It appears that the featherweight quarterfinal matchups for Bellator Fighting Championships upcoming fourth season are set with all eight participants appearing on the upcoming March 19, Bellator 37 card at the Lucky Star Casino in Concho, Oklahoma.
The unofficial news was first reported by Sherdog.com, who learned of the matchups from sources close to the event. They have confirmed that all four featherweight tournament bouts will air live on MTV 2.
The matchups for the quarterfinals are as follows:
Georgi “Insane” Karakhanyan (14-2-1) vs. Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (14-1)
Zac George (20-3) vs. Wilson Reis (11-2)
Eric Larkin (3-0) vs. Kenny “The Tooth Fairy” Foster (8-2)
Daniel Straus (14-3) vs. Nazareno “Naza” Malegarie (19-0)
Karakhanyan participated in the season 2 featherweight tournament and was eliminated by Joe Warren at Bellator 18. He fought again, in a non-tournament bout, against Anthony Leone at Bellator 28, winning a unanimous decision. Meanwhile his opponent Freire, made it to the season 2 final only to lose to Warren at Bellator 23, ending his undefeated streak. Freire’s three fights in the season 2 tournament were his first bouts with Bellator.
George will make his Bellator debut as a participant in the season 4 tournament and enters on a six fight win streak. He hasn’t fought in over a year-and-a-half, with his last bout in October of 2009, earning a submission win at a C3 Fights event. Reis, meanwhile, will participate in his third Bellator tournament having fought in the first and second seasons. Each time he was defeated in the semifinal rounds. His last cage appearance was at Bellator 33 in a non-tournament match, earning a split decision over Deividas Taurosevi?ius.
Larkin is a relative newcomer with one Bellator appearance last year, a fist round submission win over Marcus Andrusia at Bellator 28. All three of his professional wins were in 2010 with three different promotions. Foster also has one fight with Bellator, a unanimous decision win over Lester Caslow at Bellator 33 last October. The win put him back in the win column after a loss in June at an Extreme Fight Club event.
Straus enters the tournament on a ten fight win streak, with his last victory coming last September at the Shark Fights 13 event. He earned a unanimous decision win over Karen Darabedyan. All 17 of his professional fights occurred from 2009-2010. Malegarie is undefeated and makes his Bellator debut as Straus does. His last fight was in November of last year, earning a submission win at a Colizeu Fight Championship event.

Press Release – CHICAGO, Ill. (February 23, 2011) – Bellator Fighting Championships continues to add to its Light Heavyweight Tournament, this time adding powerful Ohio native Richard “Rare Breed” Hale to the competition that airs LIVE Saturdays on MTV2. Hale now has the opportunity at picking up a $100,000 paycheck while becoming the first Bellator World Light Heavyweight Champion.
“Richard is another guy we have had our eye on for a while, and his size and experience should enable him to make some noise this season,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.
Now fighting out of Tempe, Arizona, Hale (15-3-1) began his MMA journey in 2006 just days after being invited to a local MMA event a friend of his was competing in. Now almost five years later, the training has paid off, as the 25-year-old Hale has held Rage in the Cage Championships in three different weight classes, including Light Heavyweight, Heavyweight, and Super Heavyweight.
After giving more than 40 pounds away to opponents in the past, Hale is thrilled to enter the tournament fighting at 205, stating, “I absolutely feel like I’m more powerful and explosive at 205 pounds,” said the 6′4″ Hale. “My strength and my stamina is better, and just everything all around. With the weight cut and everything, it pushes me to be a better athlete.”
With 13 finishes in 15 victories, Hale is anxious to put his crowd pleasing style on display LIVE on MTV2 during Bellator Season 4.
“I’m looking at this tournament as an opportunity to display my skills to the world,” said Hale. “I feel like this is my opportunity to make a statement and I’m absolutely going to take advantage of it. I’m not coming to Bellator just to put on a fight; I’m coming to put on an entertaining fight. This is an entertainment sport, so my opponents have to be ready for anything.”
Hale is the fifth confirmed participant in the Light Heavyweight tournament, joining Nik “The Machete” Fekete, Chris Davis, D.J. Linderman, and Tim Carpenter.

Press Release – CHICAGO, Ill. (February 23, 2011) – World number six-ranked[1] featherweight and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Marlon Sandro will make his U.S debut under the Bellator Fighting Championships banner, officials announced today. The Sengoku, Pancrase, and Shooto veteran will not participate in the upcoming Season 4 Featherweight Tournament which airs LIVE beginning in March, but will make his debut in 2011.
“Marlon Sandro is a phenomenal talent at 145,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Our Featherweight division is absolutely stacked and Sandro pushes that talent pool to an even higher level, I’m thrilled to have him on board.”
The former Sengoku Featherweight Champion and reigning Featherweight King of Pancrase brings an extremely impressive 17-2 professional record to Bellator, which includes seven TKO or KOs and three submission victories. Recently compiling a string of devastating knockouts, Sandro’s last four victories have come via TKO or KO, – all in the first round – with a total fight time of just 3:39.
Residing and fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sandro currently trains along side UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo with Team Nova Uniao.

Bellator middleweight champ Hector Lombard (27-2-1) will meet Hawaiian native Falaniko Vitale (28-9) in a non-title bout at an upcoming Bellator 44 event.
MMAjunkie.com reported the news Tuesday morning noting that both men have made verbal agreements to meet on May 14. The event has yet to be officially announced so no venue or city has been named for the May event.
Lombard enters the fight on a 21 bout unbeaten streak having defended his Bellator middleweight title for the first time last October. He earned a unanimous decision over Russian Alexander Shlemenko, the season two middleweight tournament winner, at Bellator 34. The win was Lombard’s sixteenth in a row and sixth under Bellator having also defeated Herbert Goodman at Bellator 24, as well as Jay Silva at Bellator 16 in 2010.
This bout will mark Vitale’s Bellator debut with the promotion after a long career that has seen him fight in the UFC (1-1), Strikeforce (1-2) and most recently for the Hawaii based X-1 promotion (6-0). Vitale’s last two bouts were for X-1, using an Ezekiel choke to defeat to win both matches against Kala Hose in September and Kalib Starnes in March of last year.
