UFC Fighter Thiago Silva Arrested on Multiple Charges Following Altercation at MMA School, Armed Standoff With Police [UPDATED]

UFC light-heavyweight veteran Thiago Silva was arrested last night at his home in Oakland Park, Florida, after an armed standoff with police. The incident began around 7:45 p.m. ET, when Silva allegedly stormed into the Pablo Popovitch Mixed Martial Arts Academy while carrying a gun, made “unspecified threats,” then left and barricaded himself inside his home. Broward County police — including a SWAT team — surrounded his residence, and Silva eventually surrendered at about 11:15 p.m.

Early this morning, Silva was booked into Broward County’s maximum-security Main Jail facility on four charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest/obstruction. That’s pretty much all we know right now. Though there were a lot of reports flying around twitter last night regarding Silva’s motives and the weapon he was carrying, none of those details have been officially confirmed as of yet.

Currently riding a two-fight win streak, Silva was scheduled to fight Ovince St. Preux at UFC 171 (March 15th, Dallas). It’s unclear if that fight will still take place. The UFC released the following brief, non-committal statement last night:

This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva. We are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time.

We’ll update you when we know more.

UPDATE #1: After the jump, a video of Silva being taken into custody, flipping off cameras, and telling cops that his wife wanted his money.

Rory Markham’s Latest Domestic Battery Arrest Produces Depressing New Mugshot

(Mugshot via cookcountysheriff.org. Thanks to CP reader Tim C. for the tip.)

In retrospect, Rory Markham deserved at least an honorable mention in our “Furthest Falls From Grace” Roundtable column. Once a promising welterweight slugger who earned knockout wins against Mike Pyle and Pat Healy during his six-and-a-half year MMA career, Markham has spent the last 12 months being arrested over and over again for assault in Iowa and Illinois. And now, just in time for the holiday season, Markham has gone and beaten up another civilian, adding another entry to his Depressing Mugshot Pictorial.

The above booking photo came from Rory’s latest arrest on Saturday, November 2nd, for “domestic battery/bodily harm, which is a Class 4 felony if the defendant has any prior convictions for similar offenses. We have no other details about the charges at this time. Markham is being held at the Cook County Jail with a bail amount of $250,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.

Yes, the guy who was once responsible for one of the cleanest head-kick KO’s in UFC history is now just another scabby meth-head-looking dude in county blues. So…how was your weekend?

What the Hell Has Happened to Rory Markham?: A Depressing Mugshot Pictorial

(Don’t worry. It gets much, much worse.)

Props to UG user YousHerName (the whimsy!), for unearthing the latest evidence in the downward spiral of Rory Markham. You might not have heard, but the former UFC welterweight and owner of one of the nastiest walk-off KO’s of all time was arrested back in April on felony assault charges. Turns out, the 31 year-old has seen more than his fair share of legal troubles over the years, one of which resulted in the mugshot above. In it, Markham best resembles what I would imagine Floyd from True Romance would look like if he started eating meth-filled donuts in 1993 and never stopped.

Sadly, after seeing Markham’s latest mugshot, it looks like the glorious, sun-soaked days of Surfer Dave up there (also, here) have come and gone…

(“Let me guess, star QB of your high school football team?”)

Compare this with Rory’s UFC profile picture.

Though not officially listed as “retired,” Markham has not competed in MMA since being released from the UFC following his first round TKO loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 111. While we knew that competing at 170 pounds nearly killed him on multiple occasions, it sure seemed to fit his frame a little better than the 200+ he’s sporting nowadays.

Theory: Rory Markham has appeared and/or done stunts in 4 different “Hollywood” movies: The Death and Life of Bobby Z (see instead, The Story of Ricky), The Experiment (saw it, suuuucked), Setup (BRUCE WILLY IS MY SHIT!) and Alex Cross (otherwise known as the Tyler Perry vehicle that our buddies at Filmdrunk said, “Makes Taken 2 look like Taken.”). The Experiment starred Adrien Brody, who was once rumored to be receiving a major role alongside Val Kilmer in the long-delayed Dracula film The Last Voyage of Demeter. You see the connection, right? At some point, Markham was introduced Kilmer’s dietitian, and brother, that is not a decision you can just back out on. You turn in your treadmill and dumbbells on Day 1 and he makes you a straight-to-DVD star. That’s the deal.

Photo of the Day: Arianny Celeste’s Mugshot, You Guys [UPDATED w/ Arrest Details]

(Props: TMZ via MMA Mania)

Look, nobody looks good in a mugshot. But after spending all night partying, allegedly getting physical with an unnamed victim her boyfriend Praveen Chandra, then getting arrested, I’m actually surprised that Arianny Celeste looks as good as she does. It could have been a lot worse, is what I’m saying.

At long last, here’s Arianny Celeste’s mugshot from her domestic violence booking on Saturday morning. The UFC ring girl was released on $3,000 bail after about 12 hours in custody, got in a power-nap sometime during the day, and still showed up for the UFC 146 main card looking pretty damn presentable. And that’s why she’s had a steady job carrying round cards around the Octagon for over five years — other professional hot chicks simply cannot hang at that level.

UPDATE: The Las Vegas Sun has details of the incident that led to Celeste’s arrest. Read on after the jump. You will not be disappointed…

A heated argument early Saturday morning in a Wynn hotel room led to the arrest of UFC Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste and her boyfriend, Metro Police said.

Celeste, 26, whose real name is Arianny Lopez, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Praveen Chandra, each were arrested on a count of battery domestic violence, according to arrest reports released Tuesday.

A Wynn employee heard a crashing sound from a room and saw Lopez come running out of the room shortly after 4:30 a.m., the reports state.

Lopez told police her boyfriend choked her and grabbed her right arm during an argument about text messages, the reports said. Officers noted that Lopez had scratches on her right arm.

Detectives interviewed Chandra who said Lopez kicked him in the nose in a limousine, where the argument started, the reports said.

The argument escalated in the hotel room, at which point Chandra accused Lopez of throwing two vases at him, police said.

Chandra recorded parts of the argument on his cell phone, which showed him following Lopez around the hotel room and demanding to know why she kicked him in the nose, the reports said. Officers noted injuries to Chandra’s nose and scratches to his chest and arm.

“Chandra also continued to laugh at Lopez every time she said how she felt about him,” according to the arrest reports.

Chandra denied ever touching Lopez during the argument and told police he didn’t know how Lopez received cuts on her arms.

Police arrested both Lopez and Chandra and transported them to the Clark County Detention Center. A hearing for the two in Las Vegas Justice Court is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Friday.

The two have been dating for seven months, according to the arrest reports.
