Pat CurranFollowing a shoulder injury that delayed his first meeting with lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, Bellator Season Two Lightweight Tournament Champion Pat Curran (12-3) is 100% healthy and excited about finally getting the chance to fight for Bellator gold.

Curran will meet Alvarez this Saturday, April 2, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut in the headliner for Bellator 39.

Curran earned the title shot after defeating Toby Imada in the season two tournament, and had been expected to meet Alvarez in season three at Bellator 33 but was replaced by Roger Huerta after the injury. Curran is currently riding a four fight win streak, which includes three season two tournament wins.

“After this fight people are definitely going to know who I am and they’re going to change how they think about me. I’m pretty confident in every one of my submissions. If I see it, I see it, and If I don’t I have other options. It’s an honor to get a chance to fight Eddie for the lightweight title. I’ve been waiting for this a long time. It’s in my thoughts all day long. It’s in my dreams. I’m very anxious and excited.”

Bellator 38 posterThe broadcast numbers for Bellator Fighting Championships first two events of the promotions fourth season looked promising with 200,000 plus viewers on MTV2 for Bellator events 35 and 36. Numbers for the third show for the promotions fourth season, Bellator 37, dipped to 173,000 viewers.

Those numbers have dipped even more after this past weekends Bellator 38 event, bringing in a season low number of 150,000 viewers. The numbers were confirmed by MMAjunkie.com with sources close to the event.

Bellator 38 featured the opening quarterfinals for the promotions light heavyweight tournament. The event took place at Harah’s Tunica Hotel and Casino in Tunica Resorts, Miss.

Two factors that may have produced lower viewer numbers was a special start time for the Bellator event, which aired on MTV2 at 7PM EST instead of it’s traditional 8PM EST start time. The move was done to avoid direct competition with the UFC’s Seattle, Washington event, UFC Fight Night 24, which aired on Spike TV. The UFC also provided fans with five preliminary bouts through their Facebook.com/UFC page for free, which directly conflicted with the Bellator broadcast.

Picking up wins at Bellator 38, and moving into the semi-finals were Tim Carpenter, Richard Hale, D.J. Linderman, and Christian M’Pumbu.

Alvarez back flipPress Release – UNCASVILLE, CT (March 29, 2011) – Bellator Lightweight World Champion Eddie Alvarez will defend his world title this Saturday, April 2nd against Season 2 Lightweight Tournament champion Pat Curran in a highly anticipated World Championship Fight LIVE on MTV2. Former Welterweight world champion Lyman “Cyborg” Good will take on undefeated Judo Olympian Rick Hawn in a Season 4 Welterweight semifinal fight. In a Season 4 Lightweight semifinal, 2009 Submission of the Year Winner Toby Imada will face Brazilian phenom and one half of “The Pitbull Brothers”, Patricky Pitbull – who is fresh off of a stunning TKO of former World Champion Razor Rob McCullough. Additionally, hard-hitting UFC veteran Ben Saunders will make his highly anticipated return to the cage in his Bellator debut against upset-minded Matt Lee.

“This is one of the most talent-filled events we’ve ever produced – headlined by a World Title Fight featuring Eddie Alvarez, one of the top pound-for-pound fighters on the planet,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Pitbull vs. Imada and Good vs. Hawn both look like they will be spectacular fights as well. This should be an amazing night of fights”

Although Alvarez is currently riding a six fight win-streak in a 21-2 professional record and is widely considered on of the top lightweights in the sport, he says that there is more pressure than ever to win this fight.

“I need to live up to my own expectations. More than any fight in my career – in this fight with Pat Curran – I just want to completely dominate,” said Alvarez. “It has nothing to do with Pat; it’s just what I feel like I have to do regardless of who I’m fighting, in order to earn my rank of number one in the world. I won’t be happy with anything less than complete and total domination.”

Curran says that the prospect of fighting Eddie has made all the difference in preparing for the fight.

“I’ve been dreaming every night about this Bellator World Championship fight with Eddie Alvarez. I think about it in the morning, all day, when I go to bed, and in my dreams,” said Curran. “I’m coming out there to shock the world. I’m going to stand right in front of Eddie [Alvarez] and I’m going to let my hands fly. I have all the confidence in the world that I can beat Eddie Alvarez so now it’s up to me to go out there and do it.”

To which the confident defending champion replied, “If I had a quarter for every time someone said they were going to stand with me and knock me out, I wouldn’t have to fight for a living. Pat [Curran] may be saying he wants to stand in front of me, but that would be a stupid, stupid game plan. He won’t be standing in front of me for long.”
