Five Reasons to Watch ‘UFC Fight Night 25: Shields vs. Ellenberger’

Unless you’re one of those Bud Light ‘Battle on the Bayou’ contest winners, you’re probably not overly excited about Saturday’s “Shields vs. Ellenberger” UFC event on Spike. Boxing already has Saturday night locked up, with Floyd Mayweather‘s ring-return against 24-year-old WBC Welterweight champ Victor Ortiz, and it feels like UFC Fight Night 25 will be an overlooked prelude to next week’s Jones vs. Rampage card.

But let’s not admit defeat so soon. We’ll be liveblogging the Shields vs. Ellenberger main card on CagePotato.com starting at 9 p.m. ET, and it would be nice if a few of you showed up to keep us company. Could it be one of those “crap on paper, bonkers in reality” events? Who knows, but consider the following…

All Eyes on Jake: So far, Jake Shields‘s UFC career has consisted of an underwhelming (and razor-thin) split-decision victory over Martin Kampmann, and a rout at the hands of Georges St. Pierre. His dominant stretch of eight-straight stoppage victories in 2006-2009 are a distant memory in the minds of MMA fans, and he needs a dramatic win here, badly. Shields’s dance partner, Jake Ellenberger, has been spent years fighting for recognition, and with four straight Octagon wins over serious competition, he’s starting to get it. Stylistically, the fight might not be a barn-burner, but it could have career-altering implications for the headliners.

TUF Winners Return: Due to poorly-timed injuries, Court McGee and Jonathan Brookins — the winners of TUF 11 and TUF 12, respectively — haven’t competed since last year. Nevertheless, McGee is still a solid favorite over Dongi Yang, the South Korean fight-finisher who has split a pair of Octagon appearances, most recently TKO’ing Rob Kimmons in March. I’m much more concerned for Brookins, whose first post-TUF bout will be against Erik Koch, the Roufusport-trained killer who has won Knockout of the Night bonuses in his last two fights. My money’s on Koch here, especially considering the way Brookins was gobbling punches against Michael Johnson — and I’d also call this bout an early front-runner for Fight of the Night.

The Crowd-Pleaser: The UFC knew what they were doing in booking middleweights Alan Belcher and Jason MacDonald to kick off the main card. Both guys go for broke in every fight, and have eight combined performance bonuses to show for it. With back-to-back stoppage wins over Wilson Gouveia and Patrick Cote in his pocket, Belcher returns to the cage after the eye-ailment that nearly ended his career. And speaking of miraculous comebacks, MacDonald is coming off his first-round submission win against Ryan Jensen, which followed his gnarly leg-snap against John Salter.

Do or Die for Dunham: Once an undefeated blue-chip prospect in the lightweight division, Evan Dunham now has his back against the wall following two straight losses — one a bullshit decision against Sean Sherk, the other an ugly TKO against Melvin Guillard. His next opponent, Strikeforce/TUF 13 veteran Shamar Bailey, is a hefty underdog, but he’s got the wrestling skills and power to make it a contest. Can Dunham get his head back in the game and take care of business? Because if he doesn’t, he’ll very likely be out of a job.

Don’t Sleep On the Prelims: The entire “Shields vs. Ellenberger” preliminary card will be streamed on Facebook.com/UFC, and Dunham vs. Bailey isn’t the only match to keep an eye on. Following his Fight of the Night-worthy loss to Yves Edwards in January, Cody McKenzie — and his dreaded “McKenzietine” choke — will return against Vagner Rocha. Plus, Saturday night will kick off with the debut of Jorge Lopez, a 22-year-old welterweight who took a break from high-school at the age of 14 to train with Wanderlei Silva — which sounds a hell of a lot cooler than what I was doing at 14.

Jack Shields passed away from natural causes at the age of 67. Jack was the father and manager of son, Jake Shields. GracieFighter.com has posted on their website:

The father of Jake Shields has passed away. It was learned that he died peacefully as he slept. Jack Shields was instrumental in his son’s MMA career. He taught Jake the values of hard work and perseverance. He was always there and was a fervent supporter through Jake’s early years in wrestling and when Jake transcended to MMA.

With only three weeks left until Jake Shields headlines UFN 25 against Jake Ellenberger on September 17th for the much talked about Battle on the Bayou card, it is uncertain if Jake will still want to take the fight. So far, Jake Shields has only posted the following statement via the Gracie Fighter website: ““lost my father manager and one of my best friends today!! R.I.P jack you will be greatly missed and loved by many”

Just a few weeks ago, UFC Lightweight, Sam Stout lost his coach and brother-in-law, Shawn Tompkins to natural causes, as well. Tompkins had unexpectedly suffered a heart attack in his sleep at the age of 37. Stout was to compete against Dennis Siver at UFC 137 on October 29th, but pulled out of the fight yesterday. Many assumed it was due to the loss of Tompkins, but it appears Stout may have suffered an injury in training.

Should Shields decide to remain in his headlining bout on the UFN 25 card, it should be a very emotional night. Jack Shields was Jake’s constant supporter and never missed his son’s fights.

Shields vs. Ellenberger Slated for September’s ‘Battle on the Bayou’, UFC Conveniently Forgets ‘Five-Round Non-Title Main Event’ Rule

From this day forward, any [main event] that is signed after right now today will be a five-round fight.” — Dana White, 6/9/11

The main event for UFC Fight Night in New Orleans on September 17 has been verbally agreed to as Jake Shields takes on Jake “The Juggernaut” Ellenberger…”Ellenberger is on a mission to get his first shot at a world title, and Shields is determined to get another crack at it,” said UFC President Dana White. The televised bout is scheduled for three rounds. — UFC.com, 6/29/11

And so, the UFC’s new five-round non-title fight rule is immediately ignored. Considering that Shields’s recent bouts haven’t all been barn-burners, you have to wonder if the UFC’s decision to make this a three-rounder was some calculated hedging against a boring match. After all, nothing kills a good party like 25 minutes of stalling.

A pair of Jakes will battle on the bayou in September.

MMA Fighting was first to report Sunday a planned fall welterweight fight between former title challenger Jake Shields and surging contender Jake Ellenberger. Tuesday, UFC officials announced the fight will headline UFC Fight Night 25: Battle on the Bayou on Sept. 17 in New Orleans.

Despite some reports to the contrary, a UFC official on Tuesday told MMA Fighting that the fight will be a three-round main event, not five rounds. Earlier this month at UFC 131, UFC president Dana White announced that all main events in the UFC would be five-round fights, including non-title fights. It was not immediately clear why Shields-Ellenberger will be a three-round main event.

Shields (26-5-1, 1-1 UFC) is coming off his first loss in in six and a half years, a unanimous decision setback to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129 in April. Ellenberger (25-5, 4-1 UFC) fought on the same card, knocking out Sean Pierson in the first round for his fourth straight victory.

Fight Night 25 will be the UFC’s first trip to New Orleans in more than a decade. In April, the promotion announced a renewed sponsorship deal with Bud Light, and as part of the deal the two companies will produce an annual live event.

The first joint venture, “Battle on the Bayou,” will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and is expected to include fan expo-like events, a concert tie-in and meet-and-greets with Zuffa fighters. As with all UFC Fight Night cards, Fight Night 25’s main card will air live on Spike TV.

The UFC has held three shows in New Orleans, all prior to Zuffa’s purchase of the company in 2001. The last UFC show in Louisiana was UFC 37 in May 2002 in Bossier City, near Shreveport. Several UFC fighters hail from the New Orleans area, most notably Pat Barry, Melvin Guillard and Alan Belcher, who trains in nearby Biloxi, Miss.

Belcher is expected to fight on the card in a middleweight bout against Jason MacDonald. Also confirmed by the UFC for the card is a middleweight bout between Season 11 winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Court McGee and Dongi Yang and a featherweight bout between Season 12 TUF winner Jonathan Brookins and Erik Koch.
