JunYong Park continued his upward momentum and scored another win in the Octagon, defeating Brad Tavares in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Royval vs. Taira.

Park and Tavares battled closely in the first round, with the former attempting to pressure and walk down his veteran opponent. Tavares, however, took the frame by landing solid shots, including a 1-2 that dropped Park.

The South Korean survived to the horn, however, and he and Tavares managed to both land hard on each other during the second frame. Park continued to land at will and did more damage in the final round.

One judge controversially scored the fight 29-28 for Tavares, but the other two awarded their 29-28 scores to Park for a split decision win.

UFC middleweight Dricus Du Plessis is set for another attempt at entering the Octagon for the first time in 2022 at UFC 276.

Per MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck, Du Plessis will meet veteran 185lber Brad Tavares inside Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on July 2. The pay-per-view is set to be the marquee event for International Fight Week.

Du Plessis (16-2) has had a torrid run of luck in recent weeks and months. After moving to 2-0 inside the Octagon with a vicious knockout of Trevin Giles last July, the South African was set for an intriguing bout with ranked middleweight Andre Muniz last December. With that bout cancelled, “Stillknocks” turned his attention to 2022.

The relative newcomer was booked against Chris Curtis for UFC 273 earlier this month. Once “The Action Man” was forced out, Du Plessis remained on the card thanks to Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez. When visa issues forced Nassourdine Imavov to withdraw, Du Plessis stepped up to face perennial contender Kelvin Gastelum, only for the #10-ranked contender to pull out through injury days later.

With Hernandez preparing for a new opponent, Du Plessis was left off the card and directed his anger towards Gastelum. The South African will now look to focus his energy on his fourth scheduled opponent of the year.

While the clash with Gastelum hasn’t been re-arranged, Du Plessis will still get the chance to break into the top 15 when he faces Tavares (19-6). The Hawaiian is a 20-fight UFC vet who has shared the cage with the likes of reigning champion Israel Adesanya, former titleholder Robert Whittaker, and Yoel Romero.

After returning from a layoff last year, Tavares rebounded from a two-fight skid with back-to-back victories over Antônio Carlos Júnior and Omari Akhmedov, securing him place at #12 on the middleweight ladder.

While he’ll be hoping to maintain the number next to his name, Du Plessis will be looking for a third dose of success on MMA’s biggest stage.

The current fights expected to take place at UFC 276 on July 2 are as follows:

Lauren Murphy vs. Miesha Tate (women’s flyweight)

Dricus Du Plessis vs. Brad Tavares (middleweight)

Jessica Eye vs. Casey O’Neill (women’s flyweight)

Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC 276, Dricus Du Plessis or Brad Tavares?

The surging Brendan Allen has a new opponent for his Octagon return in under two weeks.

As reported by MMA DNA on Tuesday, Brendan Allen will now be taking on Chris Curtis on December 4 instead of Roman Dolidze, who had agreed to replace the originally planned Brad Tavares. MMA News caught up with Allen last week to discuss the initial change in opponents.

“I found out late Monday night, late Monday night, and they told me it was injury,” Allen said of Tavares’ withdrawal. “So who knows? So yeah, they said he was out, Dolidze was in, so that’s what it ended up being, pretty short.”

Now, Dolidze is out, and Curtis is in. Curtis is coming off a big knockout victory over Phil Hawes just two weeks ago at UFC 268. He’s now facing another stuff opponent only month later.

As for Allen, not only does he have a new opponent, but he also has a new contract, one that he negotiated himself after parting ways with SuckerPunch Entertainment.

“I think I let go of [SuckerPunch] officially after the last fight,” Allen said. “We had the conversation before, that I didn’t feel like they were doing a lot for me, just giving them an opportunity to make it right, and just talk it over, you know? We had that talk. It was a good talk at that time. But to be honest, nothing changed. And no hard feelings. It is what it is. It’s just business. And I ended up with a new contract that I worked out myself, and so I let them go.”

Allen also revealed to MMA News that his new contract is for four fights. A bout against Tavares (#11) would have been an opportunity to surely enter the rankings, but with a win over Curtis, that would make six victories in his last seven fights, which would no doubt get him closer to having a number placed next to his name.

Allen (17-4) earned his initial UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender Series in 2019. Defeating the likes of Karl Roberson and the previously undefeated Punahele Soriano in his last two outings, his only loss in the UFC was to #7-ranked middleweight contender Sean Strickland last year.

34-year-old Chris Curtis is 1-0 in the UFC and 27-8 as a professional.

An intriguing middleweight encounter between Antonio Carlos Junior and Brad Tavares is reportedly being rebooked for early next year.

According to Raphael Marinho of Brazilian publication Combate, the pair will meet on January 23. That happens to be the date of the UFC 257 pay-per-view which is set to be headlined by a lightweight bout between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.

The pair were originally set to face each other at UFC Brasilia earlier this year only for Tavares to pull out due to injury. Tavares was replaced by Makhmud Muradov only for Carlos Junior to then suffer his own injury after tearing his ACL.

The Brazilian later revealed he was hoping to face Tavares by the end of the year.

“Probably end of the year, November or December,” Carlos Junior said. “I hope I can fight Brad Tavares; he’s a good fighter and is also in the rankings.”

They will now have to make do with January on what promises to be an explosive start to the year with McGregor’s return to action.

Carlos Junior last competed in September last year when he suffered a split decision loss to Uriah Hall. That put him on a two-fight losing streak after previously winning his last five fights in a row.

As for Tavares, he too, is on a two-fight losing streak following a unanimous decision defeat to Israel Adesanya in 2018 which was followed by a knockout loss to Edmen Shahbazyan in November last year.

Both fighters will naturally be desperate to return to the win column.
