The usually boisterous Chael Sonnen was a bit tame in his Bellator 208 main event with Fedor Emelianenko. And “The Bad Guy” also displayed a more subdued side following the fight.

Sonnen didn’t make it out of the first round against Emelianenko but did have his moments, albeit briefly. Sonnen added some insight as to what he believed went wrong inside the cage during the post-fight press conference.

Where Sonnen Went Wrong

“I would call him explosive,” Sonnen told the media when asked to assess Emelianenko’s skills inside the cage. “With his punches, there wasn’t a ton of set-ups, they just came and they came hard. Even on the ground, I had some good positions on him and he would just explode. It weren’t exactly technique-based. It was impressive. He’s an impressive athlete.”

Despite being dropped in the first 60 seconds of the fight, Sonnen regained his composer. “The American Gangster” looked to be fairing well but then inexplicably dove over Emelianenko thus losing position.

“The dive roll, I was going to lose that position anyway,” said Sonnen. “I was falling over the top so I tried to tuck his chin and go. I used to do that move all of the time in college and I always got it. But I missed it tonight. I rolled right over.”

Fedor would capitalize on Sonnen’s mistake and make him pay. “The Last Emperor” went vintage Pride Fighting Championship on West Lins bad boy. Battering Sonnen with a flurry of punches forcing the referee to stop the fight.

How Hard Does Fedor Hit?

“I don’t think I’ve ever been ground-and-pounded like that,” Sonnen said. “I thought there was opportunity there, I was covering up and I thought that he was slowing down. The referee warned me — he said, ‘If you don’t move I am going to stop this.’ But I didn’t think he would because they were going into my hands. I thought I was blocking them, I thought I was having a rope-a-dope moment. I thought I was luring him in. That was a bad strategy it turns out. That was a bad plan.”

Emelianenko will move on to face Ryan Bader in the finals of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix.

As for Sonnen, his future is a little less certain. That’s not to say he doesn’t have options. If he has it his way, Sonnen would prefer a return to his more natural fighting weight of 205 pounds.

“We’ll see what happens,” said Sonnen. “If they want to do a losers ball and play this thing all the way out to third [place] then maybe we do that. But I don’t know. That’s up to (Bellator president) Scott Coker. If you ask me what weight class I’d rather be in, I’d say 205 is more appropriate.”

This weekend, superstar rapper 50 Cent made headlines by sending a $2 million offer to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The offer was supposedly an attempt to get ‘The Eagle’ to come over to Bellator MMA. The rap star recently signed a lucrative sponsorship deal with the promotion.

Interestingly enough, the exact amount 50 proffered is being withheld from him because he started the now-infamous post-fight brawl at UFC 229 last week. But 50 Cent was wrong in suggesting it was the UFC’s call to withhold his pay.

That decision was solely on the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Apparently, 50 Cent doesn’t know that at all. Bellator MMA President Scott Coker revealed at the Bellator 208 post-fight press conference last night (via MMAjunkie) that his new business partner called him to ask about Khabib’s situation. So Coker told 50 Bellator had to stay out of that situation:

“He called me yesterday and he said, ‘Hey, what’s going on with this?’ I said, ‘Well, the commission’s involved. There’s a lot of steps to that whole situation.’

“I’d like to just – I told him, ‘Hey, let’s just stay clear of it because that has nothing to do with Bellator, it has to do with the commission and the fighter and the league.’ So that’s their business.”

50’s On His Own

Indeed Bellator has no control – or involvement – in the matter, so 50 Cent’s money won’t change things in that regard whatsoever. ‘The Eagle’ seems to be at least somewhat receptive to 50 Cent’s offer. It would seem that it would take a whole lot more than $2 million to persuade him to leave the UFC, however.

But Coker wanted to clarify that 50 Cent wasn’t speaking for Bellator in any sort of negotiations. What he says are his own words. Bearing that, Coker suggested the offer may have been in a managerial capacity rather than speaking for Bellator:

“I think what he means by that is like him as a manager,” Coker said. “50 Cent, when he’s talking to an athlete, that has nothing to do with Bellator. I can’t tell 50 Cent what to say or not say, believe me.”

As expected, Khabib won’t be coming to Bellator anytime soon, and especially not on 50’s accord. That doesn’t mean that everything is all good between the UFC and Nurmagomedov.

‘The Eagle’ recently made some harsh claims that the UFC set up the infamous bus attack involving Conor McGregor this spring. He’s also threatened to leave the UFC if they released his teammate Zubaira Tukhugov. The featherweight was pulled from his UFC Moncton fight against McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov for his part in the UFC 229 brawl.

Despite that discord, Coker made it clear 50 Cent didn’t make a serious offer to ‘The Eagle,’ at least not on Bellator’s behalf.

Fedor Emelianenko Breaks Down Plans To Prepare For Ryan Bader

Fedor Emelianenko is one fight away from being a champion again but must get past Ryan Bader first.

The post Fedor Emelianenko Breaks Down Plans To Prepare For Ryan Bader appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Fedor Emelianenko breaks down how he plans to prepare for his next fight under the Bellator banner when he meets light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader.

Process

The MMA Legend scored a first round TKO win over Chael Sonnen n the main event of Bellator 208 on Saturday night (October 13, 2018) at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York on the Paramount Network.

This served as a semifinal bout of the Bellator heavyweight tournament and now he will advance. He is set to meet Bader in the finals of the tournament in January 2019 where the winner of this fight will become the heavyweight champion.

Fedor Emelianenko Breaks Down

Emelianenko stated to the media after this bout that he had completely focused on this fight and didn’t watch Ryan Bader’s decision win over Matt Mitrione the night before at Bellator 207.

“We take into consideration the specialities and the features of all the opponents we meet,” Emelianenko told reporters, including MMAjunkie. “We’re preparing for this fight, and we’re taking into considerations the very strong sides of Chael.”

Preparation

When it comes to preparation, Fedor has the same gameplan in mind but knows they will have to focus on the ground game.

“The same will happen, actually, for the preparation for the fight for Bader. Me and my team will make the next conclusions. Certainly there will be a lot of attention given to all the work on the ground, on the canvas.”

Title

Despite what other people may think, Fedor brought up not thinking about winning the heavyweight title just yet and what it would mean for his legacy.

“First of all, I’m not the champion of Bellator,” Emelianenko said. “First of all, you have to fight and you have to earn it, and we’ll have to get together and discuss that if we win.”

Retirement?

He also addressed potentially walking away from the sport should he win the heavyweight title. However, at this time, that is not a thought that he has at this time.

“Everything depends on how I’m feeling, how my health is,” Emelianenko said. “I will be able to answer this question after the fight.”

Chael Sonnen Addresses Potential Retirement After Bellator 208 Loss

Sonnen said he also tried to have a rope-a-dope moment against Fedor.

The post Chael Sonnen Addresses Potential Retirement After Bellator 208 Loss appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Chael Sonnen addresses the speculation that he could be close to potentially making the call to retire from the sport of MMA. As seen in the main event of Bellator 208 on Saturday night (October 13, 2018) at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York on the Paramount Network, Fedor Emelianenko was able to score a first round TKO win over Sonnen.

Sonnen was able to pick up a decision win over former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson at Bellator 192 at The Forum in Inglewood, California in January to move forward in the tournament. However, his time in the tournament to crown a new heavyweight champion is over.

What Went Wrong

Following the fight, Sonnen spoke with the media about it and how he thought that the MMA Legend used up all of his energy. Thus, he believed that this would allow him a chance to make a comeback. Obviously, that didn’t happen.

“I thought there was opportunity there,” Sonnen told reporters, including MMAjunkie. “I was covering up, and I thought he was slowing down. Whether that’s accurate, I thought he was slowing down a bit, and the referee warned me. He said, ‘If you don’t move, I’m going to stop this fight.’”

Sonnen even admitted that he was trying to have a rope-a-dope moment in the fight that backfired.

“I didn’t think he would because they were going into my hands. I thought I was blocking them. I thought I was having a rope-a-dope moment. I thought I was luring him in. That was a bad strategy, it turns out. That was a bad plan.”

The former title contender praised Fedor for still having some serious power and being explosive despite being past his prime.

“Explosive – I would call him explosive. With his punches, there wasn’t a ton of setups; they just came, and they came hard. And even on the ground, I had some good positions on him, and he would just explode. It wasn’t necessarily technique-based, but it was impressive. He’s an impressive athlete. I don’t think I’ve ever been ground-and-pounded like that.”

What’s Next?

Sonnen also talked about what’s next for him after competing in MMA for more than 21 years. This led to him making it clear that he is looking forward to what’s next.

“I have some other goals I would like to achieve,” Sonnen said. “I really looked up to what Randy (Couture) was able to do to extend his career; I would like to extend mine. But it won’t be my choice. It was never my choice. Eventually coach Clayton (Hires) will come up and say, ‘We’re done.’ Then we’re done.”

Chael Sonnen Addresses

Part of this question was regarding his potential retirement as a pro-MMA fighter. This is not the cards for Sonnen right now and won’t be until his coaches make the call.

“But I must remind you I was just in the final four of a tournament with the baddest dudes in the world. It wasn’t like old Chael got cleaned up in a parking lot on a Saturday. We’re down to the final four in a weight class I’ve never been in.”

Scott Coker Responds To Claims Fedor vs. Sonnen Was Fixed

Scott Coker has addressed the claims that the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Chael Sonnen fight was fixed.

The post Scott Coker Responds To Claims Fedor vs. Sonnen Was Fixed appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Scott Coker responds to some fight fans believing that the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Chael Sonnen fight was fixed.

The Issue

It seems like over the past few years whenever there is a legend fight going on under the Bellator MMA banner, these claims come up. Well, the Bellator President is denying those claims as he said there was no foul play involved in the fight.

Headliner

As seen in the main event of Bellator 208 on Saturday night (October 13, 2018) at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York on the Paramount Network, Fedor was able to score a first round TKO win over Chael Sonnen.

Scott Coker Responds

As a result of this fight, he advanced to the final bout of the Bellator heavyweight tournament. Coker spoke with the media following this fight where he was asked about these claims and downplayed it right away.

“I mean, c’mon – that doesn’t even deserve a response to the people that are saying it,” Coker told reporters, including MMAjunkie. “Listen, Chael got clipped. He told me, he said, ‘Man, he hit me and he hit me really good.’ And he was done. That’s it. With Chael, the thing with Tito (Ortiz), ‘Oh, he let him go,’ or something. C’mon. Why would you do that? You’re a professional athlete. You’re a fighter. He wants to continue, he wants to go to the next round of the tournament. That’s just all rubbish.”

The Bottom Line

Coker also stated that he’s not sure why this is brought up. However, he does think that it might have to do with to the fighters involved and their personalities. Coker couldn’t make it any clearer, which is that this was a true fight and nothing manufactured.

“I don’t know (why people say that),” Coker said. “To me, they see Chael, he’s got this character and they just feel like with Chael he’s this character, so maybe that’s what they’re thinking (it’s fixed). If you had Fedor punching you and kicking you and kneeing you like he was doing today – that was real. That was not fake.”
