Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) superstar Conor McGregor was impressed with WBC boxing champ Deontay Wilder’s big knockout of Dominic Breazeale on Saturday night.

McGregor, who hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, stays relevant in the combat sports community through social media.

The former double-champ was watching on Saturday night as Wilder knocked out challenger Breazeale inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with one punch at 2:17 of Round 1.

“That was some demolition job at the Barclays center tonight! Wow ? #Power”, McGregor wrote on Twitter.

McGregor praised Wilder again in a second tweet:

McGregor holds a professional boxing record of 0-1 thanks to his ill-advised attempt to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr, who many boxing experts consider the greatest of all-time.

While it’s quite clear “Notorious” admires Wilder’s one-punch knockout power, it’s unlikely McGregor sets foot in the boxing realm again.

The UFC was in Rochester, New York, for an extremely entertaining card last night, yet much of the combat sports world was focused on a different part of the state. WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder met Dominic Breazeale for the title from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

What resulted was sure to be one of the best boxing knockouts of the year when ‘The Bronze Bomber’ floored Breazeale with an absolutely vicious straight right in the first round.

It was a great win to be certain, yet most felt Wilder should have been facing rival Tyson Fury after their classic majority draw last year. While that fight has gone by the wayside for the time being, Fury still spoke up on Wilder’s win. He released a statement on his Instagram account congratulating Wilder before issuing him a warning (transcribed by MMA News):

“This is Tyson Fury, AKA ‘The Gypsy King.’ I just want to say, well done to Deontay Wilder in knocking out Dominic Breazeale. I got that prediction quite correct. Anybody who wants to go toe-to-toe with Deontay Wilder will have the same fate as Dominic Breazeale and the rest of [Wilder’s] 40 other victims. “

Called Them All Out

‘The Gypsy King’ didn’t stop there, however, calling out Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte. He closed by calling Wilder the ‘second baddest man on the planet’:

“Anthony Joshua, you’ll get it as well. Same thing will happen to you. Dillian Whyte [too]. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is the most fearsome, most destructive puncher in the heavyweight division. But it’s just a pity that he had to lose to ‘The Gypsy King.’ Anyone that stands in front of Deontay Wilder, he will knock ’em out. Deontay Wilder is the second baddest man on the planet behind ‘The Gypsy King,’ AKA Tyson Fury, the number one heavyweight in the world. Nobody can beat me. I can’t be touched.”

Listening to Fury talk about his potential opponents, it’s hard not to salivate over the match-ups the heavyweight division could put on right now. But with each top fighter having their own streaming deals, it seems like those fights are going to difficult – if not nearly impossible – to get booked anytime soon.

Let’s hope that isn’t the case.

In the meantime, Fury will take on German Tom Schwarz on June 15.

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder believes with all his heart that a title unification clash with Anthony Joshua will happen soon.

Wilder defended his title once again following a brutal first-round knockout of Dominic Breazeale at New York’s Barclays Center on Saturday night. His record now stands at an impressive 41-0-1 with 40 knockouts.

Soon after, boxing fans started clamoring even more for the American to face Joshua in what is already a highly-awaited encounter.

“AJ” is set to defend his heavyweight titles against Andy Ruiz Jr. on June 1 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. While Wilder is making no promises, he did hint he could be ringside for that event.

“I’ve got a lot of obligations to fulfil,” Wilder said (via Sky Sports). “But if that date is open for me you may see Deontay Wilder there.

“When it’s a good scrap, a good fight that people want to see, you might find me there. I can’t say right now, I can’t promise you that but when that time comes we’ll see what happens.”

Obligation To Unify The Belts

Of course, Joshua and Wilder have been slated to fight multiple times, most recently last summer. However, it never came to fruition due to breakdowns in negotiations.

Being in the same venue at the same time for the first time could be a start though, as Wilder feels it’s their obligation to give the fans what they want.

“It’s going to happen, it will happen,” he added. “I believe in all my heart it will happen. I don’t want this to be a Lennox [Lewis] and [Riddick] Bowe situation, I definitely don’t. The heavyweight division is so lit right now, it’s on fire right now. I think it is our obligation, our duty to give the fans what they want.

“I always say how we’ve been trying, but it’s going to come back around again and I think the next time it comes around the discussions, that deal we’ve been trying to make, something is going to get done.”

With Joshua holding the WBA, WBO and IBF titles, the winner of such a bout will become the first heavyweight champion to hold all four major belts.

Hopefully, the combat sports world gets to see it sooner rather than later.
