Put to his absolute limit once more tonight in the co-main event of UFC 299, former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier has snapped the winning run of French standout, Benoit Saint Denis — turning in a spectacular second round KO win over the Nimes native to retain his status amongst the lightweight elite.

Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion, had been sidelined since July of last year, suffering a hellacious second round high-kick KO loss to two-time foe, Justin Gaethje in the pair’s symbolic BMF championship fight in Salt Lake City.

And forced to rally tonight in Miami, Florida, Poirier walked through considerable adversity in the pair’s lightweight co-headliner — finding himself almost submitted on numerous occasions, as well as taking his fair share of punishment on the feet.

However, once more escaping a rear-naked choke attempt in the second, Poirier landed a bruising right uppercut in the pocket close to the fence, before cleaning Saint Denis and sending him to the canvas hard with a massive right hook counter.

Benoit Saint-Denis staph infection face UFC 299 fight thrown into jeopardy Dustin Poirier

UFC lightweight Benoit Saint-Denis appears to have a staph infection just days out from his UFC 299 co-main event fight with Dustin Poirier.

As part of his media duties, Saint-Denis has been subjected to numerous interviews and photoshoots which has meant his face has been front and centre for all to see. Why would that be a problem? Well, it appears the Frenchman has picked up a skin infection, on his face

Numerous fighters and fans would point out the possible infection via social media, but there has been no response from either Saint-Denis or his team to this point. There has also been no comment from the UFC, but it will likely get brought up at some point this week.

Benoit Saint-Denis’ condition called into question

While not the most serious case, the almost crater-like appearance does suggest that Saint-Denis has a staph infection, which is common for MMA fighters. Staph infections are caused by a bacteria called staphylococcus and is often picked up through close skin-on-skin contact and can flare up from something as small as a graze or ingrown hair. It will require at the very least antibiotics and often is nothing too serious, but more severe cases can result in hospitalisation and even death.

With small skin infections, fighters will sometimes try and enter a fight, particularly if it is one of the magnitude of Saint-Denis’ upcoming clash. Not only can this put Benoit Saint-Denis’ opponent, Dustin Poirier, at risk by giving it through direct contact, but infectious bacteria can also be left on the canvas leaving the rest of the night’s fighters the possibility of also picking it up.

It can also have an impact on an athlete’s performance and can leave fighters feeling weak, slow and with a depleted gas tank.

How do you think the possible staph infection will impact Benoit Saint-Denis come fight night?

Former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier has admitted nerves are setting to set him for him ahead of his return to the Octagon against the highly-touted, Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 this weekend – claiming a potential retirement for him come could in the not too distant future.

Poirier, a former interim lightweight titleholder and the current number three ranked divisional contender, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 291 back in July of last year, suffering a devastating loss to two-time foe, Justin Gaethje.

Competing for the symbolic BMF title, Poirier dropped a stunning second round high-kick KO loss to his fellow former interim champion – in what came as just his second knockout loss since his lightweight divisional move back in 2015.

Co-headlining the above-mentioned Nimes native, Saint-Denis in a five round clash this weekend in Miami, Florida, American Top Team staple, Poirier admitted that nerves are starting to settle in ahead of his ‘Sunshine State’ comeback – claiming he’s fighting to see if he still has “it”.

“[I’m fighting Benoit Saint-Denis] to test myself really – to see if I’ve still got it,” Dustin Poirier told TMZ Sports ahead of UFC 299. “This guy is young, hungry, on a streak, finished his last five opponents – that makes me nervous, so I want to toss myself in the fire.”

“That’s where I feel like I do my best work, and thoses are the kinds of fighters I want to fight – guys who are leaving it all out there, showing grit – they fight for finishes. That’s the kind of fight I want to be involved in. Every fight could be ‘it’ – every fight. Where I’m at, 35 years old, this is my thirtieth fight in the UFC – every fight could be it.”

Benoit Saint-Denis plots future fight with Charles Oliveira after UFC 299 I want to submit him

UFC lightweight Benoit Saint-Denis sets his sights on battling the division’s biggest game in their own arena.

In just six UFC fights, Saint-Denis now finds himself facing off with No.3 ranked Dustin Poirier and one win away from the very peak of the sport. What makes it even more impressive is Saint-Denis only started training in 2017, a year in which Poirier would defeat both Jim Miller and Anthony Pettis.

However, this gap in experience does not phase Saint-Denis in the slightest, already feels like he is able to beat the very best that 155lb has to offer. A former soldier in the French Special Forces, Saint-Denis has taken this elite mindset and applied it to MMA. The 27-year-old is committed to building a well-rounded arsenal which could match anything that an opponent has to offer.

Talking with Middleeasy, Saint-Denis would expose his highly competitive nature and passion for the sport. The Frenchman stated that he wants to beat the division’s very best using their own skillset.

“I try to train as hard and with as much intelligence as I can, having a great channel to become a better fighter in every art of mixed martial arts,” said Saint-Denis.

“I want to submit [Charles] Oliveira, I want to knock out Justin Gaethje, and I want to win a tactical fight against [Islam] Makhachev. I want to be in the best shape and as dangerous as possible in every aspect of the fight and to win those fights.”

Benoit Saint-Denis and Dustin Poirier are set to do battle in the co-main event slot of UFC 299 over five-rounds. If their past performances are anything to go off, the contest is set to be a tear-up which could see both men put in some difficult positions.

Dustin Poirier reveals reason he chose to fight at UFC 299 instead of UFC 300: ‘This just made more sense’

Dustin Poirier was hoping to be part of UFC 300 on April 13.

Instead, ‘The Diamond’ will step into the co-main event spotlight a month earlier when the promotion returns to Miami, Florida for UFC 299. Poirier is set to square off with rising lightweight contender Benoit Saint-Denis at the event, but many fight fans were still confused as to why the bout was booked for March 9 when Poirier had already expressed interest in being part of the promotion’s next big landmark event.

Appearing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Poirier cleared up the confusion by confirming that it was he, not the UFC, who insisted the bout go down at UFC 299.

“They offered me this fight for 300,” Poirier said. “I was talking with Hunter (Campbell). We were like, maybe the opening of the pay-per-view, maybe the second fight of the pay-per-view. And then 299 we started talking about, and to be the co-main event, that’s a much bigger slot. It’s close to my training camp, it’s close to home. From New Orleans, straight flight to Fort Lauderdale or to Miami, so it’s easy to do for people.

“I wanted to be part of 300, but this just made more sense I think,” Poirier continued. “Yeah, (it was my call). They did, they offered it” (h/t MMA News).

Dustin Poirier Fight the Biggest of Benoit Saint-Denis’ career

Last Week, Poirier gave everyone a scare when he claimed that the contest was no longer on the docket for 299. Four hours later, he retracted his statement feigning a miscommunication between him and his manager.

The fight will serve as a massive step up in competition for Saint-Denis who currently sits as the No. 12 ranked lightweight versus Poirier who occupies the No. 3 spot. That’s not to say the ‘God of War’ hasn’t earned his opportunity. Saint-Denis is riding a five-fight win streak inside the Octagon, including victories over Thiago Moisés and Matt Frevola in his last two outings.

Dustin Poirier, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back after suffering a second-round head kick KO against Justin Gaethje in their long-awaited rematch at UFC 291 in July.

MMA journalist Nina-Marie Daniele came rushing to the defense of UFC CEO Dana White amid all the controversy surrounding Dustin Poirier’s fight with Benoit Saint-Denis on March 9.

On Thursday, the MMA media went crazy as Poirier himself broke the news that his UFC 299 scrap with Saint-Denis was no longer on the docket. Roughly four hours later, ‘The Diamond’ backtracked by claiming that the fight was still on and his initial post was a “misunderstanding” between him and his manager.

During the four hours in between when all hell was breaking loose, Dana White went scorched earth on the MMA media via his Instagram stories. “You media guys are such pieces of sh*t,” Dana White posted on social media. “Writing whatever click bait u (sic) can to be first and not right. This is why NOBODY trusts or likes you. Guilherme Cruz.”

Cruz, an MMA journalist who appears on MMA Fighting’s Portuguese-language podcast Trocação Franca, was the recipient of another direct insult from White after the UFC CEO seemingly believed that Cruz was the one who broke the Poirier/Saint-Denis news. “Hey Guilherme Cruz go f*ck ur (sic) self scumbag,” White added along with a screenshot.

Nina-Marie Daniele Comes Rushing to the Defense of Dana White

Daniel, a fast-rising journalist known online as Nina Drama, has developed a close relationship with the UFC and many of its stars, including former middleweight titleholder Sean Strickland. So naturally, she came to the aid of White in a post on X.

“Oil him up Dana White! @danawhite responds to Guilherme Cruz via Instagram story regarding Dustin Poirier vs Benoit Saint-Denis fight potentially being cancelled #MakeMMAMediaGreatAgain.

The entire situation appears to be a grand misunderstanding. Cruz previously revealed that Benoit-Saint Denis and his team had no idea they were going to fight Dustin Poirier until Dana White made the official announcement online. That on top of his reporting of Poirier’s comments that the fight was no longer happening seemingly got back to White, making the UFC CEO think that Cruz was the one who had reported the cancelation to begin with.

It was yet another example of White flying off at the handle and belittling trusted members of the MMA media without attempting to understand the facts first. Specifically, that his own fighter is the one who kickstarted the media frenzy in hopes of scoring a better deal for himself while Cruz was simply reporting on it.
