WSOF 3 Interview: Jacob Volkmann Talks Fighter Unions, ‘Fancy Pants’, And Why He’s Done Trashing Obama

In case you haven’t heard, Jacob Volkmann is a disgruntled former employee of the UFC who is preparing to start a new chapter in his career when he faces Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm at World Series of Fighting 3 this Friday, June 14th, in Las Vegas. Of course, being a disgruntled ex-UFC fighter doesn’t make Volkmann unique, as everyone from former champions and title contenders like Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Jon Fitch to lower-tier fighters like John Cholish have been airing their dirty laundry recently.

Volkmann was recently cut after a loss to Bobby Green at UFC 156 back in February despite having a 6-2 record in the Octagon as a lightweight, after starting his UFC career with an 0-2 run at welterweight. The walking papers came as a shock to Volkmann who couldn’t understand how he could be sent on his merry way. However, Volkmann’s departure came secondary to the shocking announcement that Jon Fitch had also been released despite having had a crack at Georges St-Pierre’s welterweight title and holding a stellar 14-3-1 record in the UFC. If you ask Volkmann, he’ll tell you that it is because the UFC is looking to condition their fans into watching guys who stand and bang instead of crafty ground competitors.

“That was the biggest reason why I was released,” Volkmann says of his fighting strategy, which often sees him bringing fighters to the canvas rather than trading punches. With only one of his UFC victories coming by way of stoppage, Volkmann has often been labeled “boring” by the type of fans who prefer their MMA fights to look like bar brawls. And though Volkmann’s success should speak for itself, he says that the UFC prefers its fans to see mindless clubbing rather than a ground game of chess. “They are making their fans like the stand up fighters. They could put more ground fighters on the card but they are dictating who watches and what is considered [exciting]. The mainstream isn’t promoting the ground game.”

Whether Volkmann’s declaration is true depends on the viewer. But what most fans don’t understand is the disparity in pay between the UFC’s top-tier fighters and the rest of the bunch. Volkmann has fought on his fair share of main cards but says that the perception that the UFC takes care of its fighters financially is completely false.

“They don’t take care of their fighters all that well,” Volkmann says, while citing that he made $50,000 last year while going 3-0. But the money isn’t the entire issue. “I’m talking about benefits. Their health care is a joke. There is no retirement. If you get injured, you don’t get paid. I’d like to see you get paid something when you are injured.”

You may have heard about Volkmann’s idea of starting a fighters’ union as well to ensure that fighters are protected. “I’d like to see a two-year contract with two fights a year minimum, where the minimum pay is $15,000 for the fight and $15,000 to win,” Volkmann explained. “At least you get paid a minimum of $30,000 a year and I think the UFC can afford to pay their fighters that.”

For him, the pay is fair considering the amount of money that he has to shell out on everything ranging from training camps to medical expenses.

“They don’t pay our training bills,” Volkmann continued. “Last year alone I spent $16,000 on medical expenses and health care premiums. I pay $1,000 to my gym per fight. Then I pay my boxing coach so that varies. I pay for my own equipment. I pay for gas and travel as well.”

Volkmann says that his new deal with World Series of Fighting doesn’t pay as well as the UFC, but that is mainly because the organization is still new. He chose to fight for WSoF rather than Bellator because WSoF offered him a fight every 4-6 months, and the opportunity to compete for their inaugural lightweight title was appealing. As for the UFC, Volkmann says that he has no plans of returning regardless of whether he puts together enough wins for the leading fight organization to give him a call. He figures that he’s said more than enough to put him in the permanent doghouse but that won’t prevent him from working his ass off to ensure that a fighters, union will exist.

“Other sports leagues have them so it is only a matter of time before there is one in the UFC,” Volkmann says. “I’m hoping it happens within my lifetime. It would be nice to see it in the next ten years. The UFC is trying hard to fight it and anybody that speaks against them or says that they want to form a union, the get rid of like Jon Fitch.”

With all the talk of the UFC and unions, the battle Volkmann has to focus on is inside of the cage against Beerbohm. After all, if he is unable to win, he may have a hard time finding a place to fight in the first place.

“I’ve been working on my standup every day and getting more confident just in case somebody has the power to stop my takedown attempts,” Volkmann says of his approach to Beerbohm. While his strength has always been in his ground game, Volkmann knows that he needs to become more well rounded if he wants to be considered an elite fighter. However, the man who now calls himself “Dr. Feelgood” believes that Beerbohm won’t have much to offer when it comes to stopping Volkmann from what he does best.

“He’s not even close to being able to stop my takedowns,” he said when asked how the fight will end up. “This is going to be a ground battle and I’m hoping to finish it. He seems to give up his back pretty easily and that’s nice for me.”

Considering that Volkmann is one of those fighters who more often than not leaves the fight in the hands of the judges, he’s keenly aware that he needs to become a finisher in order to excel in the World Series of Fighting. And aside from the standup, the other thing Volkmann says that he has worked on is keeping the Obama slander out of his post-fight interviews.

“Unless somebody brings something up about Obama, I have nothing more to say,” Volkmann says. “I have had enough of that. Besides, I stopped saying stuff because he stopped forcing foolish policies. He has been doing pretty well at doing absolutely nothing.”

And Now he’s on Administrative Leave (again): Jacob Volkmann

Props: Twitter (@JacobVolkmann)

A few days ago, we tried to warn Jacob Volkmann that it might not be in his best interest to continue to market himself as “that UFC fighter who hates Obama and got punked by the Secret Service”. It’s a stupid thing to take pride in, and we can’t help but feel that it fuels the whole “MMA fighters are stupid and violent” stereotype that many detractors carry. And frankly, Volkmann hasn’t been finishing his real fights, so it’s hard to suspend our disbelief when we hear him talk about how he’d rip the president’s arm with a Kimura.

Well, Jacob Volkmann now has some extra time to either take our advice or write better jokes, as he has been placed on administrative leave from his coaching job at White Bear Lake High School. This is the second time that the school has placed Volkmann on administrative leave for his comments about the president. The first came after his infamous comments after UFC 125, which also earned him a visit from the Secret Service.

We realize that administrative leave must be frustrating, but it’s confusing to hear Jacob Volkmann call the move “unethical”. The last time Volkmann was disciplined by White Bear Lake High School for his comments, the school explained why he was placed on leave and what was expected of Volkmann in future interviews. As Ariel Helwani reported:

We realize that administrative leave must be frustrating, but it’s confusing to hear Jacob Volkmann call the move “unethical”. The last time Volkmann was disciplined by White Bear Lake High School for his comments, the school explained why he was placed on leave and what was expected of Volkmann in future interviews. As Ariel Helwani reported

Upon his return to the high school, Volkmann was given a three-page letter explaining why he was punished. He was also forced to agree to not break four rules in the future. Those rules are as follows:

1. No disrespectful name-calling in interviews (ie. idiot, moron, etc.)

2. Can’t wear White Bear Lake HS clothes while being interviewed.

3. No interviews on school property.

4. No calls for violence against any member of the school board.

Regardless of how you feel about those rules, those are the rules that Volkmann agreed to. He clearly violated that first rule with his recent comments, and is now being punished for it. That doesn’t exactly sound unethical; it sounds like how rules work.

Jacob Volkmann is just one more example in a sport full of them that freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence. You are legally allowed to say (almost) anything that comes to mind, but this does not mean that there aren’t consequences for what you say- especially if you’ve already been warned by your boss not to say something. Hopefully Volkmann learns from this and shies away from the “threats against the president” routine in the future. It would be a shame for him to lose his job over something like this.

Quote of the Day: Jacob Volkmann on Barack Obama’s Arm – “I Would Rip It”

Jacob Volkmann is a man of many faces; he is an excellent, if somewhat frustrating grappler, a small business owner, and someone who knows how to pick a nickname. But among those faces, you will not likely see Volkmann donning “the fight finisher” or “the comedian” anytime soon. If you, like Joe Rogan and the few audience members present for his decision victory over Efrain Escudero at UFC 141, didn’t find Jacob Volkmann’s “glassectomy” bit to be all that amusing, then you weren’t alone. Lucky for us, our buddies over at MiddleEasy were able to catch up with “Christmas” recently, and allowed him to clarify his statement:

I heard that joke when I was six years old. ‘Glassectomy’ is when they cut your belly button out, put a piece of glass in there, and when you have your head up your butt so you can see where your going.

We guess that it’s just one of those “you had to be there” kind of jokes. Then again, we’re glad we weren’t there the day that one of the Volkmann clan opted to have this procedure carried out. But apparently one visit from the Secret Service was not enough to convince Volkmann that he might want to tone down the threats aimed at the leader of the free world, because when questioned on the specifics of his beef with Obama (and what he would do to him in a fight), Volkmann had the following to say:

My beef with Obama? It seems like all his decisions, he’s not really thinking them through, he’s basing his decisions, it seems like, on who is paying him the most money. They’re not really logical, they’re not good policies. Like making a home affordable plan, the health care plan he’s got, it’s like, ‘Where’d you come up with that? Were you even thinking when you wrote it?’ I would for sure take him down and submit him. I would try to make it a very painful submission though. Try and do like a Kimura or an armbar, try and rip it.

Now, far be it from us here at CP to throw our political views around, but this is getting kind of…weird. We get it Jacob, you are simply trying to expand your name brand, one which is mainly based upon a silly incident in your past. But have you heard of a mixed martial artist by the name of David “Hello Japan” Gardner, or perhaps, Yoshihiro “Kiss” Nakao? These are the ranks you are joining, Mr. Volkmann, and honestly, you seem like too nice a guy to lump in with those types, so maybe it’s time to end this charade and focus more on, you know, finishing fights.

I’ll level with you, Potato Nation; I am not an Obama fan. There, I said it. I’m not going to go into detail about my gripes with the man, mainly out of fear that the Secret Service would accidentally discover my illegal grow operation whilst paying me a visit, but suffice it to say, I agree with Volkmann to a degree. But when a public figure of any sort begins to market themselves on their political views rather than their profession, it just comes across as kind of…bleh. It’s the reason Alec Baldwin seems like he’d be a cool guy based on his TV persona, but is kind of a doucher in real life.

In either case, we’ll have a little more faith in Volkmann’s claims when he actually starts submitting fighters in the UFC.

After Layoff, Jacob Volkmann Ready for Return – and Still Has Beef With Obama

As a professional fighter, Jacob Volkmann will likely have many stories to tell his grandkids. But none will be stranger than the one about his visit from the Secret Service.

The story is now well known – it got a mention from Jay Leno. After his UFC 125 win, Volkmann, speaking to MMA Fighting‘s Ariel Helwani, called out President Barack Obama. On video. And the Secret Service took that seriously.

Volkmann has been on the sidelines since that fight. He finally returns Sunday against Danny Castillo – but he doesn’t believe his run-in with the Obama camp, so to speak, is the reason he’s been out of the cage.

“I think the merger with the WEC (is the reason why),” Volkmann told Helwani on Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour.” “I talked to the PR guys at the UFC and they said keep it up. At least that’s what they told me. I wasn’t trashing (Obama) – I was being an honest American.”

Volkmann was critical of Obama’s health care plans – saying that as a chiropractor, aside from being a fighter, he had a vested interest in what was happening. Volkmann, in the interview with Helwani in January, said he wanted to fight Clay Guida. Then he relented and said: “Actually, Obama. He’s not too bright. … His health care plan – someone’s gotta knock some sense into that idiot. … I’m a chiropractor, so I know the health care situation – but he’s making it worse.”

Though Volkmann won’t likely go down that road twice, should he win on Sunday in Milwaukee, he still was critical of the president on Monday when Helwani asked about his long layoff.

“Since I haven’t fought, I have less income and more debt,” Volkmann said. “What can you expect when you’re spending so much money on worthless stuff, like Obama’s salary?”

Volkmann (12-2, 3-2 UFC) has won three straight – two by split decision since starting his UFC career with a pair of losses to Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann. Against Castillo (11-3, 1-0 UFC), a UFC veteran who also rides a three-fight streak, Volkmann is expecting a stiff test.

“From what I saw, he’s a goer and will be throwing a lot of haymakers,” Volkmann said. “I don’t know if he’ll try to take me down, but who knows. I want to go to the ground with him.”

And if he wins, he said he won’t call out Obama again – but does plan to drop a name.

“I can’t really give out hints … I’m not gonna tell you who I’m calling out,” Volkmann said. “It’s not political, though. No beef. He asked me to.”

Volkmann and Castillo fight on the preliminary card of UFC on Versus 5 on Sunday at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The prelims will stream live on the UFC’s Facebook page starting at 5:45 p.m. Eastern. The four-fight main card airs live on Versus at 9 p.m. Eastern.

War Machine’s Big House Blog # 41: Steroids Are Safe, Bin Laden’s Alive and the Yakuza are Causing Natural Disasters in Asia

(Little known fact: War’s mother’s name is Game Machine.)

War Machine’s latest big house blog is up and according to the incarcerated fighter formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver, pretty much everything we think we know is a lie.

The TUF 6 vet is gearing up for his final few months behind bars in county jail, and as such, has brushing up on his current events in the news. According to the beleaguered fighter, everything that he’s read lately, from Barry Bonds’ steroid trial to Bin Laden’s alleged death  is carefully propagated government bullshit.

Check out the latest instalment of Deep Thoughts with War Machine after the jump.

May 2nd, 2011

A fucking BLOODY LIP is NOT “great bodily injury.” I can’t believe I plead guilty to a FELONY “battery with G.B.I.” and that now I’m a “convicted felon,” over that! EVERY guy I’ve met in here that took G.B.I. to trial, where the victim didn’t have broken bones or stitches, won! Why? Because what makes battery (misd.) a felony G.B.I. is broken bones or stitches!! I really got fucked because I was scared to go to trial and risk the possibility of multiple years IF I was found guilty. Not to mention that the DA threatened to charge my best friend also, if I went to trial. Fuck the time, I hate the fact that I’ll be on “formal probation” when I’m out. Hate the fact some loser, who FAILED at life, will be in charge of me and able to harass me. NO ONE says “I want to be a probation office when I grow up.” He wanted to be a cop, or something else prestigious, but he FAILED and is now an angry/vindictive babysitter of grown men.

ANYWAY! How about that Bonds perjury trial? How many millions did the gov. waste trying to bust him for the “awful crime” of lying about his steroid use? And failed!! LMAO! Dumb fucks! The prosecutors should be brought up on charges for wasting tax payers money! Pro athletes do steroids! 70% +! Proof? Look at a sport where a lot of the body is exposed – BASKETBALL. Look at the athletes muscular development in the 70′s and 80′s, now look at the avg. b-ball player’s muscle now, most are pretty jacked. Why?? Nevermind athletics, look at actors. Take a look at Will Smith’s body in “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” now look at him in “Legend.” How is it that as a young man, he was puny, and now, aging, he’s young in the face and ripped! How? Same goes for Stallone, LL Cool J, Brad Pitt, and the list goes on and on. Answer: “Testosterone therapy” (steroids) and growth hormones. And the shit isn’t dangerous either. The anti-steroid campaign is as bogus as the anti-marijuana campaign. Marijuana is illegal for one reason, hemp vs. cotton. Hemp is better, cotton is “old money,” and old money controls votes and politics = weed banned = hemp banned! Steroids gave Russian athletes huge advantages due to their understanding of them. During Cold War, that was no bueno! Solution = ban steroids “because they are dangerous.” Truth be told, no in-depth study EVER suggested steroids are dangerous, especially when used moderately. Proof = bodybuilders: they are not dropping dead in record #’s yet they ABUSE the hell out of steroids. Why? Not fucking dangerous! Rebuttal: What about Lyle Alzado? He died from a brain tumor, so have MILLIONS of other humans, how can you say growth hormones/steroids were the cause? Mere speculation and B.S. Yeah, but Arnold had to get bypass surgery on his heart from steroids. LMAO! How many other men have had the same procedure!? My father died at 39 from a heart attack and never used steroids. Arnold’s a joke of an example! Yeah but Chris Benoit killed his whole family cuz of “roid rage.” Really? Was he not also an alcoholic/addicted to oxycontin? But they had no influence on his behavior, it was the steroids right? B.S. Alcoholics and drug addicts commit horrible violent crime ALL THE TIME! Shit, some people do it sober! How can you blame the steroids! It’s all bullshit! ANYWAY, enough of my rage on B.S. government policy and “witch hunts.”

So… I’ve been working on some new workout concepts I read about in this book “The Naked Warrior.” I’m gonna give it a whirl for 2 weeks and if it doesn’t hurt my pull-up progress, I’ll continue. I hope it helps, I hope it isn’t another B.S. gimmick. Another new thing I have been doing is wearing my shirt as pants… lol It’s comfy! I got it from Jr. Seau’s brother, he used to do it at the other jail. You know Samoans wear lava lavas? So it’s kinda the same, a jail lava lava! When I go home I’m gonna buy some lava lavas to rock around the house!

Alright, so yesterday the U.S. SUPPOSEDLY killed Bin Laden. Interesting that they “buried him at sea” some 6 hours later… WTF!? Real interesting too that the DNA results came back positive in, what, 12 hrs.!? Even more interesting that the timing couldn’t have been better for Mr. Obama and the government… just a week ago he FINALLY released a copy of his birth certificate to the public after like 4 years of certain people’s hounding. Why out of the blue, did he choose then to FINALLY release it? And what better diversion for the people who suspect it to be falsified than the death of Bin Laden? Something stinks! I don’t doubt they got Bin Laden, but I do doubt they killed him. YET. There is no reason to have #1, taken the dead body #2, dumped it in the sea! And so soon? The U.S. has a precedent with the Husseins to NOT do this. Much more likely they kidnapped him and are now torturing him to get information/revenge. BTW, I don’t mind torture, I’m just making sense out of WHY they CLAIM, to have dumped his body in the ocean. I guarantee it didn’t happen as claimed. I also bet a million bucks the President chose last week to release his birth certificate, KNOWING the U.S. was gonna hit Bin Laden yesterday, to steal attention from the fact that it was a FAKE.

Weird shit is going on out there people, we don’t know shit! I just read a book “Forbidden Science” and WOW! Read it, you’ll be in disbelief! Fucking weather control weapons, developed in Cold War days, as well as PSY weapons, fucking NUTS! Unbelievable really, except that the U.N. mentions the acceptable and unacceptable use of said devices and it’s U.N. Treaties!! WTF!? Why don’t we know about this!? Lastly, it said that when the Soviet Union collapsed such weather machines were sold off. Mention is made of a sale to the Japanese Yakuza. After the recent disasters with Hurricane Katrina and tsunami/quake in Japan, you have to wonder? Maybe stock market trading, timed with devastating “natural disasters,” where a few know they’re gonna make big $$$? Possibilities = endless. Get the book and trip out on it like I am.
