis’ home that day to speak with Kaitlyn, who agreed to get an emergency restraining order against her husband and temporarily give custody of their two children to Fava.
– Grispi was then arrested for assault and battery, as well as multiple counts of improperly storing firearms near minors. “Inside the house police found handguns, rifles, an assault rifle and ammunition all belonging to Joshua. Most of the guns were unsecured and some were sitting in boxes inside their bedroom, police said. Next to their bed was a playpen with their 1-year-old daughter inside.”
– On Monday, Grispi posted $2,000 bail after his arraignment, and returned to his home. We’ll let WickedLocal take it from here:

Things deteriorated quickly as Joshua began to yell at Kaitlyn about a pile of wood he had been looking for.
“Kaitlyn said she ran down the street and hid under a bush and Joshua found her. Joshua then began punching her in the head and forced her into the home,” court documents show. “Joshua got her inside the house and kept punching and kicking her over and over. Joshua was yelling at her, ‘You want me to (expletive) kill you?’”

She ran into a bathroom, and Joshua sent the dog after her before she managed to get out of the bathroom and run out of the house to her neighbor’s home, police said.
Police responded and arrested Joshua again Monday night. Another search of the house found more ammunition, 20 marijuana plants, 15 grams of cocaine and two teacup pot-belly pigs being kept as pets in the basement.
The dog and pigs have been put in the custody of animal control.
Kaitlyn told police her husband had been abusive to her for the past two years in their three-year marriage.
“She had been afraid to come forward because she has been threatened that he would kill her and her family,” court records show.
– Kaitlyn Grispi suffered bite marks on her legs during the dog attack, as well as bruises and scratches all over her body. And then there’s this: “Joshua would often choke the dog unconscious after the attacks, court records show.”
– Kaitlyn also has proof of the death threats that Josh had made against her. Court records reveal text messages that Josh sent to his wife over the last week:
“UR (expletive) dead and if u even try n bring my kids into it the worse it will b for u and if u try and make a seen (sic) I’ll choke u unconscious and smash ur throat and if u get worse n run around after I’m goin to let Buddy have at u and I’ll walk out of the room.”
“Don’t cure (sic) you whore, That’s all u think abor (sic) ur a (expletive) scum bag piece of (expletive) who I’m goin enjoy choking to death.”
“U better not b bluffing about cops cuz I don’t joke ur dead when I see u… Literally. I don’t care I’m going to beat u n throw u to buddy, Ur dead.”
Grispi is currently being held without bail (thank God), and will be due back in court October 3rd.
Of all the harrowing falls from grace in MMA history, Grispi’s story might be the worst of all time. In October 2010 he was set to face Jose Aldo at UFC 125 in the UFC’s first-ever featherweight title fight, following an incredible stint in the WEC. A month later, Aldo pulled out of the fight due to injury, and Grispi stayed on the UFC 125 card against Dustin Poirier. Grispi lost the fight by unanimous decision, and his title hopes went up in smoke.
Grispi would go on to lose three more consecutive UFC fights against George Roop, Rani Yahya, and Andy Ogle, and was released by the UFC in February 2013. But now, instead of being a footnote in MMA history, Josh Grispi will be best known for siccing his dog on his wife and then choking the dog. What the hell is wrong with people.

Here’s what Gracie himself told MMAFighting.com via text message on Tuesday afternoon, after the MMA pioneer was booked for misdemeanor assault with intent to cause injury, then released on $10,000 bail:
“Everything is a misunderstanding. We always had a great relationship with that amazing club and all their employees. Soon everything will be clear.”
Alright, fine. Maybe this is just one of those things that happens late at night when you mix alcohol and testosterone. Maybe Renzo and Igor Gracie showed up to the club and the bouncer was wearing a “LUTA LIVRE IS THE STRONGEST” t-shirt, and one thing led to another. A comment was taken the wrong way. The bouncer failed to recognize who these Gracies were, bro. Maybe.
However, the bouncer himself — 35-year-old Craig Molesphini — has a very different story, and it suggests that the attack was premeditated. Here’s what Molesphini told the New York Post:

He was on top of me for 20 seconds, trying to punch me, but I wrapped both my arms around his neck so he couldn’t hit me, before somebody pulled him off.”
He added of the brawl, “All of the seven men were fighting, doing MMA moves on the guards, some of whom were injured. When the police arrived, they tried to get away, but the cops parked in front of their van, which was waiting with a driver.”
He said the attack was “retribution for me not allowing two of their masters into the venue last week. This was a carefully planned and coordinated attack. The police arrested all seven of them.”
Molesphini reportedly suffered a fractured elbow and shoulder. His lawyer Salvatore Strazzullo said they were cooperating with the district attorney, and could also file a civil assault claim.
Misunderstanding or not, this could turn into a very expensive mistake for Renzo. We’ll keep you posted…

-Two days ago, police were again called to the Silva residence by Thaysa when she arrived home to find her ex-husband inside, which violated the terms of the temporary injunction for protection she had filed against Silva. Thiago eventually left without incident (after initially refusing), but later texted Thaysa that he was “gonna f–k you up and you are going to die. I am going to hire someone to kill you and I am gonna move my girlfriend in.”

-Yesterday evening, Silva arrived at the Pablo Popovitch Mixed Martial Arts Academy, visibly intoxicated. Popovitch has been involved in a romantic relationship with Thaysa that is partially responsible for setting Silva off in the first place. After honking the horn until Thaysa exited the gym, Silva pointed a glock at his ex-wife’s face and stated, “You have ten seconds to bring Pablo outside and if he does not come out, I will go in the gym and start shooting everyone.”
Once Popovitch exited the gym, Silva continued to make death threats with the gun pointed at Thaysa, prompting Popovitch to call the police.
-Police officers arrived at Silva’s house shortly thereafter. In turn, Silva “faced the deputies and gave them the middle finger then proceeded inside his residence.” A SWAT team was subsequently sent in and managed to subdue Silva with a taser before taking him into custody.
-The state was pursuing an attempted murder charge for the January 30th incident, but Silva’s previously clean record, in addition the lien currently being placed on him by the IRS for unpaid taxes, led Judge John Hurley to throw out the charge. However, Hurley did recognize that Silva was a potential flight risk and threat to the community, and forced him to surrender his passport before withholding his bond.
Oh yeah, and Dana White told TMZ and Yahoo Sports that Silva “will never fight in the UFC again.” Glad we could get that out of the way.
If only this was the most insane thing that will happen in Florida today. We will keep you updated on Silva’s case as information is made available.
