Eddie Alvarez Fears Being Erased From The History Books

Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (21-2) is ranked near the top of the pile when it comes to the World’s 155 lb fighters, but he fails to gain that respect at times from the fans and from rival promotions because he doesn’t belong to the UFC or Strikeforce.

Eddie AlvarezBellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (21-2) is ranked near the top of the pile when it comes to the World’s 155 lb fighters, but he fails to gain that respect at times from the fans and from rival promotions because he doesn’t belong to the UFC or Strikeforce.

Alvarez will get the chance to show the world why he’s won eleven of his past twelve fights when he defends his title against Pat Curran for the first time on April 2 at Bellator 39 in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Curran might be a familiar name for mixed martial arts fans but it isn’t a one that many would ever consider as a threat to any of the worlds top lightweights, Alvarez feels otherwise. Alvarez fears what Curran could do in the cage in April, that a victory for the unfamiliar fighter will launch his name in bright lights while Alvarez’ own falls into obscurity.

“Pat poses a lot of threats. He’s young, he’s hungry. This is going to be the best condition he’s ever been. It better be. He hasn’t got the respect of the fans yet, so that fire is still burning. You’ve got to watch for guys like that. He’s talented. He has good fighting instincts. He has the ability to become a champion…When I think about it, the anxiety in me increases, and when that happens, I can’t stand still, I can’t get out of the gym. I’m up early, I’m home late. My anxiety increases because I can’t have a guy that is not well known take my name, take my spot. It sounds weird. People think you don’t have to be worried about this guy. No, on the contrary, you better be f—— worried for this guy because this is the guy who can completely erase you from the rankings and take your name in the blink of an eye and in one fight. That fire’s there. That fear is there like it’s never been against guys like this.”

To help him become the best and train for this fight, Alvarez even spends time each week training with UFC champion Frankie Edgar. Check out the entire article and Alvarez’ comments about training with Edgar at MMAFighting.com.

Joe WarrenBellator lightweight champion Joe Warren (6-1) is set to meet Ring of Combat featherweight champ Marcos “Louro” Galvao (9-3-1) in a non-title bout at an upcoming Bellator 41 event.

According to Sherdog.com, the two fighters will meet on April 16 in a catchweight fight of 137 lbs at an unannounced venue.

Warren was the Season 2 Featherweight tournament winner and went on to face, then, current champ Joe Soto for the Bellator title. Warren would end the fight at 33 seconds of the second round by knocking Soto out at Bellator 27 last September. That bout was Warrren’s last fight and was his fourth victory in a row since losing to former DREAM champ Bibiano Fernandes in October 2009.

Warren has expressed an interest in vying for a spot on the US Olympic wrestling team for the 2012 London Games.

Galvao is on a three fight win streak which includes winning the Ring of Combat featherweight title back in December of last year. It was the second title bout of his career after fighting Masakatsu Ueda to a draw for the Shooto 132 lb title in 2008. Galvao has made two apperances for the WEC losing both fights to Brian Bowles at WEC 31 and Damacio Page at WEC 39.

Strikeforce & Bellator Viewer Numbers In From The Weekend

logo2332Last weekend both Bellator Fighting Championships and Strikeforce held events on the same night with MTV2 airing Bellator 35 beginning at 9PM EST, and Showtime airing Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson beginning at 10PM EST.

Trying to compare their numbers head-to-head doesn’t make much sense, as one airs on a premium-cable station with a subscription base of approx. 18 million, and the other is a cable network station which features music-related programming aimed at a younger audience.

If one winner had to be picked though, it would have to be Bellator who saw an increase in key demographics with their debut on MTV2.

MMAjunkie.com had the viewer numbers for both events.

Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson averaged 412,000 viewers, a stark contrast to last months Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva event, which featured the first bouts of the promotions Grand Prix tournament. Of course the draw for February’s event was likely to have drawn bigger numbers, but last Saturday’s show was on par with the promotions average viewership numbers from 2010 of 426,000 per broadcast.

Bellator 35 debuted on MTV2 Saturday night drawing 200,000 for the live event, and peaking with 231,000 viewers. This is very good news for Bellator who saw huge increases in key demographics.

…ratings viewership represented an 83 percent increase in men ages 18 to 49 years old, 80 percent rise in men ages 18 to 34 years old and a whopping 133 percent increase in men ages 25 to 34 years old.

It will be interesting to see the viewer numbers for both promotions future events, with Strikeforce preparing for the next set of Heavyweight tournament bouts in June, and with Bellator featuring events almost every Saturday over the next few months as part of their fourth season.

Certainly the hype that will build up to the June Strikeforce show could provide them with their biggest viewer numbers yet, but will this past weekends success for Bellator prove consistent or will the youth who follow that MTV2 tune into something else once the novelty has worn off?
