UFC President Dana White does not want to see former two-weight champion BJ Penn compete anymore.

Penn, 40, is the unfortunate holder of a seven-fight losing skid, which happens to be the longest in UFC history. His most recent loss came after getting out-pointed by Clay Guida at UFC 237 last month. Since then, many in the mixed martial arts world have called for the Hawaiian to retire. White is the latest in wanting “The Prodigy” to call it a day:

“No, I want BJ to retire,” White said in a recent interview. “I love BJ Penn. BJ Penn is one of the legends of the sport.

[But] this is a young man’s game. I gave him a lot of opportunities because he’s BJ and because of the relationship that I’ve had with BJ, you know, his entire career and before that, but I can’t do that again.”

Considering Penn’s last win came against Matt Hughes in November 2010, it’s only natural that many have called for his retirement. Since then, he has suffered defeats to the likes of Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald, Frankie Edgar and more.

Most recently, he has suffered defeats to Guida, Ryan Hall and Dennis Siver. In the end, though, it’s up to Penn, who doesn’t seem to want to call time just yet. Do you think Penn will call it a day?

Frankie Edgar would probably like to see BJ Penn retire, but also respects his old rival’s wishes if he wants to continue competing.

Penn is currently on a seven-fight losing skid — the longest in UFC history — after most recently dropping a unanimous decision to Clay Guida earlier this month.

Edgar contributed to one of those losses as well as two other losses in championship bouts back in 2010. And having watched the rise of “The Prodigy” back in the day, the former lightweight champion finds it hard to see Penn losing fight after fight nowadays.

“I watched B.J. coming up and his highlights and it’s tough seeing him lose fight after fight,” Edgar told MMA Junkie. “But he’s the guy in there, not me. He knows what the deal is, he knows what he wants to accomplish, so I can’t knock anybody that wants to do what they want to do.”

Should Penn Retire?

Many have called for Penn to call it a day, while others say it’s his choice, adding that he at least isn’t losing in devastating fashion like other longtime veterans.

Edgar seems to be in between both sides of the argument.

“Do I wish he would retire and just enjoy life? Probably,” Edgar added. “It’s probably what’s best for his body, but I don’t really know what’s going on in his head. … I’m sure everybody has a little piece in it, but ultimately it’s up to him. No one is putting a gun to his head and making him fight. It’s all on him.”

While beating Penn now isn’t much of an accomplishment, “The Answer” boasts the distinction of beating the Hawaiian arguably in his prime twice.

Edgar became the lightweight champion after defeating Penn via unanimous decision at UFC 112, before outpointing him once again in a rematch at UFC 118.

The New Jersey native was a massive underdog heading into that first fight, and sees similarities ahead of UFC 240 when he challenges another Hawaiian in Max Holloway for the featherweight title.

Longtime UFC color commentator Joe Rogan has given his take on the state of the career of BJ Penn.

Despite not winning a fight in several years, the Las Vegas-based promotion recently booked him for another fight. In his latest outing, he suffered a decision loss to Clay Guida at the UFC 237 pay-per-view event earlier this month.

Penn decided to drop down to featherweight and suffered losses there as well. He was TKO’d by Frankie Edgar and Yair Rodriguez before losing a majority decision to Dennis Siver in June 2017. Before UFC 237, he suffered a submission loss to Ryan Hall at UFC 232.

Penn captured two titles in different weight divisions during the 2000s. But looking at his fight record, he has gone 1-9-1 since April 2010.

While doing a recent edition of his podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” with former UFC star-turned-comedian Brendan Schaub, Rogan gave his take. According to Rogan, Penn should’ve retired after he lost to Rodriguez.

“When Yair Rodriguez 360 roundhouse kicked him in the face, that should’ve been the end (H/T to MMANews). You saw that and compared to B.J. when B.J. beat Sean Sherk, you’re looking at a severely different fighter.”

Former UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn is still actively competing in the Octagon.

At 40-years-old, Penn continues to fight in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. He hasn’t won a fight since 2010, and is currently on a seven-fight losing streak, losing three by way of finish. In his last outing, Penn suffered a unanimous decision loss to Clay Guida at UFC 237 this past weekend.

After the loss, many people began to argue that Penn should hang up his gloves. There has been a lot of talk within the MMA community that Penn shouldn’t be fighting anymore in the first place. However, former UFC welterweight champ Matt Serra took to the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast to defend Penn (via MMA Fighting):

“I don’t know. It’s not like what’s happening to Rashad Evans or somebody like Chuck Liddell where you’re like, ‘Man, I don’t want to see him get hurt anymore,’” Serra said.

“I don’t know. I’ve known B.J. for so long, I love the dude, he’s a really good person. . . The guy’s a legend. He can do whatever he wants. I wish him best. I don’t want to, I’m not sitting here saying he should retire.

“It’s not like he is getting destroyed, and it looked like he was having a great time, as far as leading up to it. . . And he did look good in the beginning, you know!”

It remains to be seen whether or not Penn fights again. Aside from the controversy surrounding his physical ability to compete, many were surprised he was allowed to fight in Brazil last weekend due to his pending legal issues away from MMA.

Should Penn fight again, and suffer another loss, the Hawaiian might have to seriously consider retiring once and for all, as it would mean he’s on an eight-fight losing streak.
